The mechazilla is on the ship because SpaceX looks at the ship as booster and ship. Not just ship. So it's on the top of the complete rocket. It's one thing to them. If ship was full orbital on IFT-5 I might guess they might attempt a ship catch as well. But it is not. So that's my best explanation.
Dang - a TON of work being done! Impressive. The engineering behind all this is insane. You can see that there's lots of folks doing their homework, changing here, adding there, lots and lots of changes.
Side note: Solar panels have become so cheap, they’ve become cheaper fencing than fencing wood. I’ve heard of people buying some as a fence, and extracting what solar power they can from them.
In his defense, he's never held a hammer or done an oil change like most wanna be men these days, so he had no clue whether that was a wall panel or toilet paper.
The test movements after the chopsticks work might also be inertia calibrations for the catch control algorithms because of the added mass from the weld plates.
Great update as usual. I must admit that over the last couple years I’ve felt like I’m watching a science fiction movie play out in reality. We are experiencing something that was considered completely impossible only a few years ago. I’m just grateful to be alive to witness this moment in human history.
Using the serial numbers to confirm that the recently spotted Raptors are still Raptor 2 and not Raptor 3? Given how on top of everything Starship-related you NSF folks are I'm thinking that was some very dry and deadpan humour from Jack because based on the photos we've seen so far of Raptor 3 you certainly don't need to check serial numbers to spot the difference! I am so looking forward to the first Raptor 3 being spotted at Starbase. That design looks so amazing.
@julianfp1952 I doubt all v2 Raptors are built to an identical design. So I assumed they just meant they don't expect there's much difference between today's batch and recent batches - even within the constrained scope of the Raptor 2 family.
Jack, I would love to see an in depth video on the supporting logistics for the incredibly fast and constant progress at Starbase. There is an EPIC amount of planning and scheduling going on behind the scenes. This kind of progress doesn't happen unsupported. Love the great job you all do for us. Thank you!!
Mechazilla spits fire! The decal is positioned on Starship in the spot where the plasma burned through the flap!!! Watching the reentry this time will have an added element of entertainment.🤣🤣🤣
Oh, looks like I apparently got a membership gift! Thank you so much to whoever it was, very much appreciated! Now, I can watch Starbase Updates a day earlier for a month!
Yes it's a great gift to receive. I got a few, that I enjoyed, but now I can afford to pay my own way. It has taken me 3 years but you can support NSF just by watching 30 seconds of an ad and of course giving a 👍🏼. Welcome to the club.
what a fantastic report, so much happened this time, love the coverage in a fast and digestible format which took 15 min anyway because there was so much
Kudos NSF team. Great update. Super curious about the coating applied to Starbase towers. My hunch is they use a thermal spray metallizing process to coat the steel with zinc. By far the most robust and effective anti-corrosion treatment for marine environments.
Seems like it would be pretty easy to string a couple of cables between the towers and catch the booster that way. Even if you only caught one pin it would hang there like a piece of laundry.... Sincerely, armchair engineer
Odd? I either didn't realize or have forgotten just how close Boca Chica Village is to the production site. Thought it was several miles away 13:56 Once again, thanks Jack and team NSF for the latest SBU!
thank you Jack and NSF team for the fantastic updates. SpaceX team must apply decals on the booster as well. Booster is going to be the star of the show in few weeks time.
HAHA lol love the shirt. Don Hertzefeldt is such an OG of the internet. I remember watching his videos 25 years ago on the internet. I am a banana. Silly hats only. Great video, and shirt!
I feel like Iaunch date of IFT5 will be similar to IFT2. Just like back then there is so much work that is needed before it launches. There is still pad work to do be and also work on the catch arms, then they also still have to do a WDR and let's not forget that the FAA is also willing to take there time. Maybe we won't have to wait until mid-November, but a September launch seems unlikely.
They are no where close to trying that. The last flight had the ship several miles/km off course for the landing. Not a risk there as it was over the exclusion zone. But far, far too risky nearby populated areas and Starbase. Maybe they will attempt it sometime late next year.
Thanks for A Great CatchUp on Expansion s at the BASE! A great thorough inclusion of all changes made. Perhaps they are just going to catch ship on New launch 🚀 pad;as SPACEX have a tendency to surprise at times. If as u say Sep/Oct then maybe it’s ready for a surprise ship catch. At least they won’t have to wait for a FAA clearance since they pissed SPACEX must bail their hero’s Boeing out of shit. Thanks 😊 for a great show Jack.
Tower 2 has a lot of piping and conduits for electrical work. Low quality electrical connections have lots of connections along it's length, while high quality requires a constant run from source to final device. This is even more important for data cabling.
Absolutely love what spacex is doing. Can anyone say why all of those massive flat roofs are not covered in solar panels? They seem like the ideal place to get some free energy for starbase.
Thanks for the update, and the Don Hertzfeldt T-shirt! Just ordered his new Blu-Ray. I tried buying a Starship and Booster at the same time, but my card was declined for that transaction...
Not necessary because of the fine adjustments will be made by the booster. Since it can hoover unlike the Falcon 9 it can compensate as necessary. It may fail completely, but at least it will be entertaining.
FYI - The diagonal structural elements mentioned at 13:12 are not for distributing the weight of the segment, they’re lateral bracing to enhance stiffness of the entire tower and protect against seismic events.
Did you watch This Week In Spaceflight?

