I do not miss the aperture ring as much as I thought I would. This is just as good as any Fuji lens I’ve tried. I would like to get a body with IBIS as well, but for stills, it’s fantastic all on its own!
Fantastic!! One big important thing about Tamron, they use to have 6 years of warranty, yes six!!! Not sure if they still have the same. But the lenses are great!
I purchased this lens 2 weeks ago for a trip to st.thomas.. unfortunately some of my vacation was spent inside due to hurricane Fiona, but I did get a decent amount of time with it for video and photos. I was very happy with the af in video and stills ... tracking was always on point. I was honestly surprised how good this lens was over all. The IS paired with inbody on the xt4 left me with really nice tac sharp hand held night images. Image wise my only mehh feelings come from its natural color. Shooting jpg, I just felt color was very muted. Only real dislike is lack of aperture ring. Thank you to tamron for this little best of a lens.
hello Chris, thanks for the review. i still think the 16-80 is the better lens, especially for its colors and the focal range..the tamron colors look a few steps on the cool side.
Thanks for the review. I own the Fuji 16-80mm and it is a great lens. Mine is very sharp and contrasty and I'm not experiencing the issues that you had with it. Other than an extra f stop, I don't see any real advantage to the Tamron at that price. Now the bargains are with the Sigma Fuji mount lenses because they run about half the price of the Fuji. I picked up a Sigma 56mm 1.4 last week and it out performs the Fuji 56 1.2 I got rid of last year in almost all areas. Tamron could do better on that price if they want to be more competitive.
Good video, Chris. I was just out on a photo shoot with a Tamron rep. I had a compact camera and did not have a chance to try his lenses. Someday, could you explain in your videos what elements and groups mean in a lens? Thanks for your time and for sharing this informational video!
I picked up this lens almost 2 months ago. And it’s my favorite lens. I do miss having an aperture ring, but for everything this lens is, it’s worth the loss there for me.
I sold my Fuji 16-80 and 16 2.8 for this lens and I have no regrets! Great for photo and video. I did also pick up a cheap used 15-45mm for when I want something small and compact for fun.
Thanks for the review, I personally own the 16-80 f4 which I have found to be pretty darn good, even in low light. Love it’s size and the fact it has an aperture ring makes it for me a great travel lens. For more depth of field I use my 35 f2 prime.
Looking at this as a weather sealed alternative to my 18-55mm. All the other options either have a smaller aperture or no OIS. This ticks all the boxes for aperture, OIS, and weather sealing. The only thing holding me back is the size, but I think I'll eventually end up picking it up.
Before switching from Nikon FF to Fujifilm two years ago, my Nikon kit included the holy trinity in the Tamron V2 series (which this has the look of). I had compared them to the Nikon counterparts prior to purchase and in most cases, the Tamrons were either just as good, and in some cases even better than the top-of-the line Nikkors. To my eye at least, just my opinion. 30 years ago I started my photography journey by buying what I could afford, meaning cheap glass. I had some Sigmas, Tamrons and Tokinas. I couldn't get out of them fast enough, they were just never as good as Nikkors. So it took something special to change my mind all those years later, and I think Tamron knocked it out of the park. Haven't tried Tamron for Fujifilm yet, but I would have a go, no hesitation.
Great review, thank you very much! I was wondering about two things: 1) At 07:57 it may look like the focal point is just slightly further back. It sort of looks like the tip of the shell on the lego turtle is in focus and quite sharp? 2) At 08:48 perhaps the lens would perform better if it was in manual focus mode? Have you noticed any differences there with regards to parfocality?
I came to the same decision... its a great setup, I use them with either my xs10 or xt30..... its great, they weigh very little and gives me fantastic flexibility
Thank you. A direct comparison with the xf16-80 would have been interesting. I would go with the Fuji lense, it's smaller, better build quality, aperture ring on the lens, fixed F4 aperture and better focal range.
This was a great review as usual, but I have to point out that you mentioned an aperture ring as a plus for the 16-55. I know you didn't love it, but the 16-80 also has a marked ring. I'm a stills guy so the focus wobble isn't a problem for me.
Hmm… the 16-80 is my least used lens… but maybe that has a few reasons… 1. I shoot either super long, or super wide, and the 16-80 is not the best for either case… the SamYang 12 mm is fantastic, and so is their 135 mm f2… if you can afford a GFX, then the Laowa 17 mm f4 is very nice! The gf 32-64 is phenomenal! The XF 50-140 2.8 is also super nice, and quickly becoming a fixture on my x-t3, while the 100-400 is hanging off the x-h2s, with the awesome new autofocus!
