Is this "Personal Best" in the room with us right now?
🤣
@@RandomGameReviews No...
* sweaty author medal staring at me behind the psychiatrist *
**ooon yooour leeeft...**
Don't forget about cup of the day! It's one of the best reasons to go paid imo, a daily rotating tournament hosted 3 times a day using a community made map picked by the developers. It's a good reason to check in if you just want to spend 20-40 minutes playing and it's fun to learn a new map with thousands of other people.
Except COTD is not fun at all for anyone with less than 1K hours in game. The only reason to go paid is library acess until you have reached a skill level where you can try to compete. I mean just look at COTD maps this month, extremely technical and challenging pretty much every time.
Sorry but no. If you're not playing for self-improvement or streaming, there is no reason whatsoever to partake in COTD.
@@JMercerSniping I dunno, I have 1.5k hours now and loved COTD for the first 1K then stopped playing it as much. I just did my best each time and had fun which resulted in me slowly improving even though it wasn't my goal.
Cotd is pretty much the Main Mode, several thousand players play it everyday, and you get into an division with similarly placed players
@@JMercerSniping Nope. I have less than 600 hours, have played the game for about 2 years, and from the beginning was playing COTD. I now am consistently in the top 300 in qualifier in COTD now, thanks to the training of daily COTD's. COTD is the absolute best part of the game.
Est thing about cotd is that you always compete against players on your level. If your new and you are qualified as 3456. You will still have competition because other player are new too.
I actually found this because I'm a Trackmania player and watch TM content here on YT. I think you did such an excellent job of summing up what this game feels like and is about! :) If I ever try to get anyone else into the game, I'll be sending them to this video.
Thanks kindly, friend
i second this, got into trackmania about a month ago and he captured the experience really well
As a seasoned Trackmania player it's always interesting to watch how differently new players experience it. It's a great game though with an absolutely massive community and a ton of community made maps.
as another seasoned player I'm once again pained by nando's 2 tiered pricing system allowing people to get less out of the game than they should.

I think this review is really well written. Many reviews focus on presenting as much information about a game as possible. In the process, they often fail to answer the fundamental question: What is it like to play this game?
This review has good structure, doesn't get lost in details, flows well, and covers all the important points. It has a little bit of humor, but not so much that it distracts from the content.
Good stuff, keep it up!
Thank you for this lovely review of my review!
You forgot to include the small control intricacies that make the game so fun!
For example, press break midair to stop your car from moving in the pitch direction, countersteer midair to stop rotating your car in the yaw direction, speedsliding, bugsliding, drifting, ice sliding, and so much more!!
Awesome to see this game gain some more popularity :D
I'm definitely the noob review
There's so much I need to learn to be any good at this
I think you missed the part where they said they're new to Trackmania. They didn't forget, they just haven't learned yet.
@@RandomGameReviews fair point! The game does start becoming super fun once you get a hold of all of the little things the physics have to offer :)
@@RandomGameReviewsmake a few lives with wirtual for an actual review and get the author over that stupid personal best guy
Personal best is a real loser.
If anyone wants to link me up with this Wirtual who appears to be the God of Trackmania, I'm down
As someone who has been playing trackmania pretty much exclusively for a year or so, this Is a very accurate review. I didn’t realize at first how much of a skill gap there is in this game until I started playing it. You watch someone thats good at the game and you go “oh I can do that” but you cant. Its way harder than it looks and its a ton of fun. Beating your personal best that you’ve been grinding for a long long time, is the best feeling ever. Love this game, would absolutely recommend
Perfect showcase of trackmania's essence!
It also has a growing esports scene that is extremely interesting to follow and the regular paid subscription is probably one of the best bangs for a buck you can ever get :)
As a trackmania player, you explained the relationship with the self ghost perfectly
Forgoing hitting brake to lose out on one of the most essential driving techniques - the drift :D
If you play next time, you should try it :)
I feel like I've only scratched the surface...now to look up a video on drifting
@@RandomGameReviewsohhh good sir, you haven’t even *seen* the surface yet
@@RandomGameReviews There are a surprising amount of things you can do with one button
@@RandomGameReviews I think that's one of the biggest downfall of the game. It doesn't teach you ANYTHING. Fortunately the community is pretty amazing and there is ton of good resources to learn both basic and advanced techniques. I still think a good In-Game basic tutorial/school would do wonders to embrace new players and mitigate some of the unnecessary frustration some have to deal with.
