Becky you are such an inspiration, I would say you are never to old to get outside. I’m 55 and only really discovered the hills and forest about 10 years ago. Love being on my own, sometimes it’s great to have company but always can’t wait for the solo trips. Keep at it and keep on doing what you love. I totally agree, Scotland is off the scale stunning and I never get tired of it. You never just waffle on !! Great energy and vibe!

Travel is great, and it's well worth doing some, but it's also very high-carbon so you have to decide how much/far is reasonable. For example North America does have some amazing wild areas and geology you won't see anywhere else, but, especially for someone in your situation, go there once and do a lot of trips (Alaska, British Columbia, Oregon, California, Utah) in one go, rather than shuttling back and forth, at 4 tonnes of emissions every trip. Buy a van and live out of it for a year or so is probably the best plan. Equally there is an enormous amount to see in Europe, and it gets pretty wild in parts (Picos, Pyrennees, Extremedura, Carpathians, parts of the Alps, and great big chunks of the Balkans, Romania, northern bit of Scandinavia, etc). Most of Europe you can get to on the train with a negligible footprint in comparison to flying about (or driving, especially one-up in a big ICE van). You could spend a lifetime doing all that stuff without actually needing to go to New Zealand. In a couple of decades long-distance travel will be _much_ less of a problem and we can all do some more, but right now it behoves all of us to explore the stuff that's not on the other side of the planet first.
There is some hypocrisy here of course, because I travelled a lot in my youth (NZ, AU, Borneo, US times, quite a lot of Europe), but that's before I realised what a big part of the problem that behaviour is. I have been minimising my travel footprint since 2009 so it was down to about 600Kg for everything last year. The more I look the more amazed I have been at what is relatively close. Thank carefully about whether it makes more sense to do a long hike by train in Romania or Corsica, rather than flying to New Zealand, which is 100Kg (train to Zagreb and back) vs 15 tonnes for Wellington, see ecopassender.org and atmosfair.de) i.e you could go to Zagreb or Bucharest 150 times for the same emissions as one trip to NZ. That's a big deal if you like travel or adventure.

Hi Becky. Once again thank you for sharing your experiences. My old grandfather, long gone, once told me that if we're doing a lot of tramping in the bush, our footwear shouldn't have a rubber base. Your body's natural electrical current should be allowed to complete its cycle by coming in contact with mother earth, not insulated. Your natural fitness is enhanced with this system. That's why leather soles with hobnails or going barefoot aided in our fitness, back in the day. Now arriving at my 76th summer, I still walk around barefoot. And lucky us down here in Nz, we don't have those damn ticks you have up in Uk...and can hike in shorts etc. Or as me and a few like minded mates, both male and female, mixed age, do, as well, is hike as nature intended. Great to listen to the Q+A. Until next time, take care and atb.

I very much admire your attitude to adventure. It reminds me of my younger self, except I never had the confidence to make it a lifestyle, other than leading D of E expeditions when I was a teacher. I did the LEJOG a few years ago, and can empathise with the suffering. When I did it, despite having been a racing cyclist for many years, I had just returned from 2 years living in Malawi. I did it in 6 days, with virtually no training. It was a killer. Especially on the contact areas! One day I'll do it again , over maybe 2 weeks , to enjoy the experience. Keep up the great work.

Great q&a! Alaska must be fantastic. Lived 3 months in Yukon, completely unplanned (got stuck because of mechanical issues in our van + covid). It was tough, I felt quite trapped, which is ironic given the space there, but we couldn't move much. BUT there is no words to describe the beauty and open space. Almost drove to the artic circle but got other mechanical issues haha. Solid plan to live freely. I find it harder and harder as I get older so this is a good reminder.