@@AlexChristian Yeah. We all want a 13-400 f1.4 with OIS, 400 grams maximum, and for 300$. I’m frustrated too 😩 I don’t understand why Cartier-Bresson was not frustrated with a single camera/focal length. Damn it!
@@TungstenOvergaard 13-400 f1.4 isn't versatile enough. What if i wanna shoot wider? or really really tight? I think an 8-900mm f1.0 is better. Shouldn't be hard to design one under 300g.
Hey! I felt confident getting a Fuji when everyone around me was buying Canon and Nikon because of the videos you make! So thank you! Would you be able to make a comparison video with Tamron 17-70 and Fujinon 16-80/16-55?
There's something I don't like about Tamron lenses. I can't quite put my finger on it, but they just don't do it for me. Sigma, on the other hand, makes really great gear at similar prices. For the same price, I'd buy a used 16-55 instead of the Tamron.
Great video Adam. The light was perfect. How did you leave with that light show going on? As you were leaving behind you was a hollowed out tree, I was hollering turn around look. I would have gone crazy!!! Thanks again great video.
Nice video.. I bought this lens . very satisfied with my xt4 and even xh1 both IBIS bodies. And now it always glued to one my bodies always. But i wonder if its firmware can be updated.
I'm definitely getting this soon. I only have 18-55mm at the moment. And I don't even use the aperture ring. It's just annoying when my hand accidentally touch the ring and change the aperture and I don't even realize it.
Based on this review I ordered it. It just arrived and it is impressive. It balances well on the XH2S and zooms smoothly. I also returned my 16-80 and my 18-55. With the pancake 27 this makes a great travel/cruise ship kit. My 10-24 and 70-300 don’t get a lot of use. I do like the XF 23 and 33 too for low light moments. Thanks for all you do.
I've been wondering which lenses to get for my X-E3. I bought it used and it came with the 18-55mm. How much better is this in comparison? I was also considering the 27mm prime just for casual days. How do you like that one?
I have just seen this excellent and very practical video. Am an owner of the XT20, XT20 and XS10. Purchased an 18-135 Fuji as an all round lens. The 16-55 2.8 is really too limited in its focal range, for me, maybe not others? Also, it's too heavy and expensive for travel type needs. When this new Tamron lens in the Fuji mount is reviewed, no mention is even made of the 18-135 zoom. Will immediately be checking to see if it's still in production after putting up this post. The 18-60 has not been all that well reviewed, and not only because of the fixed f4. The new Tamron seems to have put a real cat among the pigeons so far as Fuji's mid range zooms are concerned. As an owner of the 18-135, tbh, have been sufficiently happy with it's performance not to immediately sell in favour of the Tamron. Also own a range of Fuji primes and the truly excellent Sigma 56 1.4. Tamron has really mounted a direct a value for money ass
Love the lens absolutely excellent for travel. I have noticed my X-T3 gets rather warm with image stabilization set on continuous with the Tam 17-70, I've never had that happen with my XF 70-300
Excellent no nonsense review. One reason I love the channel. I agree that the Fuji 16-80 is not a video lens. And I like the idea of the focus ring (on the Tamron) being closer than the zoom ring.
This is a very interesting lens. I’m considering a zoom for studio product photos… this or the xf 16-55mm f2.8 are on my list. Do you think this Tamron will resolve 40mp? I wonder if zooming in video very slowly would be okay despite the non-parfocal design? Very helpful video! Thanks!
it's a nice lens for the price, how ever i still love my 18-135 that lens is sharper then the Tamron 17-70 and you don't lose contrast at higher Aperture numbers like this lens and also i'm not getting any vignetting like that at all.. And my lens is around the same price so you might want to review that because it has more focal length available.. Cheers Donny
Hey Pal, i think you just missed focus on the 70mm macro shot. 8:04 - you can see that the shell of that ninja turtle is sharp (the brownish part behind the shoulder).
@@MrYuppiedu with my xh2s I get really bad micro jitters when shooting handheld video. the VC is the problem. Even with ibis off it still has the jitters. This lens is great on a gimbal or tripod. But terrible for handheld video.
Great lens. I had this on my A6700. Now I have it on my X-H2. Yes it has a few focus fails & doesn’t handle zooming with video but that’s because Fuji doesn’t have the Sony focusing system. Overall the results are fantastic. Not bothered about raperture rings, got used to that when I moved from film to digital. That shouldn’t hold you back.
