2:24 Saagar, while talking about FDR and JFK, seems to be saying that the vigor and charisma of a president is what makes them great as opposed to the actual accomplishments they have achieved. I strongly disagree with him if that's the case he's making. You can still be a good president without being seen as charismatic. Abraham Lincoln was almost vilified as president during the Civil War and faced intense opposition over willingness to abolish slavery and restore the Union. Literally no one said Lincoln would be seen as a great president. History now ranks him as one of, if not, the greatest president. Same thing with Harry Truman. Truman was seen by some as weak and ineffective. He left office with his approval rating in 20s. Most historians now rank him among one of our best leaders. To say a president has to have vigor and charisma to be considered great is laughable. To me, charisma is an accessory, but not a necessity.
@@arodgefan589 Except when it comes to immigration and civil rights. Watch any of his views about using military to quell the BLM riots or closing America's borders to ALL immigrants (not just illegals).
So when it comes to Trump, you argue that he should not be judged by his character, but by his accomplishments. But when it comes to Biden, you argue that he should be judged by his character, and not by his accomplishments. And that's why he's the worst president.
"Creepy Joe" should DEFINITELY be judged by his accomplishments... of which there are exactly ZERO... in fact, his "accomplishments" are in the NEGATIVE column! End of assessment... except for that part about how he should be in PRISON for his traitorous involvement in Barisma while he was Vice President!!! The "two-tier" system of "injustice" incarnate!
Judgement is a kind word to describe GWB’s decision to invade Iraq: it was pathological indifference for human life . Million Iraqis died and thousands of our troops
Saagar: I would like to think of Joe Biden as an individual as a president Also Saagar: Sam Harris is not able to look past Trump as an individual. Also Saagar: Joe Biden's narcissism is a big problem. 😂
Fundamentally Biden and Trump are equally awful people. Trump isn't palitable to the establishment because he also thinks he actually gets to make decisions. Biden's just happy to be along for the grift.
Much of a president ‘s actions do not manifest until much later. A critical exception is the hope and optimism, or lack thereof, that a president can inspire in the people.
I think there is a common factor regarding how one becomes a "bad" President in the modern era. The perception of foreign weakness. Yes, domestic policy failures or successes have an impact, but I think there is a general understanding that any given President doesn't have the same level of control over domestic policy as they do over foreign policy. Domestic policy issues can certainly cause political problems, but foreign policy issues are harder to duck responsibility for. Most Americans want their country to be respected and thought to be strong by the rest of the world. They generally have little tolerance for a President who does not make that happen.
Very smart man, but it’s hard to listen to him have a “conversation” Lex is trying to get to questions and he can only get partially there before a five minute historical lecture ensues
I mean, have you never listened to a longform podcast? That’s the point. This isn’t 60 Minutes or Fox News. Podcast audiences want a long answer to a question. It allows the guest to give in-depth answers. This is what a discussion sounds like. What a stupid comment.
The U.S. is currently outperforming every other G7 country after the world wide crisis. I guess that doesn’t matter though, man, no forest here huh? Just trees.
@@theShartLord Biden's economic agenda and legislative decisions put us in that position. I'm not sure how that fact is congruent with the statement that he's the 'worst President in modern history'. Saagar's argument seems to boil down to "Trump got elected again, so Biden sucks". Which is crazy.
I would just want to point out the economy numbers are high.. (Black friday numbers broke records). Russia seems to be losing steam in the middle east from assad going down. Yes biden presidency wasn't perfect, but it sure as hell beat when my grandma died from covid, and I couldn't get work because all bars were closed in 2020.
