Did some work experience in a yard as a teenager (30+ years ago), one of the jobs they gave me was sanding the antifouling, just had one of those crappy paper masks and nothing like coveralls, I ended up being red with the stuff... yeah, I didn't end up as a shipwright after that...
Thank you for all your footage and info. I would be grateful on your opinion on a production cat that would be in line with what you are trying to achieve and is available off the shelf. Would the ORC 52.2 be the best bang for buck ?
Lot in that short vid. Why not build a return flange on the bottom (curved part) of the half bulkhead so you could just glue it down? Or is that not structural enough?
Vacuum infusion produces fewer voids between fibers and can significantly increase tensile strength over wet layup which is weakest as resin often ends up mostly on the surface of fibers. Vacuum bagging is slightly stronger than wet layup because more of fibers become in contact with the resin but still has voids. Say you gain 35% tensile strength with infusion, then the consumables and your extra time sunk may be worth the extra cost.
I remember my dad building a wooden desk with cupboards from scratch for me when I was a kid. Now being 44, my biggest passion is building / modifying / refitting my boat and other diy projects. It‘s so valuable your boys not only see what their dad does, but also learn what it takes. Just golden, they‘ll have this for the rest of their lives! 🫶🏻
You should check out SailLife. Hes a clever Danish dude doing up a cat in a Florida boatyard (his second restoration) at the moment and is presently learning his way vacuum infusion etc. He's completely self taught from what I can tell. He also has a Bamboo 3D printer.
Best boat building maintenance channel on You Tube.
Cheers mate
The kids will be such well rounded young adults living like this. Really good video thanks!
Thanks mate. Glad you enjoyed the vid
Nice to seee the process. Thanks for sharing
You're welcome
Amazing job you guys are doing.
Should be amazing when we're done 🤞
Love the video's guys! 🍻
Thanks!

Good job boys. There was more content in this video than the last ten episodes. More doing less flapping gums.👍

Basically it would not be worth the effort. It would be extremely difficult to try and follow the exact curvature of the hull.
Full pro, full tyvek, full face mask, barefeet 😂 Totally my style
🤣🤣🤪 of course! That because he's on the boat. If it was in the shed he'd be wearing his Samoan Safety Boots 🩴
Possibly not a simple answer but in your experience what are weight/cost/time pros and cons of infusion V wet layup (with/without vacuum) V prepreg

@@CraigOverend hi, regarding the bilge paint. Is the paint to make it look good? Or has other benefits ?
You need to paint any bilge as you need a smooth easy to clean surface. What you use as a bilge paint can vary quite widely.

Does infusion still run the risk of boiling the resin? Like youve talked about in your recent videos.
Yes it does

Yes we watch SailLife. Liked his work on his sailboat Athena.
