Putting plaster (even bandages) directly on your skin-- let alone sensitive facial skin-- is foolish bordering on dangerous. Plaster, when it sets, heats up significantly (especially if layered). There are plenty of cited examples of injuries caused by plaster burns on the net. Temperature of the plaster can vary depending on layering, temp of water, type of plaster bandage (eg, quick-setting bandages get much warmer than slow-set), but they all get hot.
There is also no warning about possible dermal (skin) reactions to plaster applied directly to the skin. I thought he would use the petroleum jelly to create a protective skin, but that was just to keep hairs from sticking. In fact, he uses wipes to clean off skin oils, which makes facial skin even more sensitive to possible allergens.
The above is exactly the reason people use a layer of alginate between the plaster bandages and the skin. It's not just for detail: the alginate provides a barrier between the plaster and the skin.
Lastly, do this WITH a partner! Besides the "extra hands", they can also prove life-saving if something goes terribly wrong. Suffocation, severe allergic reactions (anaphylactic shock), burns, asphyxiation from vomiting into a closed plaster mask stuck to your face, etc. are some of the more extreme, but entirely possible, situations that can result.
I love that people share DIY stuff on the net: wish I'd had it when I started out! But please be careful and check out and POINT OUT potential hazards associated with techniques, and put them in the tutorials (in BOLD subtitles if possible!). I can totally imagine my 9yr old self watching this tutorial, over-doing the layers of plaster, getting it stuck on my face and getting severely burned or worse because it looked so easy and I was an idiot-kid willing to try anything to make monster stuff.
