  • Earlier this year we listened to Year Zero on my Patreon and with their blessing I'm releasing an edited recording of the livestream, song by song! There's some analysis of the melodies/chords/rhythms and soloing of the individual multitracks to hear how all the components fit together to make the final track!

The glottal stops in the verses, the tension, is relieved in the chorus when he says "heyyy". That's when we breathe.

Has anyone else noticed that the opening and groove of this song is exactly the same as Home by Depeche Mode? Now, that would be a pretty cool mashup.

This song is a perfect example of why I love nine jnch nails, and I feel like there are not as many bands that have music layered in such an interesting way. Literally a discovery on every track.

Yeah soloing Year Zero multi-tracks are always such an adventure. it's just like, …how do you layer so many different sounds on top of each other without it sounding like garbage? NIN manages to do this and instead create something sounding incredibly dynamic, and those layers are essential to the way the song sounds-even though those sounds often get obscured in the mix, like ixi was discovering.

I'll never forget hearing this song live in 2007. The live setup for the song was an obvious homage to Kraftwerk, and those green pulsating lights behind the guys was so cool to see.

I think this is a reference to the faction within the lore “Backwards initiative”
And their goal to send information about their dystopia, back in time so their dystopian future can be avoided.
    Was such a cool concept.

"Aayyyeee.." to be sung like a modern day Fonzie... one of my faves, particularly the live version, omg the kinetic stop/slow of his vocal delivery, rappers should be impressed by it, fun to sing along... lazy sinister feel...

I remember when this album came out, the sound design was so revelatory to me, that distorted riff ixi solos in around 18:29 just sounds like ITS ALIVE. I always imagined it as the character going over the edge and turning into a monster, howling while glitching out as its system is overloading. It's also weirdly reminds me of Turntablism scratching , using two vinyls each with weird sound design tracks on them.
The fact that he made something so dynamic and musical yet experimental with Eurorack modular gear is just a testament to how intuitively he picks up electronic music gear and finds the music hidden within. Most people just make weird sound design, ambient, or dance music on Eurorack modular systems, because that's sort of the path of least resistance.

Back when the Year Zero ARG was in full swing, prior to the album's release, individual songs would come out online because the band would put the song on a USB stick and leave it in a bathroom stall or under an overpass or some other insane place and the clues from the game would lead a fan to find it. The fan would upload the song to a fan site, and everyone would hear it then for the first time.
I remember when Me I'm Not came out that way one afternoon, a stripper who was active on the Echoing the Sound message board said she could pick her own music at work, so she danced to this song that very same night, months before the official release.
That really stuck with me, and your comment here about dancing to this track reminded me of it. I always wondered what the people in the strip club would have thought of that music (not that the clientele would necessarily have been doing a lot of thinking).

Regarding the song meaning, if I remember correctly, since this a concept album about an dystopian authoritarian government, and part of that meant forcing the citizen's to take some drug ( I think they even had a name for it), hence the protaganist " swallows it down" and becomes something " he is not."

I thought we might have to call for help ... during that longish listening section, I thought your fluttering eyelids, as you let yourself fall deep into the music, might be indicating an impending seizure. Absolutely LOVE LOVE your amazing passion for the music, and I'm very impressed by your increasingly acute and spot on understanding of rhythm, especially how the elements of a drum set are used in the music you evaluate. I so very much enjoy your videos.

You can tell he's well read on the simulation theory,Plato, Carl Jung, & many of the greatest thinkers & writers. He incorporates a lot of ancient theories into his art. He does it in his own brilliant way. Don't even get me started on "zero sum".