If you want someone to blame for your grandmother dying, blame Anthony Fauci and Xi Jinping. The only way you’re going to stop a novel pandemic is through vaccination, and herd immunity
While I am no Biden sycophant, I am an historian and believe anybody making the claim that a sitting president will be seen as the worst or among the worst presidents in modern history, lacks historical perspective. And critically, what is missing from this entire discussion are the circumstances within which the “Biden inflation” occurred. Let’s recap just what led up to the Biden election and presidency- 1- In the two years prior to the pandemic, specifically in 2018 and 2019, there were reports of strains and reorganization within the U.S. intelligence community. One significant move involved the disbanding of the National Security Council's (NSC) global health security office in 2018. This office was responsible for coordinating responses to global pandemics and health threats. At the time, the office was either disbanded or its functions were absorbed by other parts of the NSC. This decision was widely criticized after the pandemic, with many experts arguing that it hindered the U.S. government's ability to quickly respond to COVID-19. 2- In the early days of the pandemic, particularly in January and February 2020, Donald Trump repeatedly downplayed the severity of the situation. For example: January 22, 2020: When asked about the coronavirus during an interview, Trump famously said, "We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. It’s going to be just fine." February 27, 2020: Trump stated, “It’s going to disappear. One day, it’s like a miracle, it will disappear.” March 2020: Trump also claimed that the virus would be "gone by Easter" (April 2020), and later expressed optimism about unproven treatments, such as hydroxychloroquine. Trump's public messaging during the early months of the pandemic was widely criticized for being overly optimistic and for underestimating the severity of the crisis. This contrasted with later developments, where the virus spread rapidly, contributed to a significant amount of confusion and frustration. 3- In the first six months of the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. experienced a sharp spike in unemployment due to widespread lockdowns and business closures. The highest unemployment rate reached was 14.8% in April 2020, which was the highest level since the Great Depression. The U.S. economy lost about 20.5 million jobs that month. In response to Great Depression levels of unemployment during Trump’s last year, Congress injected trillions of dollars into the economy that people couldn’t spend. A first year economics student could tell you THAT was what caused the inflation that followed. Finally, you can’t compare Biden’s legislative accomplishments with razor thin majorities in Congress to those of FDR who had historically huge majorities. The fact he got anything through that polarized, evenly divided congress is miraculous. There is really no precedent for it in US history. For this, Biden gets the opprobrium from your guest of being among the worst presidents in recent history. The fact is, he was dealt the political division and the mess created by probably the worst president in US history- the man who history shows set the stage for the pandemic, bungled its early stages when it might have been snuffed out, and then got the US into its worst economic crisis since the 1930s, and who the people have now somewhat stunningly re-elected.
I appreciate your take as a historian and want to thank you for giving the necessary context needed to understand the circumstances surrounding Biden's presidency. You give a pretty objective analysis of the situation. Also, I'm pleased that you highlighted the fact that Biden got significant legislation passed despite the incredibly slim majorities in Congress. Let that sink in. Biden arguably has more domestic policy accomplishments than any president since Lyndon Johnson. Recent presidents like Barack Obama and Bill Clinton came into office with bigger majorities and with a less polarized political climate than today. Yet, both were, at times, unable to enact most of their agenda due to political inexperience or a misunderstanding of Washington politics. Like you said, presidents like FDR and LBJ had overwhelming majorities and had no almost problem enacting their New Deal and Great Society programs. Not to mention both had a liberal-leaning Supreme Court during their terms whereas Biden had to deal with a 6-3 conservative court. In my opinion, Biden has been a better president than many people give him credit for. Truly underrated. His best skill as president is probably is relations with Congress. History will be kinder to him than people are right now.
Biden is easily one of the worst, most corrupt people to be President- he is one of the worst Presidents and will only add to that when the history is written- he is, however, the champion of going on vacation ( no kidding, he did us a favor).
Whoever got elected in 2020 was going to struggle with inflation. Also we did have some of the lowest inflation worldwide since then. I really think a lot of people here are a prisoner of the moment.
That's true. But also, this administration kept sending billions of dollars to other countries. I wouldn't say Biden is the worst. He's not the best either.
Oh inflation is just getting started. We've kicked the can down the road enough; the debt burden is too huge for taxes to cover the bill in a reasonable length of time and nobody wants to hold USTs any more. This is beyond the scope of any president to fix, let alone MMTers like Trump or Harris
I agree with saagar. It isn't the " im a perfect person job"; it's the presidency, where simple goodness is not the only value or skillset at play to bring about a prosperous and safe america.
