No because it doesn't have factors other than 1. A prime number is a number that has factors 1 and itself

If we consider n=8 then n+1= 9 which is divisible by 3 and n-1= 7 which is not divisible by 3. But 8 is not prime. Which contradicts your rule. So, the rule that you described is not reliable.
It is one way of cancelling composite numbers so you can narrow down on possible prime numbers

This method has a problem when there are twin primes.
(41,43) (59,61) (71,73). Students don't know when to accept both operations and when to accept either + or -.
This method fails utterly after 100.
For eg neither 119 nor 121 is a prime number.
some more examples which are not prime but can be expressed in 6n+1, 6n-1 form
133,143,161,187,203, 209,217,221,247,253,259, 287,299,301

Another VERY easy way to figure out prime numbers is:
If a number ends with 0,2,5 it cannot be a prime number.
If a number ends with 1,3,7,9 it has a POSSIBILITY that is may be prime. To make sure, we have to add all the digits in that number and if the answer of the sum ends with 1,3,7,9 then it is definitely a prime

This won't give you a definite prime answer. Like 91 total is 9+1= 10 whose further total will be 1+0=1 but 91 itself isn't a prime number
