"Where do keys come from? I'll tell you when youre older" hahahahahhahahaa! love hearing the voice track by itself.I think im falling in love with C#, sorry Eb.
I love the way Trent used this song to wave goodbye in the end of Lights In the Sky Tour perfomance. That looked and sounded as true farewell to all and everything.
I had this song on a loop in my head (unintentionally) for about 14 hours while my daughter was being born. Never got tired of it. Still not tired of the kid either! ☺
This album stayed in my car cd player for weeks on release and this song was my favorite and burned into my brain. Trent gave me a shock and amazement when I took out the cd and the previously black disc was now white. I later found out it changed color with heat when it was just the right temperature that my finger left a white fingerprint on it temporarily. All the black is really white if you believe it. Just another layer of genius to year zero.
I never realized that it has a bossa nova feel, but that actually makes lots of sense. And I frickin love bossa nova. So I can totally feel it. (Can you feel iiiiiit?) Interesting that it reminded you of "Ashes to Ashes" considering the first line of verse 2 is "Dust to dust"
David Bowie is one of Trent's heroes and inspirations. Considering Trent's influence in the industry, I don't think he expected to be inspirational for other artists, like Johnny Cash.
I don’t entirely know that Johnny Cash was actually inspired by him, rather than the American Recordings label wanting him to cover it, for novelty’s sake.
@@billyalarie929 @William Alarie Producer Rick Rubin talks about how the Johnny Cash cover of Hurt came to be made on Lex Fridman's podcast (here: ruclips.net/video/H_szemxPcTI/видео.html). If I recall correctly, Rubin says it was his idea for Cash to make that cover and that he had sent it to Cash on a CD a couple times that he burned with a bunch of other tracks that he thought Cash would do well.
I was lucky enough to see this performed live during The Lights In The Sky Tour of 2008 in NJ. I think this was the last year Josh Freese played with the band, as Rubin took over the drum duties in 2009. In This Twilight was the closing song, and the outro was jammed for an extended time as the band members were introduced and left the stage after being highlighted. Very classy. It felt like we weren't gonna see them again for a VERY long time. There should be multi-cam videos of this song being performed live from this specific tour on RUclips.
That mashup fing is awesome. Even deeper is one of my favorite songs from The Fragile, and In this Twilight is one of my favorites from Year Zero. They work really well together.
Can we just take a quick moment to acknowledge how incredibly articulate Ixi is in this video? She has always been, but the amount of precise editing and scripting here is another level. I can imagine that choosing what to say also means choosing what *not* to say in the short amount of time of a RUclips video (especially when us, the viewers, have the span of attention of a goldfish). What a joy to watch. It’s fun to notice how she has been learning and adapting along her journey, and how much fun she might be having these days with every new video. Keep it up, Ixi!
I hope to G.O.D. that Trent heard your mashup, ASMR for days!! As for the context of this song, twilight is just before complete dusk, the dusk being the end of humanity. It feels like a great relief, played all in major chords, just before Zero Sum, a song spoken as if it's their last words.
This song reminds me of The Great Below, Hurt, The Perfect Drug and a select few others, since each has very romanticized lyrics and outlooks.. very much like love letters, they're from the heart more than the mind. Trent uses that to really draw contrast to the very real trauma the narrator is facing.. romanticizing an already horrendous situation, retreating into or accepting the despair. Seeing the person get to a point where fantasy is easier than confronting reality. The opening verse is a beautiful and haunting vision into a civilization ending event through that romantic fantasization. It is even reflected in how his lyrics are assertively seeing the black sky as light while the music is, as ixi points out, covered with distortion, dirtied up and flipped upside down chord wise. It all helps describe the personal situation but also paints a picture outside of the narrator.. Trent using music in every way possible to convey meaning, very impressive. This album keeps showing itself as more expressive and cohesive than I could've imagined. Up there with TDS in my opinion and maybe even improving on how he uses sounds and playing with expectations to create atmosphere, emotion and depth that is pushing music to new places..
