These NYC Girls are Dominating Youth Chess

  • Chess has often been regarded as a "man's game" but a group of girls from Intermediate School 318 in Brooklyn, NY - which has the best scholastic chess program in the country at any grade level - are out to change that old idea. This past year, four of the girls qualified for the 2015 World Youth Championship in Greece, two were nationally ranked as top chess players in the country, and the team has been dominating the local tournaments they've participated in. In this VICE Sports exclusive, we meet some of the members of the team to follow their journey to the U.S. Girls National Chess Championship as they prove that girls can play chess - and win.

    These girls work very hard in school and in chess. Nancy, Mengnan, Vicki, Katrina and Samantha.
    The first 4 are invited to be part of Team USA and will represent USA in October in Greece; and they are well deserved.
    People who turn this into a race thing, please be mindful that these girls check the comments here daily and some were hurt by what you guys said. Really uncalled for!
    If you want to be good, work hard and you will be; it's never a race thing.

    I played Vicki two years ago in Chicago at the girls nationals. I ended up drawing but I should have won. I cried after the game because I was so annoyed at myself. The next year I went into high school and stopped playing chess because I didn't have a lot of free time and my high school didn't even have a chess club last year. I somewhat regret stopping but somewhat don't because you only have so much time in life. Great job to Vicki and the other girls though.

    great video. but they do exaggerate a bit. don't get ,etc wrong they are great players, but no where near the very best in the nation overall. there are at least 100 kids in Saint Louis alone who could easily beat them. like people rated well over 2200. I'm not sure as far as girls in chess goes. they are probably ranked very high in that regard. but best of luck to them. they obviously know what they're doing and are hard workers. and that is the best way to get better.

Like "girls are a force to be reckoned with" and pointing out the fact that certain players being "one of the best female chess players in the USA" is somehow an achievement for WOMEN is such a joke. Yes, in a field of two, they are second best. In a two horse race, 2nd is a nice way of saying worst. Live with it!! And I'm only 1/4 way through this "women are as good as men in chess" promotional video nonsense. Just highlighting all the moments that women appear to be winning. Shame on all the women who took part.

      Vice has a glut of social justice warrior cockroaches writing for it and this piece is obviously in response to the minor controversy of when Chess grandmaster Nigel Short was crtiticised for appearing to say that women are not as well suited to the game as men. So naturally, vice has to run out and find some girls that are good at chess so they can go: "see?!" but as I said in my original comment, Asians don't count.

    Today we are going to discuss the racist and sexist undertones of chess.
    Let us start with the queen. Why is this piece considered to be the only female on the board? Her mobility and versatility make her highly desirable to capture, but these qualities are in fact a metaphor for he femininity, and the male pieces don't like the way she is able to express herself so well on the board, thus, when they try to oppress that aspect of her by capturing her, they are literally raping her, which is worse than death. For centuries, this game has been teaching people that women belong in the kitchen, and that they deserve to be raped. It's fucking disgusting.

    • @wowwow8253
      @wowwow8253 9 лет назад

      +Wow Wow Next, we have the king. The king is the patriarch of the the board. THe objective of the game is to trap or capture him, obviously because he is male and 'men are so much better than women'. Yet the king is basically a neutered version of the queen, who is objectively more capable on all aspects, so why isn't the game focused on capturing her? I blame the patriarchy for this. His very title implies a great deal of heteronormativity. King and Queen, as if marriage should only ever occur between a man and a woman. Why couldn't we have another King instead of a queen or two queens? They should at least let players choose, as this is something that happened continually throughout history. Just look it up in any common textbook. But instead, racist misogynists insist on denying the historical record by misrepresenting the board, and, doing so, just by obeying the rules of the game, oppress entire demographics and minorities.
