I use the rode ai micro, while it only takes 1/8 stereo input, my XLR mic works beautifully on it with a XLR to 1/8 cable. Plus you can connect 2 mic’s to it and have two XLRs connected to your iPhone/iPad
Yeah that’s a great little interface. I’ve done several videos on it and use it routinely with my 3.5mm mics. This condenser mic requires phantom power so that creates a problem, but I have some other XLR that do work with it.
I’m trying to just make voice over videos on my iPad Pro M2 so for that setup I just need to get the scarlet 3rd gen and an XLR mic and I’ll be good to go?
Awesome video, dude! How do you keep your ipad charged though? Seems like that would be an issue because your ipad is powering the mic, and the focusrite. If you have any ideas on how to charge the tablet while connected to the focusrite please do respond! 😊
If I use an interface with an XLR microphone and my iPad Pro, -and I have that MetaRecorder app… do you know if this would work for recording an audiobook? I found out using my Apogee Hypemic is not ideal for an audiobook, because it’s a usb mic. But I’m wondering if all I need to do is get the right microphone and an interface?
Technically you can record an audiobook with either a USB mic or an XLR mic, however, many nicer condenser mics are XLR and require phantom power. So yes, using an audio interface like a Scarlett works great. Just use a nice mic and record in a quiet room with no echo.
Thank you for your video! Can you tell us why you need to feed the audio out from Audio Interface to the Camera? Is it for syncing audio between video and audio files?
It’s just an optional use case and for me it’s because I’m doing a RUclips video at the same time as recording a podcast or voiceover. Technically, you could just use the camera mic on the Sony and then sync it to the recorded iPad audio in post-production. The other thing is the audio interface needs the power from the iPad or a computer to work. You have to plug the USB-C into one of those devices and then you can send that signal to your camera (even if you don’t want to record to the iPad or computer). Hope that makes sense. The interface is not a traditional mixer but you can use it like that to record audio to the camera using a condenser microphone such as the Neumann that requires Phantom power.
Thanks for the video! I have a problem: I am using an almost identical setup, however, it only records into the left channel/ear. Are there any solutions for this?
I’ve got my mixing board running into my iPad. Is there a way to have the mixing board mic and guitar override the iPad mic and just take the input from the mixing board? There isn’t any settings that I can find like on my laptop where it shows that it recognizes the mixing board and then allows me to click on either the mic board or continue using the internal iPad mic. Am I missing where that is in settings under mic?
Not sure, haven’t tried a setup like that. But when you connect a USB mic directly or an audio interface like a Focusrite Scarlet that overrides the built-in iPad mic. So it seems that would be the case here as long as the iPad sees the mixer. Not all devices can be seen though through the USB-C (or Thunderbolt), so make sure yours is compatible.
Thanks for the awesome video! It really simplifies things. But hey, if you don't mind me asking, I noticed you're recording with a sample rate of 48 kHz and a bit depth of 24 bits. I thought my iPad Pro could only do 44.1 kHz.
I think that may have been the case years ago or if you’re just using the Voice Memo app with auto settings,, but iPads and iPhones can record 48k 16bit in the native camera app, and higher using third-party audio and video apps. Thanks for watching!
Do you know if you can set up multiple mics? (Shure SM7B) Get one interface box per mic, or is there one that you know of where you can plug up multiple mics? Thanks for your help
Technically, yes, using the Rode AI Micro with XLR to 1/8 adapters, as long as the XLR mics are self-powered/battery powered, because there’s no phantom power. But you can’t connect Scarlet I/o for example, because it’s USB-C, but you could to an iPad.
What post-processing software do you recommend for adding voiceover/music to a video? I screenshoot educational video tutorials using OBS and sometimes would like to add a better audio track or background music. Only making about one a month, inexpensive option preferable. Thanks!
Does your iPad have lightning or USB-C? If it’s the latter you should have no problem. If it’s lightning it should still work with an adapter, but sometimes they don’t. In that case you might need to use an audio interface like a Focusrite Scarlett Solo and the XLRs.
Thank you. I'm using the i/o irig, gen 4 ipad pro and logic pro with a rode nt1. I have crazy latency that is actually much worse than on my old first gen iPad Pro with the same setup. Any idea?
Nice instruction and always succinct. The iRig Pre saved the day during the lockdown when I was forced to ramp up live video and podcasts for church. Now I am the video guy and I have a new hobby that I love.
This one no, at least not with an iPhone because it needs power and the lightning port isn’t powerful enough, but other USB-C phones should work or iPhones will work with other audio interfaces like the iRig Pre.
Great video, thanks for the information my friend!