Great to see you have a goal. I think we can all see you living a natural self-sufficient life in the future especially in these mad times. I worry for mankind in general and it is the self-sufficient who'll survive. I'm certain your/our dependence on technology (YT, wi-fi etc.) will present challenges but also sure you'll find a way. You're well grounded, have self-respect and I'm sure your parents, as we, are very proud of you. I'm also sure you have many admirers abroad and when you visit the USA etc., you'll have many offers of friendship and skill-sharing.
You don't need any advice from me, but I can't help myself saying, never take your health for granted, nurture strength of spirit, be safe, be kind and be you Becks.
Try reading/listening to Desiderata (it's on YT).
"You are a child of the Universe,
You have a right to be here
And whether or not it is clear to you
No doubt the Universe is unfolding
    As it should"
Also, your recognition of stopping and looking and appreciating the moment is so true and reminds me of a beautiful song by Emmett Franz (of The Petersens) called 'Moments' it's inspired by a true story about a guy who went off into the wild, he wrote in his diary that things are better shared with loved ones basically.
Although it's (spoiler alert) a sad song its lyrics are profound, touching and wise.
"Read to me, of wanderers and whims
Of a man who travelled over mountains grim
    And the voices calling him"
    ruclips.net/video/PBLSzetYYWs/видео.html The song.
Thank you so much Becks for sharing your time with us. Although it's a shame to see the behaviour of SOME youngsters today, It's great to see your skills and confidence develop. 🙂

I missed out on the question and answer because I have been so busy and have missed quite a few videos but I love the way this channel has developed in the last couple of years ... I think that is about how long I have been watching.
I have never seen the barefoot shoes before and they really intrigue me. About 6 years ago I had a serious problem with plantar fasciitis. My way out was by limited but very regular exercise, initially about 30 to 45 minutes, walking one day and cycling the next and walking on soft peaty ground in the Dark Peak at the weekends because I was living in South Yorkshire at the time. It worked but I am convinced that the barefoot shoes would have improved the strength of the arches in my feet and my lower legs in much less time than the many months it actually took me.
I do pretty much the same as you when I am on the road. I edit my photos on a laptop sat in the back of my car, then upload to a tablet and find a cafe or a pub somewhere. I even have a little folding table which folds out of the front passenger seat of my car to put my laptop on.
Don't tell anyone where your woodland is! I am just as curious as anyone, but you are entitled to your personal privacy and there are a lot of unpleasant people hiding out there in cyberworld.

You've done Great and could teach survival skills, i took over 7 years to become a Black belt in Shotokan karate which taught me to never give up the mind is the key. Do you play Guitar Becky? You could take an accoustic with you to relax, just a thought

I have those same shoes. I like them a lot but I prefer my Five Fingers for hiking because I get better toe articulation. I switched to barefoot shoes 12 years ago and never looked back. Cheers from southern Arizona.

Love the hat. I can't get the bare foot thing? I am writing this wearing steel toe rigger boots, if you ride a motorbike or spend a lot of time using chainsaws or big power tools then you cannot live in those floppy bare foot boots or shoes. Yes my feet are fu*ked from years or wearing big heavy boots but at least I have feet, saw a sandal wearing hippy walk into my mates machine shop & within 30 seconds lost a toe.
I have been thinking maybe I will get some bare foot shoes just to wear in my down time around the house, maybe it will help?
Keep up the awesome free living outdoor life.

Great to see your feet again, they do appreciate the naked exposure and non-photo shop approach. They are spokes toes for the rest of us to look down and say Thanks for the wonderful Hike, Climb, Bike, and Run.
Question : Could you make or bring a Bird Feeder to your private get-a-away would be cool to see them flitting about during your time at Base Camp ? See you in your next You-Tube Footage. Cheers!

Hi Becky, another enjoyable video, keep up the good work. My 11 year old daughter loves the outdoors camping, walking , cycling, paddle boarding & bush craft you name she loves it. she also thinks you're amazing. Have you ever thought about running small group session or small expeditions for young girls? your such a inspirational positive young lady you can have a massive effect on young girls (rather than a plastic tiktoker). If you did she would sign up in a heart beat.

... Live happy chase those desires and dreams while you have the strength and freedom to do so .... there may come a time that you tell yourself it's enough ... once a foundation is set there will be other avenues to persue ,,such as writing and teaching the new young adventurers ... once a permanent homebase is established it's much more difficult to get away .. responsibilities get in the way ...
    .... Stay Safe ...
