Cool to see an idea come to life. Thanx for shout out. Happy Halloween. If you want something with hysteresis BigClive did a tear down and reverse engineering of a chinesium dusk to dawn sensor. It uses a unique circuit configuration using a 555 timer. It also incorporates some filtering to eliminate inadvertent triggering from lightening flashes or car headlights hitting the light sensor. Amazing for a simple 555 circuit. I definitely tucked that one away in my "Circuits To Remember" file for future use. CHEERS

      Thanks! Happy Halloween.
I take a look, sounds interesting.

That's the neat thing about electronics, almost always more than one way to accomplish the same task. :)

Thanks Doug. Yes there are, I do like IGBTs for this type of circuit.

Thank you for your tutorials. I just recently discovered them! I hope to improve my background knowledge as I dig into my older ham gear (I have an sb-200 amp, and an old Heathkit HX-10 transmitter). I noticed the buzzing of the relay when the sensitivity was turned up. I presume that's because it has to operate with lower current from the diode since the base has minimal bias from the low light. I can see where your doubling up on the IGBT would take care of that. I was thinking about this as I imagine a turn on event driven by sunrise. There would be a slowly increasing light level and I wonder if you would end up with a sustained buzzing for a while with the simpler circuit?
bit of non-sequitur, but I tried the link for your free ebook and it wants a password now. Have you changed your mind about distributing it free?

Light controlled relay- Now with 28% fewer components! Same great taste.

Third experiment...What would happen if you put a zener diode or even a standard diode at the gate with a .7 volt drop in it? Would it make it so the florescent lights don't make the coil in the relay get just enough voltage to hum but not enough to pull the coil in? I guess that would be in effect like a Schmitt trigger. Thanks for sharing this and have a great day!

Thank you and your welcome. I think a Schmitt trigger might help.

The issue I had when I built something similar using a 741 and a photo-resistor was that i needs hysteresis since at sunrise and sunset the light changes gradually and so the relay will buzz for several minutes till its enough to switch on properly. I like the simplicity of this circuit so do you think it could be added with a couple diodes and another pot?

This was what I had in mind but I didn’t explain it correctly. 👍
