I use a similar workflow with my Sampletrak, but instead of printing each track to audio as I go, I'll connect the Sampletrak to my interface using both audio and midi, and use the midi out from the interface to trigger the samples from the Sampletrak in Ableton as midi notes. That way I can write the track in Ableton and have the flexibility of getting everything exactly how I want, then commit to audio all at once when I'm finished. If you enjoy the dawless workflow, this kind of defeats the whole purpose, but I just like the character of older samplers, not necessarily making tracks on them. I feel like it's such an underrated way of working that breathes new life into samplers, especially ones with bad sequencers. But if you wanted to stay dawless, you can also just use midi to connect two samplers together, say for example a 303 to an MPC1000 and use the 1k to write the track triggering the sounds from the 303.
That's exactly my workflow! Sp404 Mk2 resampled into Ableton Live. As much as I absolutely love the 404 I find arranging or sequencing beats in the device to be extremely cumbersome. Hence you can really get "the best of two worlds" by using this approach: awesome sounds, FX and character from the 404 + all the flexibility and comfort of the DAW. Great video as usual man!
lets be real,MPC or Sp are cool to look at…but all u need is a DAW and some samples to make fire beats,I used MPC1000 with jjos system before,Im glad to swich to abelton live and ipad DAW like Gadget2 or Beatmaker3😊
I mean you can forego the laptop and just use a phone. 🤷🏾♂️ But, other than the esthetic appeal of these machines, you have the workflow, tools and character of them to contend with.
Nothing matches the SP-404 workflow for inspiration and speed, and it's nicer to avoid screens when jamming around with rough ideas. The SP-404 series provide a quick-and-dirty workflow that's hard to beat with anything else out there.
Set the MIDI up in Ableton so that You can control the 404mk2 with Ableton. Put 404mk2 in midi mode A (which each bank is a midi channel, example bank A is midi ch 1, j is midi ch 10) Make sure 404mk2's MIDI sync is set to "auto" Doing this allows you to bypass the 404's pattern sequencer and now Ableton is your sequencer. If you organize your sp's banks with sounds, Track 1 (in Ableton) could be set to midi ch 1 and so on. You can have like 10 tracks all controlling each of the 404mk2's banks simultaneously. I keep it simple and do 5 tracks. 4 midi tracks and 1 audio track set to resample what I've sequenced. Hope I explained that right lol
Definitely best way to use the sp404 mk2, comes int0 its own in logic, can quickly knock out tracks jamming and arranging. Still the best beat channel on YT!
Cool workflow man! hybrid workflows like this are dope and I've been using my MK2 with Ableton a lot recently. I love Ableton for the arrangement side of things so I sketch my ideas on the SP and then move to ableton to make the finished beat.
Oh man, I was doing this the hard way, when I got my SP404 I would noodle around on that, and then take my samples back into my DAW and chop them and refine them there. This looks much nicer, I have recorded to the DAW previously, but I didn't think about using USB for that! Thanks!
I actually have been under the suspicion for a long time that Madlib used a similar technique like this with his 303 and a multitrack recorder back in the day while maybe utilizing some of the sequencer functions for loops.
100%. It's not physically possible to do the whole arrangement on just the 303 for some of those songs. Plus you can bounce stems separately and mix them with the vox
Thanks for this video. Very inspiring. I’ve never been a big fan of the 404mkii sequencer and have worked a lot in Logic, so this seems like a great hybrid workflow. I’ll be experimenting with it for sure. I wouldn’t mind seeing some beat making videos from you using this setup.
Dude my sp is always connected to my computer as the audio interface. If I hear something I like , I use "skipback" because the SP always has a 40 buffer. I might have even sampled you !!!!!!
Peace peace never knew you had to change it to the usb mixout. But I would since it shows up as a vst in your daw wouldn’t it be easier if it had a multi track out function. I would love to tack out a whole song at once.
I have my turntable hooked up to the 404mk2 and run the outputs to my DAW (Ableton). Recording stuff from the 404 into my DAW works good as you showed. But recording back into the 404 is that also possible through usb-c (as I use my input channels for my turntable)??
I been trying to send just one track from the daw to the sp and add effects live while all other tracks play. So to have a live performance of the effects and match the whole beat. Would you know a way to do that is it possible?
For me not workin... I'm on m1 macbook, ableton daw. I set sp404 mkII as input and output driver but when I trigger some sample by SP pads the audio signal in Ableton is low, distorted and with some feedback....
i'm on windows with ableton and the inputs come up as Line (sp-404mk2) wave or DX and output appears as Speakers (sp-404mk2) wave or DX. can't seem to find a simple solution to this problem, can anyone help me out!? great video btw
I have the old sp404. Had it for about a year. Never used it in my workflow. But I would like to use it in my workflow. But I just want to use the affects it has in it. How would I go about doing it. And what cables what I would need
This is super nice. I’d like to see a more efficient way of this resampling method with a focus on applying the SP’s effects (signature sound comp/vinyl sim)while writing music in Live. That’s how the prior SP’s where used often I recal. To get that pumping grit on the master bus for instance by resampling. That would be even more easy now