Yes, that would work. Or you could get a USB mic and skip the interface. Really just depends on what you’re doing.
Have you tried using the front facing camera with your iPad while recording audio as well? If so, how did it turn out?
Great tips 👍

The Magic Keyboard has a second charging port for the iPad. 👍🏻 Thanks for watching!
Is it possible to use the Focusrite and hook it up to the ipad and also at the same time hook up ethernet to the ipad? If so, what would I need?
I haven’t tried that as I’ve just used WiFi, but an adapter like this should work… amzn.to/3GCvRml
Can I record video by plugging that into a iphone 16 pro max USB C for the camera?
You can record video out to an SSD via USB-C, and you can also send a feed to a monitor.

@@iphoneographers Thx for reply! That’s what I did as well. I was using built in mic for syncing video with iPad.
So ima get a louder vocal with a audio interface right?
Yeah typically. You have more control over the input gain and you can also use different mics that require phantom power.
can you help after recording the sound on the i pad and the video on the cam how you sync them together please
Did you figure that out?
How well would this work with the Rodecaster Pro?
I haven’t personally used it but I’ve seen others talk about it and it evidently works well.
Very informative video! Can you tell me if the 32bit float wave audio files produced on the Zoom F3 recorder are supported on LumaFusion?
Thanks for the video! I have a problem: I am using an almost identical setup, however, it only records into the left channel/ear. Are there any solutions for this?

Thanx for the great vid!
Was wondering.. what cable do you need - main out to camera?
Good luck with your channel 🙏🏻 cheers Mitchell

Some of the larger interfaces like the 4i4 have multiple XLR inputs… amzn.to/45xJuMZ
What is powering the FocusRite? Does it not need drivers?
Just USB-C
Can I connect 2 Xlr mics and audio interface to iPhone and record video?
Technically, yes, using the Rode AI Micro with XLR to 1/8 adapters, as long as the XLR mics are self-powered/battery powered, because there’s no phantom power. But you can’t connect Scarlet I/o for example, because it’s USB-C, but you could to an iPad.
Ty
Can I hook this up to an iPad 10th generation? What do I need?
These setups can work with basically any iPad. Just need a USB cable to connect to the I/O.
What post-processing software do you recommend for adding voiceover/music to a video? I screenshoot educational video tutorials using OBS and sometimes would like to add a better audio track or background music. Only making about one a month, inexpensive option preferable. Thanks!
I’d look at LumaFusion. Works on iPhone or iPad. And you can keep it really simple, or do advanced stuff as well.
Can I get an exact list of the hardware needed to get my ATR 2100 mic to use in my iPad? Tried plugging it in but not enough power for it.

Hello. Great video, as always. The MetaRecorder app works with all xlr mics? Thanks
As long as you can get power into the XLR mic (if required) then yes it will work with an audio interface. Thanks for watching!
Thank you. I'm using the i/o irig, gen 4 ipad pro and logic pro with a rode nt1. I have crazy latency that is actually much worse than on my old first gen iPad Pro with the same setup. Any idea?
Irig for me had very low quality sound. I’d be eager to try a focusrite
Make sure your cable is thunderbolt 4
Would I be able to use a Cloud Lifter as well with this setup for my SM7B?
I haven’t tried, but if you’re using an audio interface like a Focusrite it should go in between and work fine.
@@iphoneographers awesome. Thank you so much
