  • This video contains spoilers.
I wanted to do something different with this video, so I decided that there should be no narration. Instead, I had writer/director Céline Sciamma speak about the film herself.
"On an isolated island in Brittany at the end of the eighteenth century, a female painter is obliged to paint a wedding portrait of a young woman."
None of the music or footage used in this video belongs to me.

@zimThuet I have not gotten the tattoo yet. I usually think on such things for years before actually inking it on my body lol. I'm not a tattoo person. The timelessness of the saying appeals to me. Also it is a great scene in the movie. I would want to preserve the authenticity of the source of the quote. Therefore keep it in French. I have 3 tattoos and they are all phrases in their native tongue of Latin, Greek, and Cambodian. I also like to get the tattoo in a significant location. When the time is right and I am in Paris (I am from North America) I think i will get it at a tattoo parlor in the city. Thank you very much for your very thorough response; It is very appreciated. And I will definitely confirm multiple times before making it permanent.

The details in this movie is just... mind blowing. I find new ones every time I watch it. For example I just realized that Marianne is dressed in the same colors as her painting of Orpheus and Eurydice. Clever. And maybe it's just me that missed this the first time around, but when they have that cute convo in bed together at the end - a tear carefully falls down Heloise face/nose. Marianne is also crying. So well done and subtle.

@@annabella7285 Did you see it again and notice it? If not look for it the 4th time ;) Another fun fact that I have never seen anyone ask Celine and might go unnoticed, is when Heloise ask, "has it ever happened to you.." First looking up at Sophie. Marianne says yes, as implying to the abortion. THEN she asks about if love has happened to her... its easy to miss that Marianne is actually saying that she has had an abortion before. Gives you more info about her past, which is scarce in the overall story line. Watch that part again and let me know if you take it the same way. :) You can see it here: ruclips.net/video/zcWUw4vaAPU/видео.html

@@annabella7285 Good question. I have no idea! Well, I do know about online "movie theaters" where you can rent it but they are strictly controlled by geography + I know they have blockages, so you can't record it. I've wondered the same. I am glad the uploading exists, so that people can get curious and then go watch it, but at the same time I wish I hadn't seen any of them before the movie itself. I have to admit that I knew some spoilers beforehand. :/ You are right it is certainly a "big screen movie". I'm lucky I got a home theater with a projection screen so when it does come out for streaming I will pick the movie apart, with some red wine at hand of course ;) Just a bliss! I'm also a photographer and you can imagine how this movie is a learning session in lighting and composition. Sometimes I had to bring myself back into the story line because I kept being distracted by the technical craft of it all. I would have loved to work with the lighting director on this.

This film has stuck with me for weeks. No film has ever done that. When asked "what's your favorite movie?" my "go-to" reply was always Grease because I had a massive girl crush on ONJ but in over 40 yrs I can say this was more than just a love story. It was so well written and acted that I didn't even notice that there was no music, no scores to direct your emotions or attention. no soundtrack. Just waves or crackling of wood burning in the fireplace. Just 2 songs and both very intense and powerful songs which created intense moments. (That's why I get a little flustered by seeing homemade youtube videos of the film edited and put to music that has no bearing on the film) A freakin' stellar masterpiece in cinema. And stellar acting.

I stumbled blindly into this film only recently on Hulu and have been looking for outlets to deal with what this film did to me ever since. The most beautiful film experience, and I had no idea, no trailer, no info….So many things and details about what Celine and these wonderful women created is so special. I felt this. The steps, the smiles, the looks, the words and even the silence. The moment when Noemie places her head so softly on Adele’s shoulder melted me❤️. That gesture was so beautiful. Adele’s “‘do all lovers feel theyre inventing something” oh wow. In my 50’s and I have never experienced anything like this. Beautiful film and I continue to re watch and obsessively tell about it. “It is not lost, it is something you win for life”. Thank you Celine and all the cast, 👏👏💐💐❤️❤️

Celine left the interpretation of the script to Adele, who compared it to a skier racing down the mountain, knowing where the curves are, plotting the run in your mind. There were two requirements from Celine; that she would close her eyes at some point and end on an inhalation. To fully understand the brilliance of Celine and the absolute mastery Adele has of her craft, here is Celine’s script for the final shot: “There is everything. There is surprise, thrill, a beating heart, anticipation, melancholy, focus, the blush in her cheeks, remembrance, sadness, and her deepening breath. All the behaviors of a woman you used to know well, whom you loved looking at, whom you loved period. But there are also things you never noticed before, maybe because they are novelties like that wrinkle in the corner of her eye, maybe because they are things you could not see before and had to discover for yourself.”
