  • We take you along on a short day trip to our favorite city in Puglia, Italy.
    Rarely visited by international tourists, an authentic and wonderful destination for travelers to visit.
    There is much more to this city than we could fit into this video so we will try to make a part two in the near future
    Enjoy
    Ebonie and Martin

Fine.

      Yes we definitely agree, sadly a lot of wonderful places in Italy and many other countries have their underlying issues. We hope to show the beauty of these places and the spirit of the people who are often up against many challenges. The best we can do is support them and show the beauty that visitors might be able to experience if they open their eyes to different perspectives.

      So for example in Taranto. Many people are not interested in visiting Taranto as they think it’s polluted by the large steel industry that operates there but it was in fact taken over by the state back in 2012 and they have done many improvements to the city and the environment in the area to clean up the mess that company caused, even protecting the marine areas for the local dolphin habitat etc but still the stigma remains so it is over looked by tourists and visitors and not promoted as a town locally that’s worth visiting. It’s a wonderful place and beautiful with great people, in my opinion the locals of Taranto do not deserve to be punished for a massive corrupt corporation polluting their area, they need tourism money to help their local economy while many other cities like Ostuni, Alberobello, Polignano a mare are already full of tourists and the cities are half as interesting and not authentic at all.

      Because is not touristy and on top of that Taranto is an important industrial hub (it has one of the biggest steel factories in Europe), hence, there are ongoing environmental issues that affect certain areas and their people (the Tamburi quarter is the main example). Is not all as bad as they say, but it is something to take into account.

      I would say the biggest issue is there have been environmental issues due to the steel works over the years, the state took control over it back in 2012 and have apparently been making an big effort to make it more sustainable. You wouldn’t know it to walk around the city but I’m sure it has effected some people of Taranto. Also a lot of money has been spent promoting cities like Bari, Lecce and Ostuni for example to international tourists while Taranto has largely been left out probably due to the steel works controversy. We personally love the city , it’s the perfect mix of old, new and gritty and clean and the people are so friendly. I don’t see why they should be punished for a large corporation moving in and being harmful to their community.
      Highly recommend visiting to see for yourself :)

    English is probably not wildly spoken in the region. Do you have to speak Italian to visit Puglia?

    • @Maisondebase
      @Maisondebase  8 месяцев назад

      To be honest it’s not really widely spoken in most areas the more touristy places definitely you can find English speaking but for living and day to day life you definitely need Italian if you were to move here otherwise it can be challenging but you always find a way until you learn and Italians are very friendly ☺️ for a holiday you can most certainly manage no problem with google translate

    I agree with you 100%, the most interesting city in Puglia with such amazing potential. Hopefully it won't become overly touristified as it becomes slowly gentrified. The old centro storico is incredible! You didn't mention the Greeks in your historical intro to the city. It was of course their capital city of Magna Grecia.

      There were Greek settlers who came when Rome was established. The foundations of nearly every city in Italy is mostly Roman this is even the case for Austria where Vienna was founded by Romans. I love Italy.

      What I especially liked watching your video was the absence of the Marochini and scammers on the streets. It’s seems to be an Italy less travelled (which I love).

    Favorite city in Puglia : Taranto😱Is this a joke? Taranto is a very polluted city ! You should read what's happening with the steel company ILVA...

    • @Maisondebase
      @Maisondebase  10 месяцев назад

      Yes we know all about the ILVA steel works and yes it’s very sad that there are environmental issues regarding that but it certainly doesn’t detract from the fact that Taranto is a wonderful, charming and interesting city with friendly locals and interesting sites and history, it’s not yet over taken by the likes of mass tourism like many other villages in Puglia. If you think an area and it’s people deserve to be judge based on corporate corruption that is very sad. Would you say that about Naples or Milan if someone said they liked it? Would you say that because it has crime and mafia and rubbish it isn’t an incredible city? Think about what you are saying because your view is very 1 dimensional, but you don’t have to like it that’s up to you. 🙂

      IF the city's water was "unsafe" to drink and riddled with mafioso or other crime, I'd MOST CERTAINLY say it's "unsafe".
      I noticed you recently sold your place. Any association with the issues above?

      This is a friendly but serious note with the best intentions to those who wish to go there. As noted elsewhere in this thread, Taranto is one of the most polluted towns in Southern Europe and there's a reason "it’s not yet over taken by the likes of mass tourism." This unfortunate reality shouldn't detract from what is otherwise charming about Taranto, but if you suffer from asthma or other respiratory maladies, you might be best advised to stay away from this area. As an Italian citizen and resident of Puglia, I say this with respect and hope that the city can one day be cleaner.
