Lex do you think the talk about building an even bigger collider than the current hadron collider is worth looking at? As you already know if they discover something like the supersymmetric particles, that's going to potentially lead to new technology having a direct impact on everyone. Paired with AI and quantum computing we might be in for a wild ride worth talking about. There is also the economic and political aspect and the Ukraine war. Will people want to see the spending on such a project. All in all madness that might be worth making a podcast about.

''The first year in law school I decided I didn’t want to be in law school and ended up in the bottom two-thirds of my class and then decided I wanted to stay and went back to law school and in fact ended up in the top half of my class,’' he went on.
But last week Biden released his law school records showing he had graduated 76th in a law school class of 85. The law school transcript also showed he made little progress in class standing through the three-year course, ranking 80 out of 100 in the first semester of the first year, and 79th out of 87 the second semester of his second year.”

2:24 Saagar, while talking about FDR and JFK, seems to be saying that the vigor and charisma of a president is what makes them great as opposed to the actual accomplishments they have achieved. I strongly disagree with him if that's the case he's making. You can still be a good president without being seen as charismatic. Abraham Lincoln was almost vilified as president during the Civil War and faced intense opposition over willingness to abolish slavery and restore the Union. Literally no one said Lincoln would be seen as a great president. History now ranks him as one of, if not, the greatest president. Same thing with Harry Truman. Truman was seen by some as weak and ineffective. He left office with his approval rating in 20s. Most historians now rank him among one of our best leaders. To say a president has to have vigor and charisma to be considered great is laughable. To me, charisma is an accessory, but not a necessity.

I think there is a common factor regarding how one becomes a "bad" President in the modern era. The perception of foreign weakness.
Yes, domestic policy failures or successes have an impact, but I think there is a general understanding that any given President doesn't have the same level of control over domestic policy as they do over foreign policy.
Domestic policy issues can certainly cause political problems, but foreign policy issues are harder to duck responsibility for.
Most Americans want their country to be respected and thought to be strong by the rest of the world. They generally have little tolerance for a President who does not make that happen.

While I am no Biden sycophant, I am an historian and believe anybody making the claim that a sitting president will be seen as the worst or among the worst presidents in modern history, lacks historical perspective. And critically, what is missing from this entire discussion are the circumstances within which the “Biden inflation” occurred. Let’s recap just what led up to the Biden election and presidency-
1- In the two years prior to the pandemic, specifically in 2018 and 2019, there were reports of strains and reorganization within the U.S. intelligence community. One significant move involved the disbanding of the National Security Council's (NSC) global health security office in 2018. This office was responsible for coordinating responses to global pandemics and health threats. At the time, the office was either disbanded or its functions were absorbed by other parts of the NSC. This decision was widely criticized after the pandemic, with many experts arguing that it hindered the U.S. government's ability to quickly respond to COVID-19.
2- In the early days of the pandemic, particularly in January and February 2020, Donald Trump repeatedly downplayed the severity of the situation. For example:
January 22, 2020: When asked about the coronavirus during an interview, Trump famously said, "We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. It’s going to be just fine."
February 27, 2020: Trump stated, “It’s going to disappear. One day, it’s like a miracle, it will disappear.”
March 2020: Trump also claimed that the virus would be "gone by Easter" (April 2020), and later expressed optimism about unproven treatments, such as hydroxychloroquine.
Trump's public messaging during the early months of the pandemic was widely criticized for being overly optimistic and for underestimating the severity of the crisis. This contrasted with later developments, where the virus spread rapidly, contributed to a significant amount of confusion and frustration.
3- In the first six months of the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. experienced a sharp spike in unemployment due to widespread lockdowns and business closures. The highest unemployment rate reached was 14.8% in April 2020, which was the highest level since the Great Depression. The U.S. economy lost about 20.5 million jobs that month.
In response to Great Depression levels of unemployment during Trump’s last year, Congress injected trillions of dollars into the economy that people couldn’t spend. A first year economics student could tell you THAT was what caused the inflation that followed.
Finally, you can’t compare Biden’s legislative accomplishments with razor thin majorities in Congress to those of FDR who had historically huge majorities. The fact he got anything through that polarized, evenly divided congress is miraculous. There is really no precedent for it in US history.
For this, Biden gets the opprobrium from your guest of being among the worst presidents in recent history. The fact is, he was dealt the political division and the mess created by probably the worst president in US history- the man who history shows set the stage for the pandemic, bungled its early stages when it might have been snuffed out, and then got the US into its worst economic crisis since the 1930s, and who the people have now somewhat stunningly re-elected.