Not a huge fan of breaking points… well I’m not huge fan of Krystal’s but Saagar is spot on. Biden will be remembered as the worst president in modern history and considering we live in a world with W. Bush… that is an incredible achievement
If I were asked this question this would be a 45 minute clip. The list is long and gets more abysmal and disturbing as it goes on. And I vehemently disagree with Saagar about both George W being worse. I waited until the endless arms to Israel with zero restrictions despite all signs pointing to this being a genocide before I made that determination. And make no mistake, the list will lengthen and get more filthy by the time January 20th rolls around. It can’t be put into words. The adjectives are not there. The most pathetic, pitiful, dangerous, destructive, narcissistic, out of touch, war mongering, hypocritical, incompetent and aloof leader in this nations history. There is no lower than Joe Biden and what his administration has brought about in 4 of the darkest years in this nations history.
7:44 reminds me of a P J O'rourke quote: No one capable of become President should under any circumstances be allowed to do the job. Maybe from Eat The Rich?
Very difficult subject. US presidents are probably judged primarily on the current household economy and somewhat on foreign affairs. The economy is a slow process and prior presidents might have as strong influence as the current president. At the moment US economy is considerably larger than the economy of China, after being almost at the same size a few years ago. But a lot of this money is in the pockets of the mega rich, and therefore most people do not notice it.
Biden did great for my family The company I work for has a 2 year backlog of sold Business Jets Plus the stock is up and the economy's doing great. If you love Trump, you would say the economy is bad but the number say otherwise
FDR and Great New Deal ... watch Thomas Sowell and or Milton Friedman -- the economy was already recovering AND it was the GND [keynesian economics] slowed the natural recovery, ultimately dragging on the pain.
Exactly! When you only read liberal authors/biographers on past presidents, like Saagar does, you never hear the truth as you just stated. I was born in ‘67, and all of my grandparents, including my maternal ones from Canada, loved The Polio Prince. My dad couldn’t stand FDR. And I’ve learned even more reasons to despise his administration.
The IMF said the US economy is "the envy of the world." Biden is leaving Trump one of the best economies in US history and is getting ZERO credit for it. Biden's quiet leadership comes with little glamour and no fanfare is truly an unappreciated asset during these unprecedented times. History will be kind to Joe Biden than most people are right now.
This discussion is so sad. Saagar reads liberal authors’ books on past presidencies, like Jean Edward Smith & Robert Caro, and praises the worst presidents, like the Polio Prince. He has been brainwashed. Herbert Hoover made his fortune as a mining engineer, not a banker. He was a genius at managing huge mining concerns around the world. He was also a progressive, like the terrible Teddy Roosevelt. Hoover took the ‘29 Crash & resulting recession and, along with horrible monetary policy from The Fed, turned a fairly manageable recession into a depression by 1932. But it was the Raw Deal policies of the Polio Prince that made the depression Grrrrrrreat! 1933-37 were terrible years for America. While the most of the world recovered economically, FDR’s Keynesian super-spending pushed us further into the Great Depression. The Polio Prince also slashed military spending to the bone so that he could pay grown men to plant trees! The sad result being the U.S. military was ranked 16th in the world, just behind Portugal, in 1940; which gave the Japanese the belief they could hit us hard enough at Pearl Harbor, Wake, Guam, and The Philippines that we would sue for peace and stay out of their attempt to take over the whole of the Far East, including Australia. Democrats got us into major wars in the 20th Century because they always cut defense spending for social programs.
@@keokihiga8462 I pay double for everything for every expense I had four years ago because he printed money, this devaluing my dollars. It's called hyper inflation. Not to mention his foreign policy which has us on the brink of world war 3.
Reason why Democrats lost is because of economy. Friend of mine who lives in California hits me up and asks for a loan. This was shocking as he earns more than me and have a house in California! Turns out he earns 250k and wife brings in another 70K, but after tax total earnings is less than half of that. He said that city had increased the property tax, along with the inflation has reduced his earning by 25%. So he was dependent on food bank for the last week of the month as he could not afford food if all bills were paid. My friend was 3rd of 4th gen staunch Democrat, he voted for Trump this year and is planning to leave California.
