I had NO idea that there was a company making rechargeable electric outboards - that is really wonderful. It would be even better if you could recharge them via solar power. Thanks for all of the tips on how to take care of the engine as well - it's the little things that we do that ensure that any part of the boat will last as long as possible.

It's amazing how the technology of boat engines has improved over the years.

Those batteries are over $8000 a pack and you will need at least two of them. Three or four will be needed to run the engine as an 80hp. It seems that the engine can be run in multiple "modes". I am thinking that they will be best used as an alternate power source on sail boats that are also set up with solar recharging. Then again, a nice inboard diesel will last you DECADES and won't set you back 24k-40k dollars. Those battery packs chemistry will not last longer than 7-10 years even for the BEST batteries. They really need to bring those battery prices down.

There are no bad outboards anymore. Barring a lemon, they're all good. The most trouble free outboard is determined by whose caring for it.
I've been in outboard all my middle-aged years, down to the needle bearings. I have my favorites as any enthusiast does. But I trust any of them that are used and maintained responsibly. And absolutely, stale and/or contaminated fuel kills more outboards than anything else.

Good point about the importance of avoiding bad fuel.

When buying a boat, We gave the engine as much consideration as the boat itself, maybe more, after all, it's the only thing bringing you home! Brand was not an issue for us, it has to be Yamaha. Just the size, and when we bought ours, two or four stroke . When all was considered, transom weight, holeshot power, reliability( not really an issue either way ) maintenance, fuel economy and price of purchase, We went with the two stroke 200hp Yamaha V6. What a great engine. We have 0 regrets.

Look, battery electric motors are a joke. Think water and electric, add in salt water to the mix.. Also look into how these batteries are made it is not helping the environment in fact it is using cheap labor along with environment nightmares, think what to do with all these batteries when they need to be changed not going to the local dump now is it so where? Additionally, resale is out just like used electric cars it is junk and cost too much to fix and replace batteries...