There’s a live version of this song from 2018 where Trent removed a lot of the noise and got Mike Garson to play piano for the instrumental. I think he also played in A Major, but I could be wrong (my pitch detection isn't the best)
The whole series was amazing, thank you Ixi. I still consider closing concerts with In this twilight + everyone switching off one by one and only that piano as the best ending that could be... (the only better one would be The background world with all lights switched off in total darkness haha) ...and something to analyze - Archive! As always, they're something special but hardly anyone notices it seems? ruclips.net/video/Fh8Ue4Sz3vg/видео.html
I've always loved this track. Your analasis gave me a whole new dimension of appreciation. What an awesome gift to the internet. Thank you for your insightful analysis!
Listening to the verse over several different keys is like someone grabbing a gearshift attached to my brain and yanking it all over the place. Neat! I'm a big fan of the Fennesz version of this from the remix album.
I remember being told "a Hook is when melody, rhythm and intention are all working together". This chorus is a great example of that. One small change and it doesnt sound as good.
Hi ixi! I love your deep dives and breakdowns of NIN albums and songs a lot. Truly remarkable work! 🤍 Now, I wonder if anyone has suggested it to you or if you've had in mind/plan to do an analysis or a deep dive on The Slip by NIN? It feels like this album is rather underrated among NIN fans, for some reason.
We did a listening party of The Slip on my Patreon! There's a replay available: www.patreon.com/posts/56731979 There's some analysis, though I think for a couple tracks we just listened to them together without much chit chat! I don't have immediate plans for that album otherwise but you never know!
After you do your Year Zero thing, can you analyze All Time Low please? It has a lot of similarities as Closer, like a long outro and a funky baseline.
No immediate plans for that one but I agree it resembles Closer! I have a nod to it in this video: ruclips.net/video/zM-6OyRFoCk/видео.html And then a bit more analysis on the Hesitation Marks livestream I did for Patrons: www.patreon.com/posts/53851104
I don't know if you've seen it, but there's a stripped-down live version of In This Twilight from 2018 with Mike Garson: ruclips.net/video/saPSypU2GgU/видео.html
My favorite part of this song has got to be the second chorus, when those high-pitched echoing electronic sounds begin sounding in regular intervals. I've never been entirely sure what those are, but they sound to me a lot like some sort of air raid siren or warning klaxon. It definitely comes off to me like something very ominous is taking place, just within earshot. I feel like it adds so much pathos to the song, to have such a beautiful melody and Trent's calm vocals about coming to terms with the end of the world, and then to actually have that juxtaposed with some auditory hints of the chaos and terror already taking place in the distant background.
A lot of the sounds in this song came from the video game Doom. If you ever get a hold of the stems of "In This Twilight", you can hear the bits and pieces of zombie grunts, etc. I'm not sure WHICH version of Doom, but I'm thinking it was Doom 3.
@@MykeLewisMusic If it was Doom 3 that would make sense, he was supposed to do the full score for that game. So maybe they used some of the stuff that he had made
i often feel like this was the best song on the album and certainly one of the best songs i had ever heard. i wonder why it was never a single yet relations with NIN and universal and the companies that owned them (seagrams) were at an all-time low.

Even Deeper In This Twilight is fucking genius, ixi! Ps. I just became an official official Patreon :)
omg "The Talk".... as if you needed to be any more beautiful and nurturing! :D
this is probably my favorite nin track ever and 2022 really felt like living in the year zero universe
the grunts and 'animal noises' are actually samples for the game 'Doom' this track uses a lot of them :D
Really one-upping Billy Corgan, who sampled Doom a little on Where Boys Fear to Tread
All comes full circle
Video production on this vid was top notch.
That mix at the end.
😗👌 (chef's kiss)
The Becoming is my favorite track off my favorite nin album….but, In This Twilight is my favorite nin song period.