Drifting is probably the most important to look at, then Ice and then Bobsleigh IMO, since the last two are not very obvious how to deal with. Also remember the golden rule of TM : Time spent in the air is time not spend accelerating.
@@FG-418at least ice has the training arcade room that comes around quite regular with the maps that tell you when to turn and brake etc. I do love showing people ice world records though because it looks so odd to people who don't play
As a Canadian world record holder I'm very happy seeing another Canadian rate the game I love

Surprisingly enjoyable video, nice job.
what i love most about TM ist that you play on a plane playingfield, as everybody has the same car and there is little to no RNG (few maps with moving objects, no enemies that can crash into you etc).
I like the simplicity of Trackmania. It's easy to pick up and play but difficult to master. I am currently playing the Free Summer Campaign and that is enough to keep me busy as I try to get all the gold medals. I am enjoying the game a lot so I just might upgrade to the paid options so I can have access to Track of the Day. Great Job on perfectly describing what Trackmania is all about.
Ahh I would have liked to hear more about the history of the franchise. It's changed a lot since Trackmania Nations, Trackmania United Forever, Trackmania 2, and like the 12 other versions that preceded the game known as Trackmania.
That's not exactly what to expect or hope for from a brand new player making a first impressions review of the game really
4 hour PBS documentary incoming
As a Trackmania player, this video made me so happy. Seeing someone's fierce for beating his own ghost being created was really funny and enjoyable. I left a like and subscribed. Great content, keep it up !!
Thanks so much, new friend!
As someone who has been playing Trackmania exclusively for the last 2 years, I can say that the game is very deep. There are tons of techniques going from things simple like drifting all the way to noseboosts, and there is also community made maps which are incredibly good and a great mapping tool it is easy and fun to map and uncountable other things
I feel the pain.
First, I often have a decent run the first time I try a new track, and then somehow get *worse* every time I try to improve.
Second, I did a world top 300 time on one popular track in my second week. It's been three years and I've never come close to world 1000 except on obscure tracks nobody plays...
I think there's sometimes power in pure reaction. I often did better when I wasn't overthinking.
Let me just say, the game as it is now has gone through many iterations, but the core gameplay engine goes back to the early 2000's. It's only gotten more fine tuned at its core. It's a style of competitive racing that I think deserves more opportunities. That track of the day option is new to this version, and is basically a battle royale with 63 other players around your skill level over 20 individual runs of a track you've only had 15 minutes of practice on. That conceptually deserves more attention.
I'm glad you liked it! It's worth mentioning that the standard access is a gateway drug and you will end up buying the club access membership. >.> This game is amazing for short bursts of play time and it's super easy to devote 3 minutes to and still feel like you did something.
Can confirm, as I have previously bought Standard Access and later bought club.
@@NothinButRock
Out of curiosity why go for club? I just bought standard access a couple days ago but I’m not really sure why you’d go for club other than racing against the top players ghosts, which seems useful but I’m also not good enough to actually compete with them 😂
please remember, theres also other trackmania games in the series, trackmania nations forever, is completely free to play and use.
I've only been playing Trackmania for a month or two and I'm hooked. I thought i was good with free to play, but then I upgraded and won't look back. I love the Cup of the Day. I'm usually bad but CotD means I get to be bad with other people. And the community is super nice/supportive.
You picked very well the philosophy of the game :) about pay options, the more u get invested in the game and want to play with the community, the more reasons you have use pay modes. There is a lot of community events where u need to pay to play them.
Nice you enjoyed it, hope to see u in game!
PD: Break is a very important part of the game :P when u learn to slide/drift.. it is a game changer! there is more than a dozen mechanics that, sadly, they are not teached in a tutorial or someting.
The Ghost of Canadamobile Past
Trackmania is so ridiculously fun and frustrating at the same time. It's a very Souls-like racing game, in the sense that you can dump hours into it to simply "master" one track. I've gotten good enough to earn Gold on a large majority of the tracks, but dare not push myself hard enough to go for the Author times. Some of those are insane and require much deeper understanding and legitimate practice, outside the realm of "casual" gaming.