Carter did help overthrow the Shah which propelled Iran to become theological sponsor of terror state. That being said I personally believe they were tied as worse until Biden showed up.
Bush was absolutely worse. At the height of America’s unipolar moment, he completely destroyed our international reputation with the Iraq war. Not to mention deregulating the economy that allowed subprime and the great recession to occur. Not to mention the disastrous response to hurricane Katrina. Not to mention how deeply unpopular both him, and Dick Cheney were upon leaving office, both of them with worse approval ratings than either Biden or Trump.
Okay I literally can’t handle this - you could sub out Trumps name for FDR or Bernie when they talk about being a King or Jesus. All I’ve learned from this is that Trump copied FDRs strategy because it worked
It was Obama's Third Term. It was obvious from day one. So, if you're going to say " he's the worst president of all time " let's get it straightened out. Obama. Then Carter. This guy keeps saying he is a history nerd. What got America out of the Great Depression, is nothing but WW2. " I know what it takes to be President" lmao.
No he was wrong for invading Iraq because it destablized the region. Saddam was a bad man by all metrics as well as other like Kadafi, however those bad men kept worse demons in check and we got rid of them.
I know this content is like music to a lot of Dumpers especially when it is coming from a PoCs mouth, but here's the thing, Dump did exactly the same with golf. He's as smart as the deer that keeps looking at you while in the middle of the road when you're driving towards it at 40 mph. Don't be tribalistic. Just use common sense and realize that it depends on us individuals not just to vote but to set the mandate for politicians. Be active throughout 4 years and not just once every 4 years.
I mean he is a c student but that is all we wanted remember? Remember how bad things were in 2020? Things are much better now in 2024 . The worst president in modern history and maybe in our entire history is clearly Donald Trump.
Really? Trump had the vaccines rolling out. No president would have been able to stop a novel virus. If you want someone to blame, blame the virus’s creator: Anthony Fauci. Sounds like you have TDS.

Wouldn't necessarily agree with your Truman assessment but everthing else was spot on.

So when it comes to Trump, you argue that he should not be judged by his character, but by his accomplishments. But when it comes to Biden, you argue that he should be judged by his character, and not by his accomplishments. And that's why he's the worst president.
It’s embarrassing
"Creepy Joe" should DEFINITELY be judged by his accomplishments... of which there are exactly ZERO... in fact, his "accomplishments" are in the NEGATIVE column! End of assessment... except for that part about how he should be in PRISON for his traitorous involvement in Barisma while he was Vice President!!! The "two-tier" system of "injustice" incarnate!

Much of a president ‘s actions do not manifest until much later. A critical exception is the hope and optimism, or lack thereof, that a president can inspire in the people.
"Never underestimate Joe's ability to f^ck things up" Barrack Obama... and Biden proved that quote accurate over the last 4 yrs.
Thank you sir. Thank you for recognizing that majority of the federal government's role, inclduding the presidency, is foriegn policy.

Imagine the scene when they had to convince Biden not to run again. Presidential intervention!
Let’s recap just what led up to the Biden election and presidency-
1- In the two years prior to the pandemic, specifically in 2018 and 2019, there were reports of strains and reorganization within the U.S. intelligence community.
For example:
January 22, 2020: When asked about the coronavirus during an interview, Trump famously said, "We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. It’s going to be just fine."
February 27, 2020: Trump stated, “It’s going to disappear. One day, it’s like a miracle, it will disappear.”
March 2020: Trump also claimed that the virus would be "gone by Easter" (April 2020), and later expressed optimism about unproven treatments, such as hydroxychloroquine.
What planet do you live on?

Very difficult subject. US presidents are probably judged primarily on the current household economy and somewhat on foreign affairs. The economy is a slow process and prior presidents might have as strong influence as the current president. At the moment US economy is considerably larger than the economy of China, after being almost at the same size a few years ago. But a lot of this money is in the pockets of the mega rich, and therefore most people do not notice it.

There is no way Bush was worse than Carter or Biden. Saagar is out of his mind.
This guy is a clown...I think most of what he said was wrong.
