  • This is how I make my own canvas panels at home. These canvas boards are my favorite surface to paint on and probably one of the most archival and durable surfaces for oil or acrylic painting.

    One suggestion i have tried pure raw linen fabric (one for clothing) 20$/mtr. done all same thing as shown up till gluing, it sticks perfectly smooth.
    Then after it dried i mix marine grade synthetic glue (gac 100 can b used) with some gesso and thin out its consistency like a syrup and applied 2 thin layers before applying proper gesso. It works 100% equal to Belgian linen canvas which is like 1000 usd 10mtr roll😂

    I use hardboard glued to a stretcher frame, but i dont used pva to stick the canvas. I've found a few coats of gesso tightens it after it's been stapled.

    Why not just stretch the canvas and staple it to the side? That way, if you have to remove the canvas you can. Nice video

    Just what I was looking for, as far as how to make your own large canvas panel, however, I don't see how it would be archival to mount directly on masonite, without sealing it first with something that would block the masonite from the canvas. Thoughts?

    hi chuck
    Do you know what I should look for in the right canvas? The brand you use is not available in the Netherlands. But there are plenty of alternatives and offerings and that is precisely what makes it confusing. Should I use cotton or linen for oil painting? Maybe you know an alternative? Greetings David

    Hi Chuck
    Is it true that you are not using gesso for the larger panel in this video?
    In the other videos you do use gesso and you recommend it. Is it true that this canvas (Fredrix Style 574 Knickerbocker Acrylic Primed Cotton Canvas Rolls) has already been pre-treated with gesso and you only need to glue the canvas to a wooden panel?
    Is there perhaps another brand you can recommend for the European market? The brand fredrix knickerbocker is only available in America and I am from Europe
    Thanks have a nice day

    • @chuckblackart
      @chuckblackart  Год назад

      I do add extra gesso to these to smooth them out more. Hm, that's frustrating to know.. I honestly don't know what is available in Europe for canvas. Where do you order art supplies typically? I would look for canvas intended for portraits or even linen if you're looking for a smoother surface

      Hi Chuck
      Is it possible to paint directly on an MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard) plate pre-treated with gesso? Maybe you have experience with that and get the same results with it

    А я покрываю оргалит двумя слоями смеси: клей ПВА + акриловая строительная краска и рисую прямо на нем, без холста. Получается не хуже и можно не бояться, что холст отклеится.

    Thats a lot of work. How is that better than a stretched canvas?

    • @chuckblackart
      @chuckblackart  2 года назад

      It's more rigid and durable which makes it easier to preserve longevity of the painting. If I was to go bigger, I would go with stretched for weight and size purposes

    isnt the benefit of a canvas on a frame that you can take it off in case the wood bends/get damaged over time and doesnt that procedure neglect that benefit?

    • @chuckblackart
      @chuckblackart  2 года назад +2

      There's advantages to both for sure. The disadvantage to stretched is that the surface is flexible which increases the risks of wear or worse be poked or cut. The glue is water soluble and the canvas could be removed if one had to. Also I make sure the construction is solid and would not be at risk of warping.
