How often do you eat lobster?
In Alberta, Canada here, so I generally have a contact in PEI so we get them shipped here from there. We do some big lobster fest parties at least 4 times a year, sometimes 6. We will bring in 200 lobsters for each party. It’s a private party, but once you join a couple of car clubs and contact the friends you have made over the years, when people start replying is when we get the numbers to order. We often freeze a half dozen to a dozen, depending on how well they are eaten etc. Our friend does a couple of massive briskets on the smoker starting the day before. We actually hire a catering company to do the lobsters and salads for us. They will do tails to eat with butter and the claws go into lobster rolls for lunch the next day. Show up at 4:00 pm eat, drink (byob, the rest is on my buddy & I) stay if you are drinking. We rent as many RVs as we can so people aren’t driving. I own 4 now as I snap up lightly used, but nice 5th wheels we keep at the cabins all summer otherwise. The fuel hauling those things back & forth rivals the lobster bills!! 😂😂😂.
We are on the prairies/foothills so the only other “seafood” we get here are “Prairie Oysters”! 😂😂😂. (If you’re not sure, look em up!) Heh heh. For the springtime feast we have those as part of the feast as well. We process about 1500 head of calves the 3 days prior. Cowboys & hot rodders with live bands! My cousin’s band and one or two we hire. Ones gotta be country (ugghhhh😂).

My father was from Maine, and he also caught lobster. He passed away when I was 6 years old, and I kind of wish that I had followed in his footsteps. You're living the dream, my friend. Best of luck
Seriously doubt it...Not shown is all the downtime they experience, and all the arguments from their women when a storm shores them for weeks at a time...Or, they draw a bad lease claim (spots they are allowed to fish), and it wasn't maintained by the last crew...

I liked seeing his dad toss the barrels over from his boat. All the old Lobstermen in Maine have serious old man strength. His dad was probably doing that with the metal barrels 40 years ago.

I've used brunt boots for 4 years now. Definitely no breakin period. Awesome boots. Awesome quality. I work construction so I use a pair every year but I always love a new pair of brunts. Try out the laceless pair. It's all I use, flip the soles and enjoy your feet thanking you on the daily. ❤. Definitely order same size as your regular shoe size. They come bigger then usual but not too big. I wear 10.5 in shoes and get 10.5 in boots.

Great video, grew up on my fathers and uncles boats as a sternman out of Boston Harbor(Winthrop) We couldn't wait for the Poggy boats to come up North with the migration. Would feed them some food and in turn they would swing the arm over and fill our boat. Was a great time to be on the water. Miss it terribly.

This is without dought the most rewarding and interesting utube video I have EVER watched. It was almost as if I was one of the many working! I felt the excitement too. You guys are well rounded. I like it you adhere by the quota. It's exhausting having to break the quota to the authorities. Do the right thing and there will be no excessive fees and as reality has it gaol time if you can't afford it. We'll done for respecting the rules. Serenity. One of the things I love about these videos is that it demonstrates the economic system of Distributism. This system put the means of production into the hands of local business owners rather than in the hands of huge corporations. This also puts the governance into the hands of these business owners. Unfortunately I don't think this aspect of the system is true of the lobster industry in Maine.
There is 5,500 boats registered to lobster in Maine to remain registered they have to follow Federal and State quotas that regulate the whole industry with some variation between Maine, NH, Massachusetts, Maryland and possibly Rhode Island. The most "lobster industry" ships are in Massachusetts with their daily catch limits because some of their fishing spots are more protected from the open ocean so they can safely anchor and be out for a week or two at a time instead of daily before heading to the processing plants. As we got better at communicating and working together a lot of businesses became more sustainable across the board. Now, onto hunting invasive green crabs to eradication in New England.
Trust me; Big corporations would do it if they could...They cant, because then they would only work hard enough not to get fired; VS, the current system where only the best workers have a job...

I'm from Nova Scotia, and there are thousands of these fish in our harbors. They are a pain in the ass.

We ate all the lobsters we could when we were visiting NS. Being in AB sucks seafood is so expensive.

Have you thought of fabricating a device you can place on the top of the barrel like a large funnel to keep from having so many fish lost out the sides and being shoveled off the deck? Just an idea from a landlubber in Texas. Also, have you ever eaten any of these fish, or are they not something good to eat? When your casting your nets, it just reminds me of the Apostles fishing. Of course they didn't have drones or motors on their boats. Red skies at night and hope you have a successful season.
They are technically edible -- not poisonous -- but extremely unpalatable. They are essential forage for coastal species from all kinds of birds including bald eagles to many predatory fish up to tuna and sharks and marine mammals -- dolphin and whales.
They’re great rations, can them in tomato sauce, olive oil or even aged and fermented! Not so great as a fresh fish though!

Found your short videos on accident and this was my first full video watch. I love the "behind the scenes" of any industry to see what goes into it. Yours is no different! I dont eat lobster (or seafood for that matter), but I love learning and watching what you do! Keep up the awesome work and keep making these videos!!!!
I used to do this on the Chesapeake Bay on a little larger scale. We used planes as spotters and our circle was a little bigger . Down here we call them Bunkers

We pile the net same as you when hauling back with enough fish for our limit. If we doubt we have a large enough set, we’ll put it the rings on the bar when we start bringing it back aboard just to be ready to set out again.

I’ve been seeing you Jacob on Facebook for a while and didn’t know you had a RUclips channel but I’m really glad I found it a few months ago. I’ve always loved lobster and it’s really cool seeing them getting caught and everything that goes into it

Granted, i know sh*t all about fishery. That being said i like this channel because of how sustainable you guys seem.
Catching your bait, using it in the same area, and releasing everything that doesnt fit the criteria.
Totally agree the permit market should be open, or at least be open to fishers using the fish as bait, there could even be a very strong argument for only allowing localy caught bait imo (but i guess thats where we would differ from opinion 😂)