    • @PierreHolmes
      @PierreHolmes 8 дней назад

I appreciate your take as a historian and want to thank you for giving the necessary context needed to understand the circumstances surrounding Biden's presidency. You give a pretty objective analysis of the situation. Also, I'm pleased that you highlighted the fact that Biden got significant legislation passed despite the incredibly slim majorities in Congress. Let that sink in. Biden arguably has more domestic policy accomplishments than any president since Lyndon Johnson. Recent presidents like Barack Obama and Bill Clinton came into office with bigger majorities and with a less polarized political climate than today. Yet, both were, at times, unable to enact most of their agenda due to political inexperience or a misunderstanding of Washington politics.
Like you said, presidents like FDR and LBJ had overwhelming majorities and had no almost problem enacting their New Deal and Great Society programs. Not to mention both had a liberal-leaning Supreme Court during their terms whereas Biden had to deal with a 6-3 conservative court. In my opinion, Biden has been a better president than many people give him credit for. Truly underrated. His best skill as president is probably is relations with Congress. History will be kinder to him than people are right now.

The economy is a slow process and prior presidents might have as strong influence as the current president. At the moment US economy is considerably larger than the economy of China, after being almost at the same size a few years ago. This discussion is so sad.
Saagar reads liberal authors’ books on past presidencies, like Jean Edward Smith & Robert Caro, and praises the worst presidents, like the Polio Prince. He has been brainwashed.
Herbert Hoover made his fortune as a mining engineer, not a banker. He was a genius at managing huge mining concerns around the world. He was also a progressive, like the terrible Teddy Roosevelt. Hoover took the ‘29 Crash & resulting recession and, along with horrible monetary policy from The Fed, turned a fairly manageable recession into a depression by 1932.
But it was the Raw Deal policies of the Polio Prince that made the depression Grrrrrrreat! 1933-37 were terrible years for America. While the most of the world recovered economically, FDR’s Keynesian super-spending pushed us further into the Great Depression. The Polio Prince also slashed military spending to the bone so that he could pay grown men to plant trees! The sad result being the U.S. military was ranked 16th in the world, just behind Portugal, in 1940; which gave the Japanese the belief they could hit us hard enough at Pearl Harbor, Wake, Guam, and The Philippines that we would sue for peace and stay out of their attempt to take over the whole of the Far East, including Australia.
Democrats got us into major wars in the 20th Century because they always cut defense spending for social programs.

It was Obama's Third Term. It was obvious from day one. So, if you're going to say " he's the worst president of all time " let's get it straightened out. Obama. Then Carter. This guy keeps saying he is a history nerd. What got America out of the Great Depression, is nothing but WW2. " I know what it takes to be President" lmao.

W isn’t the worst. He wasn’t wrong for invading, it was what came after.

No he was wrong for invading Iraq because it destablized the region. Saddam was a bad man by all metrics as well as other like Kadafi, however those bad men kept worse demons in check and we got rid of them.

I know this content is like music to a lot of Dumpers especially when it is coming from a PoCs mouth, but here's the thing, Dump did exactly the same with golf. He's as smart as the deer that keeps looking at you while in the middle of the road when you're driving towards it at 40 mph.
Don't be tribalistic. Just use common sense and realize that it depends on us individuals not just to vote but to set the mandate for politicians. Be active throughout 4 years and not just once every 4 years.

I mean he is a c student but that is all we wanted remember? Remember how bad things were in 2020? Things are much better now in 2024 . The worst president in modern history and maybe in our entire history is clearly Donald Trump.

Really? Trump had the vaccines rolling out. No president would have been able to stop a novel virus. If you want someone to blame, blame the virus’s creator: Anthony Fauci. Sounds like you have TDS.