Have one for Sony E, great lens! Also am actively switching to Fuji cuz tried X-T4 not so long ago and can confidently say that if it would have X-T3 screen, it would be my dream camera.
Thank you for this great review video. I hope you can answer this question for me. I have the XT-4 and interested in buying the Tamron 17-70. Do the IBIS and lens stabilization work together?
Chris, as always good info. Would you consider doing a “workflow” video. I’ve never had and often struggled with a coherent type of workflow to edit my photos. I’ve actually stopped editing my photos because I have no real cohesive workflow regimen. I’m frustrated. Thanks
I've heard few times that Fujinon's "focus breathing" is a conflict between the focus part and the object tracking part. Try to vary settings to less "instant" for tracking... If you still have such issues on any Fujinons.
I love that the new Fuji zoom is parfocal. It's going to be my new would-love-to-have lens for video. I'd love to see it at f2.8 instead of f4 but I'll take that and pair it with the new sensors to make up for some light loss.
@@sviraz the one released with the X-H2s a while ago. It has powerzoom too which makes it quite good for video work. Though it apparently still suffers from the exposure jumps on zoom.
@@DesertCookie if you are talking about 18-120 f4, it is not parfocal lens as AF motor still does micro adjustments while zooming in or out, which is visible. In the same way I could say my 50-140 is parfocal if i won't zoom in too quickly
@@sviraz Ah, what a shame. I just remember them presenting it as parfocal. I guess they stretched to definition by "making it parfocal through the AF-motor" which would be quite shady.
I've been wanting to hear this review. Thank you. Btw, at 2:18, I saw that there were some dust inside the lens. Did I see that correctly or is it just my eyes?
Great video! I have an x-t5, and i want to buy the 16-55 2.8.. But some people are saying im internet that they are having bad experiences with the 16-55 2.8 and the new sensor, because this lense cannot resolve well the 40 mpx? What is your experience? Do you see any difference in sharpness and overall image quality between 26 mpx and your X-T5 (40 mpx)? Thanks!
Light weight is very Important. If u always use F8 aperture, 16-80 is very good for you. Always shoot in low light 17-70 is suitable for you. If u already have 16-80, u can add sigma 30mm 1.4 for your low light shoot.
Time to pull out the 40MP Fujis in 2023 for comparisons going forward, IMO. My X-H2 body is really lonely for a sweet new zoom lens. Thanks for the video.
Hi Pal, the image Quality test for higher f numbers at 5:00 seems to be influenced by increasing ISO Noise. Sharpness can be better judged if the the image shows the same for every focal length. I. e. go near for wide angle and far for tele. It would be interesting how it compares to the Fuji 16-55/2.8. I think compared to the other Fuji lenses it’s a no brainer because of the constant 2.8 aperture of the Tamron.
Great video, and a very versatile lens. I'm torn though, as I've come into a little cash, and may trade my X-S10 in towards an XH-2 with the 16-80mm kit. The softness at smaller apertures may be a problem for landscapes. For portraits, and street, it will be great. Food for thought!
I’ve got the Tamron 18-300 for my X-T4 and my one criticism (versus my Fujinon lenses- the 16-80 and the 10-24WR) is that it misses focus sometimes. I generally shoot buildings or other static subjects so it’s nothing to do with face/eye detection or focus tracking. It doesn’t put me off using the 18-300, but I know to check every shot for focus straight after, and sometimes I need to re-take. Of course the 17-70 might be different.
I had, and sold, my Tamron 18-300 (I'm also using an X-T4) for the same reason. I was having a lot of trouble with the focus being unreliable. I have other Tamron lenses and love them, so I'm hopeful this was just a one off. It could have been the perfect lens!
Did you return the lens to Tamron under warranty stating your issues? I don't have or really want that lens, however it has been universally highly reviewed and I have not seen any real world users, as opposed to reviewers, do anything but praise the lens. Could you have received a poor unit?
@@robertcudlipp3426 That's a good question, but I'm not sure one way or the other. Most of the time it's fine - and when it does miss focus it's not so bad or so frequent that it seems like a technical fault. More like an annoying idiosyncrasy that I put down to the third party lens protocols not always playing nicely. But maybe I'm wrong. Too late to return it now - and sadly it doesn't have a USB-C port for firmware updates, unlike a handful of other Tamron zooms.
