  • Arguably the greatest living keeper of the bebop flame, alto saxophonist Richie Cole returns to Madison in this season kickoff program for Madison Music Collective's "Jazz on a Sunday" series hosted by Chris Wagoner and Mary Gaines of Mad Toast Live. Richie will be joined by a rhythm section led by our celebrated local pianist Dave Stoler.

I've followed Richie from 1969 with Buddy Rich to the present. His is one of the most eventful, dramatic stories in jazz. From the start he's been a throwback to the gunslingers of the Old Wild West, or more accurately, the rivals of Bird on 52nd Street. Were he born 15 years earlier, he'd have had the crowds and acolades he probably deserves. He's recorded duels with Art Pepper, Phil Woods, Sonny Stitt--and has witnessed his share of the life, its disappointments, tragedies, and compensating moments of success on the bandstand. - For a while his pianist was one of the most physical, prodigious, polytechnical players the music has ever seen-Bobby Enriquez. This Madison is essentially a "pick-up" band. (I have no idea why any respectable keyboardist would still favor the Fender Rhodes sound (digitized!) other than sheer necessity.) Today Richie keeps a low profile, accepting occasional engagments in NYC, Madison, etc. After a fairly innocuous program, it's good to hear Richie--known for his lightning-fast, killer technique--air it out on a "Cherokee" that breaks the speed limit (even if it handcuffs the keyboardist). Richard's story about his parents and upbringing explains a lot about his curious repertory choices and quotes (though he'd never have gotten away with those corny ones with Stitt).

"Back in the day when Stan Getz ..." ..come on...Mr. Cole's Alto sounds like a circular saw going through a pine-nut. His technique is so bad he is a living example of what not to do. Why are people like this so confident and so self possessed?. The quiet ones are usually the best. Enough of American big mouths.