Sp & Ableton's clip launcher go together like PB&J 🔥🔥

Great workflow. I was planning to do same thing with my sp 404 and FL studio
Did it work? I've done various trouble shooting but fl doesn't pick up audio or midi from the SP, it only sends audio through USB to my SP
@@DarylPartingtonare you using a mac or windows? If you use windows install fl studio asio and set fl studio asio to use sp404 as in and out

You the man Marlow!!👍👍👍
✌🏼
The new 4.04 update to the SP404mk2 makes this method somewhat cumbersome.
Hi I am so happy you're making this video, I have been waiting for something like this SP 404 with DAW integration. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!👍🏼
I actually have been under the suspicion for a long time that Madlib used a similar technique like this with his 303 and a multitrack recorder back in the day while maybe utilizing some of the sequencer functions for loops.
Make sense to do it like this if you're using the 303
100%. It's not physically possible to do the whole arrangement on just the 303 for some of those songs. Plus you can bounce stems separately and mix them with the vox

Simple clean workflow. Thanks Marlow 🤙🏻

Nice video and method Digs. in addition the Skip back feature goes well with this workflow #Peace

Sounds like you're doing it right 👍🏼
awesome video.
make one with the mpc this was 🔥
Nice technique!🙏🙏

What's the point of the SP404 here, you might as well just sample directly into Logic and use something like an Akai MPD218 for the pads.
I been trying to send just one track from the daw to the sp and add effects live while all other tracks play. So to have a live performance of the effects and match the whole beat. Would you know a way to do that is it possible?
So you don't need an audio interface with the sp404 mk2?
No it can work as an audio interface, I use it all the time.
I need an mk2 asap
💥💥When you sample from the audiotecnica turntable to the 404 you put the turntable in "phono" or in "line" option??? Which is the best option??
I used line before but now im using phono connection with my amplifier ruclips.net/video/2DvMLU2j3tY/видео.htmlsi=g0ynUh4d53kAUhdc
Noob question- but what DAW are you using? I have struggled with snapping a sample to the bar using the SP404MK2 as a VST plugin on Ableton
Using logic. I normally would just record samples freely to Logic the drag them to the grid.
@@mpchead hadn't occurred to me to do that. You think I can record the samples and then drag them into position/ warp them?
Yeah I don't see why not.
For me not workin... I'm on m1 macbook, ableton daw. I set sp404 mkII as input and output driver but when I trigger some sample by SP pads the audio signal in Ableton is low, distorted and with some feedback....
Imo this method works better in Ableton but that’s because I feel Ableton works better with audio.
Yeah Ableton is definitely a great choice for this

Would this work in the same way with the akai mpc live 2?
I never tried it this way, but I don't think it'll work the same.
If it has a sound card then it’ll work
Are there other DAWs out there that will work with the Sp?
All daws work this way
@@mpchead free ones too?