Really entertaining video! Always fun to watch new people play trackmania. It’s not a massive community, but super welcoming. This game is all about self improvement, so I’m glad you highlighted that so well!
I used to play a lot of trackmania games back in the days, pretty fun! Awesome review :)
One of my favorite games. I just today got my first all author medal season and was super pumped about it. I got 500+ hrs into the game and I had 8 hrs into summer 21 track to get my final AT medal.
Congrats!
Conclusion on point. There is so much to do even with f2p. And even if there is sometimes a lot of frustration there is always your own goal to get better even if you fail 1000 times. I played tracks for several hours just to get that Author time😅
With just free to play, you get an entire game worth of content, every 3 months. The payed model only really becomes applicable if you get sucked into the world of Trackmania. Then the campaign tracks quickly become less and less important as you find new niches of the fanbase creating totally new and unique tracks, styles, campaigns, etc. Definitely worth it for people to try out. Worst case scenario, you lose nothing but time, better scenario, you get to enjoy an entire game for free, best case scenario you unlock a whole world of interesting content and it only costs you like 15$ a year or something.
I was really impressed with the business model and how not predatory it is
Who’s going to tell him about drifting? Through watching this, I felt like if that piece fell into place, it would’ve unlocked a whole new level of competing with the PB ghost
Good summary from my experience, though I enjoyed the track of the day more than you seemed to. The live elimination rounds are very fun since everyone gets the same amount of time to learn the track.
Genuinely wish you could have gotten to experience a cup of the day. For many that is the most fun part of the game :)
Oh man, as someone who has 400 hours in it. You dont know how much i i tied my pb to the thousands
I had one EXACT tie and I wasn't recording for it.
@@RandomGameReviews lmao, its so bad yet so funny. If you bought the second tier i would advise playing cotd, this is a tournament that happens evry day and is host by nadeo. If you wanna learn more about it i would suggest watching people like wirtual
As a trackmania player who got this video in recommended, you explained it very well, it's a fun game and it's even funnier the better you get
The most compeling reason to get the club access is you can drive against other players' ghosts and that is an easy way to get better at any map
I tried it when you originally posted about it, and man, it is way too frustrating for me. Great vid
This randomly showed up on my YT recommendations and as a fellow BC player I want to say welcome to the game! It is interesting to see the perspective of a brand new person to the game compared to my fairly experienced one (I've played Trackmania in some capacity off and on over the past 10+ years). You particularly explained very well about why the game is so addictive. The one thing I think you really missed is that despite the controls being essentially 4 buttons (brake is important!), is the incredible depth and high skill ceiling causes by all the techniques there are to learn which take thousands of hours to master.
From my perspective, the only things that interest me are the ones locked behind the paid subscription, particularly track of the day. I find Nadeo's campaign maps are generally pretty terrible and other than the first few days after the season is released I don't have any interest in touching them when there are far better built maps by the community to play. For me the Club access tier is absolutely worth it (on sale) just because it gets me access to leaderboard ghosts to race against (in addition to that irritating Personal Best guy).
It is interesting to see someone review Trackmania as I have sunk thousands of hours into it and have top 100 times in the world on campaign maps. Also don’t forget about online race modes such as cup of the day, and custom knockout modes and point modes don’t know what all of them are called) ones made by the players.
I love this game so much, got this vid recommended to me and you perfectly explained that the feeling of constant improvement makes this game fun.
Plus the community is great
Everyone seems so nice!!
A good way of thinking of the different subscription tiers:
Standard: Unlocks all the community made tracks, as well as cup and track of the day which are very popular game modes
Club: S K I N S
this is a beautiful video! thanks for bringing light to trackmania, i hope you had fun playing
One thing of note is that this is the first season in tm2020 where the season has track medal progression requirements. There are a ton of mechanics and techniques in the game to control your car better. It’s a great solo game to play and the community is fairly positive.
The majority of the game is outside of the season and worth the yearly pass but play what you have fun playing!
