Teach your kids to play early - very early. My 5 year old son played his first game 2 weeks ago and after 30 games and several hours of self initiated RUclips chess instruction, he already sees good moves I overlooked, uses chess notation and language (“daddy your pawn on h2 is hanging!”), and understands basic tactics and common checkmates. I think most kids his age can do the same, if they are introduced to the game and have fun playing it.
I agree. Kids are insanely fast learners. We often underestimate their intelligence. It’s so important to nurture these abilities very early on and chess is a great way to do so.
I agree I learned chess at 6 then stopped for like 10 yrs now I'm 15 and I know it's still early but I wish I didn't stop
@@juanis8219 kids are faster learners because their heads are usually empty and harbor some obsessions that help motivate them to focus on the game lol
ok that’s part of it yeah lol
I’m 13 and I’m just getting interested in it. Is it still possible to learn even though I’m a bit older?
Chess teaches kids how to act like a nice person when they win, and even more important, how to learn from their defeats - how to learn their current limitations, and how to progress. If a kid understand to apply this to other areas of life - its priceless :) This is one way of becoming smarter.
Well said, so does madden
@@markkindle8114 so does gta v
So Chess teaches kids good sportsmanship...okay.
@@tensaantaresYes, everytime you start the game you shake hands and do it after no matter how hard you stomped them
Well said Cody! :)
CHESS NETWORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jerry!!!
Hey jerry !!!!
Jerry, chess+English. U r the best!
yuh
I will never forget the way in which i lost when playing my first games, the person i lost to was very nice about it and it taught me good sportsmanship. Also controlling anger and remaining calm in a stressful situation.
It is logical that chess improves your intelligence in those areas that are used during chess, enabling you to solve other problems that require the same brain areas. Saying playing chess only makes you better at chess is like saying lifting weights will only make you stronger at lifting those same weights in the gym but not lifting up furniture. The strengthened cortex and increased neuronal connections will help you in other tasks as well. But you should be serious when playing chess. Playing with skilled opponents that force you to think. Blindly doing moves without even trying to think a step ahead won't do much good. You have to challenge your brain like you challenge your muscles with heavy weights.
Well said bro!! Loved it .. Really everyone have told me that chess makes u good at only chess but u r point was nice!!!!! Thanks.
I started to play because I wanted to increase my intelligence. A kind friend took me their wing and taught me and we have played for hours. At first I took a long time to make moves I felt so confused. I couldn't see possiblity, I didn't have a strategy. But then it started to click I started understand the pieces better, and how to analyze the board. Honestly when I first started I didn't even like it but my hope it would grow on me made me keep trying. I'm so glad I stuck to it. Now im enjoying it and that's increasing the more and more I practice. Chess is really good stuff☺️🧠💝
I'm so greatful for the brains ability to learn.
hi! im a beginner and i know a little bit but not much. Any advice? I’m not really that into chess but i want to keep trying since i feel like if i continue learning and understand whats going on during the game, i will start to like it. any advice is greatly appreciated!
@@v0id3333 You have to dedicate ae time and have a good reason to learn, I was playing and losing against a guy I liked alot and I was motivated to prove myself and my intelligence by beating him and it worked for me, I won 7 times in a row when initially I couldn't beat him in even one game. You have to find what motivates you. Now I just play because I actually love it. But also because I want to remain smart as I value intelligence highly. I'm just like a classic love story except it's usually the guy that gets motivated to prove himself to the girl.
@nCr=odds Very Good to hear about you.
At what age you started playing chess?
Me 2 years ago “chess is for nerds” me now “I wanna be a grandmaster
Absolutely relatable 🙌
Same 😂😂😂 now I play everyday
Facts
can we have an update? Do you still play chess, and what elo are you?
what eli are you now ?
So proud to share this with my 10 year old son. He's going to be a part of a chess start up that is happening soon at his school! Very exciting!
A chess startup ... jesus H Christ ....
Hope it all worked out
One of the best talks on Chess I have seen!
Chess has been shown to improve memory.
* forgets to put in slide of kids playing chess *
It isnt that he forgot to put it in it's just probably he chose the wrong file when he uploaded it
It's more funny the way Ken says it.
I'm pretty sure it was on purpose for the lolz.
@@Zero-ef4sc I don't think anyone can act that good and get no response from the audience.
@@Ken.- that's what you THINK. Not know.
The thing I like about chess is that no matter how good you are, there is still room improve. The chess engines prove that.
That was beautiful, and literally brought tears to my eyes
same, haha
school would've been so much cooler with chess
They would have probably forced everyone to play it which can easily take the fun out of it and especially make chess a bad experience.
@@Galaxia53 it was pretty fun even though it was forced
@@jovanshrestha4075 Did you enjoy it even at the times you didn't feel like playing for what ever reason? Like what if you didn't sleep well for example
@@Galaxia53I don't know. Free weekly coaching sessions sounds satisfactory for me.
Not to many TED Talks that make me cry!
I cried too
dont forget to analyse your games even if you've won. thats how you progress. get a feedback as much as possible. there is almost always a better move in chess.
Well said!!! Chess curriculums need to be in schools! Thankfully there are companies like The Knight School that are making this happen!
Most people never play chess long enough to understand how rewarding it is to develop a strategy and to see it work out. Chess is as competitive as any other sport out there. One of the things that I find most rewarding about the game is that in the end, there isn't any dispute about who wins or loses. You either achieve victory or suffer defeat.
Trav Hall I found the same to be true in pool.
John Lingel pool is great, but once you discover chess, you can’t be happy without it
Also, as it gets more rewarding to win, it gets tougher to handle a defeat
I just started watching this show about a orphan who learned to play chess, it’s called The Queens Gambit. The show is on Netflix. It made chess look so fun and interesting to me.
It just won the golden globe, amazing film
What a wonderful speach!
Thanks and chess helps many things we do not even list like social skills. EVERYONE share this video make it viral!
I thought most kids played chess & other board games when their younger.. My mom used to always teach my brothers & I about board games, chess being one of the games we played the most. Even people at my public school knew chess decently well, i didn't know people aren't even familiar with chess .
Say with me
Chess must be played everywhere
Schools, Offices, Home ... Everywhere
Would you guys mind it if I translate the speech into German and put it on my YT channel?
ChessCoach sharing is caring
do it
It's possible to add custom subtitles to this video too. But you need permission of course.
Not everyone likes it when you re-upload their videos. I wouldn't do it without permission
here is why it works-develop your pieces! great advice for on and off of the chessboard, literally and metaphorically:-)
Best ted talk so far
#Get Chess in Schools and in daily life !!!
Excellent ted talk!
Watching it in 2022 !
A lot of comments talk about kids and schools, but older beginners at chess can just study techniques to tap into the subconscious. The reason little kids pick up on things is because they're constantly in a theta state, deeper into subconscious (which controls 95% of what we do) than alpha (which occurs during meditation, prayer, rolling eyes up without hurting). If you habitually tell yourself (out loud or silently) to pick up on things in chess games that surprise you, tell yourself "more and more and more every game," especially if you imagine the feeling of pleasant surprise, you'll see results. Don't struggle to do it, just trust that it'll happen, that other aspects of you are making it happen behind the scenes without you trying. Repitition is a key component of subconscious program. Also, if you tell yourself as you're going to bed and as soon as you wake up. The state when not fully asleep, but starting to dream a little is very powerful, but anytime with eyes closed and/or rolled up is good.
Some people think it is, But you came here, and learned something about it. Good for you. Now play

