“Abide with Me” is an old Christian song written by Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847) shortly before he died of tuberculosis. It was sung for the first time at his funeral and has been sung countless times in the 177 years since then.
The title and theme of this hymn were taken from Luke 24:29, when those who walked with Christ on the road to Emmaus said, “Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.”