I don't get the issue with focus breathing... what problem is it inv real life? You don't zoom while filming with ALL those lenses anyway. Maybe I'm missing something. I'd be tempted to trade in my 16-80 because of tamrons 2.8 but this thing seems huge! I have a tiny x s10....
What an incredibly informative video! I just love the way you describe things. I've been using the 16-80 f/4 since it came out as I travel quite often but recently dropped it and it needs repairing. I'm seriously considering replacing it with this. Just need to decide if I want to trade the minor difference in focal length for a constant f/2.8.
Thanks Chris for the review. I got one on my XT2 and I noticed the battery drained much faster. Lens made in Vietnam and the VC worked well this time. 😂
Great content. Shame about it losing focus when zooming. If you could pick one lens for video with great video AF, with a standard zoom focal range, what would you pick?
I'd love to see a comparison with the 16-80mm, and the new 18-120mm F/4.. I own the 16-80 and don't have the problems you experienced; however, it is also not a perfect lens. the new 18-120 interests me, and is a similar price in the UK as the Tamron (the 16-80 is a little cheaper, although out of stock). I also wish all manufactures put T stops on lenses or at least made it easier to find them as not all F/2.8 or F/4 lenses are the same for light gathering especially now, a lot of photographers are hybrid photo/video shooters and being able to swap a T 2.8 lens for a different T2.8 lens makes video life a lot easier etc
Hm, comparing the minimal focus distance with the "Ninja Turtle", it seems that even the 70mm setting is sharp - at least the shoulders, chest and arms look quite sharp. Even the border of the turtle shell over the right shoulder looks crisp. Maybe the lens was slightly out of focus for the face?
Amazing review. Here is a hard question for you. I do roller derby photography, would you recommend it? I need a versatile lens with fast focus with an xt3. Thank you and cheers from México!
Hello Chris. Great video and review as always. I am considering this lens to my second hand X-T3 which I bought today. I have also one specific question regarding the X-T3. After buying this camera I checked the firmware version and I can see that it hasn't been updated since 3.10 or 3.20 version. Should I update firmware with each released version separately (one after another) or I should just install the latest update and all previously released will be instaled automatically? I will be grateful for help as I don't want to mess anything with the firmware. Thanks in advance
AFAIK Firmware upgrade replaces the firmware in it's entirety. The really should not point in upgrading though each version. Just upgrade to the latest version directly.
Thank you for this! I've been seriously eyeing it and if it ends up doing a good job of resolving the 40mp of the upcoming XH2, it'll be an instant buy.
Thank you for sharing how to turn on image stabilization. I have been trying to figure it out on the 18-300mm. I was going to sell as, as my still were too soft, but I looks like that may not be the case. Thank you!
Probably any lens nowadays is better than 18-55, even my 15-45 feels much better than my 18-55 in many ways. Some of the range in 18-55 not even feel sharp in 100%, not to say to beat the 16-80 or 17-70.
Hello Pal2tech, about the "zoom in zoom out issue and parafocal", do you know a Fuji Zoom wich does not have this issue ? Thanks a lot for your work / test and everything !!
Is it really that good lens considering its just 50% more price to pay compared to XF 16-80 f/4 especially when brought with camera. Few youTubers mentioned its soft at f/2.8 at 70mm. So that means it has to stopped down to f/3.2 or f/4. then what's the use of ?
Great video... just two question, is the fuji 16-55 2.8 parfocal or not? And does the fuji red badge lens have any focus breathing issues? Thank you so much for all the effort.
@@americosequeira8670 no, it's not - it's pseudo par-focal, where the focus difference is more exactly and smoothly compensated when zooming (probably because the zoom is by-wire so they always know how the zoom changed). A true par-focal lens doesn't change focus when zooming so there is nothing to compensate and the only par focal Fuji lenses are the MKX cinema lenses.
I see it very fit for event photography, especially for those who wanna use 1 lense only, if 17 is not too tight for indoors. With an X-T3 it might be a match made in heaven. Omar is the sexiest subject btw

Nice video.. I bought this lens . very satisfied with my xt4 and even xh1 both IBIS bodies. And now it always glued to one my bodies always. But i wonder if its firmware can be updated.
Really looking forward for this lens! Thanks for the time reviewing it!!!
@@disthymia6929 I have the XE-4 with the 27mm pancake and I really like it! Great small lens
Already I have tamron 18-300 ,Thank you Brother 💪💪💪
To finish, a direct valve for money assault on at least 2 of Fuji's zooms.