How often should you play or practice to see benefits?
It doesn't work like that you have to make it a lifestyle

I love that ending analogy.

Excellent stuff thanks 😊
i wanted to finish this, but before I end it, I play a move already.
Age matters to some extent if your goal is to be a proffesional you must start in your early years at least till you are 15 as a GM Keith Arkell only started playing seariously at around 14-15 then beyond that is become less likely and eventually impossible but to simply enjoy the game then yes age isn't important
you are right but i guess u kinda miss the bigger picture which appear to be the great point of the talk. it's not about going pro, but getting the +'s of playing it trought life. just like he pointed out, it's not only played by smarts but to benefit from 'getting smarter'
@@guspartschmuth592 exactly. Many people have started late and gone big

Why is tedtalks so obsessed with low volume.
😂😂
Is that actually ChessNetwork?

Good ear
jesusthroughmary where when ?
Hi Cody. Have you come up with answers as to why it hasn't revolutionized learning yet? A $4 solution that has obvious benefits?! What are your thoughts on why it doesn't get adopted? What are the business and implementation challenges here? ... or is it the product?
It may be hard to attract people, because other activities have more impact in overall life. Since your time is limited, you need to choose wisely. For example, physical team sports greatly improve your body and arguably social life which is probably more attracting as common life-culture-society circles around that.
I also think, that it's some kind of political problem, since teaching kids chess at school was a system used by the soviets.
chess is the second most popular pastime in the world second only to soccer.
clash royale may beat that but as chess can be easily made and accessible. it has a huge plus against applications and smartphones in the world.
wish i had learnt sooner
Maurice Ashley is a "bad boy" to play chess against. Bad Boys Bad Boys! What´s you gonna do when they come for you!?? ;)

Chess is exciting to play. It is a pressure packed game.

Chess is an addiction. And once you r into it then it's difficult to come out of it. It develop urges. And if urges defeats your mind then it's difficult to focus on anything else. This thing is not a small thing. Lot of people are wasting thier time playing chess and not able to stop the urges of playing. If it's your profession u r earning money than it's all okay. Otherwise it can be dangerous. It develops memory concentration etc but it helps at an optimal level in the game only and not in the real world .
