This is a mesmerizing piece. I would like to hear from the composer-Why the choice of instruments? What is the significance of some of the "sounds" that are played.
Thank you John! The composer, Carlos Carrillo, was inspired by a poem (see video description) with the same title. Each one of the four racks has nine graduated-pitch instruments made of a different material or "element" representing each of the four walls.
Love this video, thank you. I'm curious how long you have to practise a piece before you're ready to film it and do you always manage to play / record the whole piece on the first attempt?
Thanks Simon! The ensemble only had a handful of rehearsals with this piece, along with two live concerts before filming. It always changes, but for this piece we filmed three complete takes. You're seeing the third of those attempts in its entirety. The other two performances were great as well, but this one was the consensus favorite.
Thanks@@thirdcoastpercussion , really interesting to learn more about the process and work that goes into these videos. Please come and perform in the UK!
I cant describe how much I love this.
Absolutely captivating! Man, percussion is just the best.

Amazing! What made you think of using clay pots? I had no idea they made such a wonderful sound.
Thanks for watching! Carlos Carrillo, the composer of this piece, called for the graduated clay pots in his score. They really do sound wonderful!