Love the lens absolutely excellent for travel. I have noticed my X-T3 gets rather warm with image stabilization set on continuous with the Tam 17-70, I've never had that happen with my XF 70-300
Now I'm not sure. This one, or the 16-80 f4? I used that last one on a friends X-T5, and I loved it (except for soft corners when approaching 80).
I am currently trying out this lense right now and I love it
Excellent no nonsense review.
Cheers
Donny
I just want to know how it performs on the 40 mp sensor vs the 16-55
Excellent review. I already have the 16-55 but as you said it is heavy. The Tamron looks like a great travel lens that is much cheaper.
Hey Pal, i think you just missed focus on the 70mm macro shot. 8:04 - you can see that the shell of that ninja turtle is sharp (the brownish part behind the shoulder).
Great review. Btw can you confirm if the inbuilt is works with fuji's sensor stabalization? It should shouldn't it?
It least with the X-H2s it does. So I think it also works with the X-T4
@@MrYuppiedu with my xh2s I get really bad micro jitters when shooting handheld video. the VC is the problem. Even with ibis off it still has the jitters. This lens is great on a gimbal or tripod. But terrible for handheld video.
Great video man! I was waiting for this lens review to Fujifilm users for a while. Love your videos. Keep up!
Great review! Very thorough in testing and explanation. Thank you!
Thanks
I bet G2 version of this lens would be perfect. They released G2 versions of 28-75 and 80-180 already.
Which fuji lens is parfocal? beside the sony mk one ?
You're coolest dude i've ever seen! BTW i'm learning English with you! ☺Thank you for your lessons! 🫶
мы все учим английский с ним)
I've been wanting to hear this review. Thank you. Btw, at 2:18, I saw that there were some dust inside the lens. Did I see that correctly or is it just my eyes?
I LOVE your videos! Thank you so much! The fuji in this video is it xt3 or xt5?
XT3. He mentions it in the video.
Informative review. I already have the fuji 18-135 and it renders very well and travels well. Don’t see that I would need this in my kit
That is the exact problem I have.
I was waiting on your review. Tamron in on my shoping list.
great video as always :) how does it compare to fuji 18-135mm? I do not mind video, only photo.
Cristal clear, as usual. Thanks, Chris, well done!
I’m surprised no one mentioned the green flashing partway through the vid.
I'm all for value for money. 17-70 f2.8 with IS. The name itself is a winner. I'm a Sony shooter, so I'm all about 3rd party value for money lenses.
i had this lens in june,, it is PAR convenient - versatile lens to go. 👌 nice rwview sir 👍🇵🇭
Thanks for the review! I am currently deciding between the Fuji 16-55 F2.8 and this Tamron and it's really hard :(
Which one did you choose?
Thanks for this review Chris!
That pic of Omar is great!!
@@alexandrerosenberg5277 Thanks a lot
Great video Chris! Thanks for sharing your insights
Thank you!
Will it resolve 40 mega pixels on the new Fuji X-h2?
i found this lens distortion got some serious issue.. supprised you didnt mention this.
Nice video. How is it when compared with Fuji 18-55mm? For sharpness, color, stabilization etc
Probably any lens nowadays is better than 18-55, even my 15-45 feels much better than my 18-55 in many ways. Some of the range in 18-55 not even feel sharp in 100%, not to say to beat the 16-80 or 17-70.
@@mahoumatic Thanks for the information
Hello Pal2tech, about the "zoom in zoom out issue and parafocal", do you know a Fuji Zoom wich does not have this issue ?
Thanks a lot for your work / test and everything !!
I just bought this lens! I love it!
Is it really that good lens considering its just 50% more price to pay compared to XF 16-80 f/4 especially when brought with camera. Few youTubers mentioned its soft at f/2.8 at 70mm. So that means it has to stopped down to f/3.2 or f/4. then what's the use of ?
Excellent video 📸!
Great video... just two question, is the fuji 16-55 2.8 parfocal or not? And does the fuji red badge lens have any focus breathing issues? Thank you so much for all the effort.
It is not. The only par focal lens is the new Fujifilm 18-120mm F4.
Thank you so much for such a detailed review of third party lens. 👍🏼👏
I'd like to know how good it's gonna be for photojournalism and how good it performs in a busy public events?
Does this lens take full advantage of 40MP of XH2?
i have this lens in E mount for my a6000, pretty good lens and value for money.
Great review! Now I want it more. Extra like for Omar cameo 😂
Sigma 18-50mm is coming so hold on Fuji shooters..