This game looks so fun!!! My favorite racer will always be Jolt Family Robot though 😂
The piece starting at 7:37 is great. Mostly because the line, "I feel a fire in my very soul," encapsulates so much of this game for me
BRO THANK YOU!! you for sure gave this game the love it deserved. As someone who's been playing everyday for a year club access was perfect. Messing with my skins was fun and allowed more personalization while being able to watch the WR's POV made figuring the small intricacies of the game so much easier. I'd say it does give an advantage to players but only at higher levels. But if you are gonna be spending that much time and effort its still much cheaper than most games around.
You can also join specific servers, where you have a more competitive leaderboard with players who play it more. These are also (mostly) curated and are of higher quality
Cup of the day alone is worth the 13 CAD gives you a new track each day to learn and compete with tens of thousands
in that one track you kept playing try to avoid the sand, since it slows you down. also try to not steer too sharp and not during upshifts because that gives you a speed penalty on dirt as well. and most importantly reduce air time by going very gradual down those slopes. every sec in the air is a sec not accelerating on the ground. with these techniques your pb will explode and you get author easy peasy
good video but i do wish you touched on how in how in depth the mechanics are. not sure about other people but personally i dont think id like the game nearly as much if there werent so many little things you can do to gain time. also do you use the dpad??
One of the biggest challenges I face with this project is how little free time I have to do it, which rears it's head when I show noob level skill at a game with a really high skill ceiling.
But I'm thrilled at how many players have jumped into the comments to fill in the gap. It's made me rethink how I approach my research going forward.
As a Trackmania player who came into the game already knowing about the existence of mechanics like drifting, speedslides, air braking, etc it feels especially painful to watch someone go in completely blind who doesn't even know those exist...and the game devs never really made a way to teach anyone how to do those things, or point them in the direction of clubs like TM School who have tracks where you can practice those mechanics (assuming you'd already found out of their existence through word of mouth)...the level of complexity and nuance in this game with such simple controls is immense, and one of the best parts of the game is that, as long as you keep playing, you will keep improving...I have roughly 900 hours into the game and I'm still years behind on my skill level, but I've already improved so much...
Trackmania player whos also from BC here :) well done with the review! Very well put together, though wouldve been nice if you went a bit more into to track of the day and talked about how the cup of the day works. Im glad you enjoyed the game, though!
Thanks, local friend!
I really wanted to play cup of the day but due to my schedule (work/kids/blahblahblah) I could never make it work during the start times.
@RandomGameReviews ah that sucks, but understandable. Hopefully you get to experience cotd sometime, it really is a lot of fun :)
The return of Jolt Family Robot Racer style narration in RGR reviews, 2023 (but this looks way more fun)
Trevor was a much more formidable adversary
u can play maps without paying by downloading them externally. The only things the subscription provides is the access to the clubs, to change ur skin and to play the COTD, which tbf is the best part of TM
highly entertaining video; I've watched a shit ton of TM content but never played it and your video had me wanting to try it. Your jokes are just on point!
Definitely worth having a go
I'm not very good at it, but had a good time
Servers are great too! You get to them from the 'live' tab then 'club rooms' I think they call them. The most popular ones are at the top! In servers you get to play and chat with a couple of people playing any given server. Ask eachother for tips, chat shit, etc.
My favourite is Evo Ice Beginner. You can catch me there sometimes @Hatchos
"this game is very simple in terms of controls" oh no no nono 😂
Should we tell him about controlled speed slides, zoops, wiggles, brake taps, how sliding and acceleration changes depending on speed, air control, bugslides, and the list goes on :D People with 10k+ hours still learn new controls and techniques every year
3 different buttons go brrrrrr
Trackmania hasn't lost its appeal since I've been playing Nations almost a decade ago, sadly the chat got a bit toxic. I was happy to see streamers again (like Wirtual) playing TM 2020 and talk about the campaigns, community maps and cotd etc. Been playing more or less seriously for almost a year again and raking in author medals on the new campaign. Love it.
Damn I remember playing this game against my dad 15 years ago while his laptop was overheating on my lap.
"Beating the self-satisfied douchebag that was me a minute ago" is the best thing I've heard in a while.
This is a really good video. Keep up the awesome work
Brother something's telling me you never found out about hitting triangle to restart from the last checkpoint, huge for quality of life
I definitely knew about it but it just didn't feel right...
Is there no disadvantage to it?
@@RandomGameReviewswell it costs about a second plus however long you drove past the checkpoint, but it makes learning a map easier, because you get to practice parts you won‘t reach that often on a no-respawn run, and it also teaches you how to save certain setups or how to drive the next part at different speeds. So to summarize, of course you need a run without respawning to beat the gold medals, but it helps with learning the maps
@@RandomGameReviewsif you have the game on pc you can get a plugin that tells you what your time would have been without reapawns. So it basically shows your current time and subtracts the respawn time (the respawn is usually caused by crashing). This is very useful to know your pace on a map as now you can respawn 100 times to not crash a section and then see how fast you are on a crashless run.
how do you only have 3K subs?!!! come on you need way more
Tell your friends!
Fun fact, the 3 year subscription is cheaper in the long run. Just a helpful hint for people who want to purchase a subscription.
Good review, last thing you missed the amazing and dedicated community ! Cheers
Ohh boy, you do not know the frustration i feel when i get on this amazing run then fuck it up at the end
I swear this game has that Dark Souls or Rogue-like learning loop for each track
Its interesting, If you wouldve done this 4 months ago the fact at 1:59 about needing a certain amount of medals to progress wouldve been irrelevant, as its one of the newest features in the game
Woah woah woah. What game is playing in the background at 0:27 ? I know I’m here to find out if trackmania is worth the yearly subscription but that game looks kinda cool 😂
That's Spacelords and it's free to play
My review: ruclips.net/video/R_FYdaAInpw/видео.htmlsi=NygMWUiEEahQdop1
@@RandomGameReviews thanks man! Lemme check out your review since you have one for it
There are many community maps that nobody cares about, it's true - but all of the best ones are also community made. The official maps of the current season are quite competitive, but they become irrelevant once the next season starts. I don't think there is a single map from past seasons that people still care about, but there are many great community maps that stay relevant for a long time.
I personally play on multiplayer servers that focus on the style of map I enjoy the most. The server owners selected some maps for me and all I need to do is drive. Being able to see other people and have a chat is a nice bonus, though they don't impact your actual gameplay all that much.
Theres a story about a dude called Trabadia i think, who apent 1000 hours just trying to improve by 0.01-0.001 seconds on a track.
It's like a modern legend of a guy being tortured by Greek gods
One must imagine Trabadia happy
If you ever play again make sure to reduce airtime because you dont accelerate.
Yes my dudes! Everyone welcome on TrackMania, the most wholesome community you'll encounter! :D
Great video, am a Trackmania player.. you capture a lot about the experience.
Wait until you discover Kacky.
These look ridiculous
yup so true, also i want add one thing, all trackmania car is equal, only win based by skill there no buy to win.
Damn that free title aged bad
Did they start charging for the base game?
The two tiered pricing system is one of the worst mistakes the developer has made. Too many people do exactly what you did and buy the cheaper option not knowing that the ability to watch the run of anyone you can see on any leaderboard is a very valuable tool for learning how to be fast on maps.
The only other thing you missed is cup of the day. Either paid tier gets access to a once daily (plus two reruns) tournament where a new map appears and you have 15 minutes to learn it, then you're put in a group of 64 players near your skill ability and play an elimination tournament. 3000-4000 people play the main event (timed for europe) every day, with another few hundred playing the reruns timed for the rest of the world (the map is known for these reruns, so the racing is very different but less prestigious.)
As a Trackmania player I'd like to say that this is a great overview of the game but you did missout a very important part of the game which is Cup Of The Day, and I'd go as far as to say that it's one of the most important game modes. Everyday at a set time a new community build map is released where a competition is held, first you have 15 mins to qualify which will determine your devision (64 players in each division). You then go onto compete against everyone in your division in knockout rounds until you are the only one standing. This gamemode allows you to compete against people at a similar skill level which is not determined by an algorythm like it is in many other games as your devision is based on the best time that you achieve in qualifiers.
Can't review it if I'm never available when it's going 🤷♂️