Well, maybe they are planning to catch a ship😮

Stacking for full wet dress.
Really liking those "look here" arrows moving around in the nosecone shots, etc...
14:03 "After the Two Towers, when is the Return of the Methane King?"... groan... ok, that was smooth.
Blame adrian
@@JackABeyerI take that blame every day!
Adrian and Jack - the comedic duo of Boca Chica! 😂😂😂
Except it's the third tower....why does everyone forget the one in Florida? Still as a Tolken fan I appreaciate the reference
@@MrGoesBoom because there are only two towers at Star Base
The cross segment rigging was really clever on that last piece
Thanks for the updates. I should be used to it by now but I still can’t believe how fast things happen there.
Dang - a TON of work being done! Impressive. The engineering behind all this is insane. You can see that there's lots of folks doing their homework, changing here, adding there, lots and lots of changes.
Another week or two of work then "Go for catch attempt!"
They are like 10 years behind promised and tax money is being spent in insane levels.

11:39 minute mark, that's walkway/flooring...never seen it used for walls. Cheers 🤠
Indeed, walkway grating!

Place gyro wheels on chopstick arms, for better control of the swing.

Good work guys! Nice to see Jack back too.
Great video Jack, Awesome videos Mary,, Thank you, & thank you NSF!
Those back-and-forth ship transportations made me laugh out loud.😂😂😂
Thanks for your awesome updates on the star ship, Jack. The way you deliver is crystal clear.
Jack and Das are the only two I can watch in these NSF videos. I wish they would do more of them.

The rat’s nest of tubing and wiring on the engines are a clear giveaway of Raptor 2 provenance.

Wow, Don Hertzfeldt animations. There's a blast from the past!

another great Starbase update!
Hey come on S26 has feelings too, Besides that another great Video
Jack - Much better job with the commentary. Your confidence is definitely improving and so is your presentations.
@Jack & @Alex at the 11:40 (mm:ss) mark those are not wall panels those are floor grates.😊
Thanks for the update guys. Can't wait to see the catch.

Great update. I reckon the Mechazilla decal has also been installed on B12 - we just haven't seen it yet :)
@NASASpaceFlight Great job as usual, keep up the fantastic work!
Amazing update as always!
Just two towers being excellent to each other
Brilliant to see you back Jack 😊...Great update ☺️🚀 Thank you
Nice job Jack. Love the word play. Keep it light and humorous.
I think the sticker just signifies the mission of the ship, not that the ship itself will be caught. Now I need that sticker!!!!!
Jack you are the king of the updates (love the hats-available on the store?) Thanks, NSF!!
It’s such a beautiful day! Love the shirt.
Thanks for the great update as always, Team NSF! 👍
Aaaaaand here we go!!!!!!!
Hi Sweet Jack thank very much❤ Great work
Thank you! Great summary!!!
Is Mechazilla facing the nearly burned-thru flap trying to scare off that nasty old reentry plasma?

Yeah
Flight 7 could be the real bugger if Raptor 3 engines are required! They might need Ship 32 and some Raptor 2’s as a stopgap.
Another great update thank you!
Thank you for the great show!
8:10 "1 2 3 4 5 6 ahahah"

Onward and Upward SpaceX 🚀
True, Ship is going to bottom of the ocean, but the decal is on Ship because that's the view we're going to see during flight (hopefully).
5:36 you meant "universaly loved ship 26"
I think the plumbing rather than the S/N is a more obvious indication those were V2 raptors. 😮

Rather than saying "test tank 16" we should just say it's T16, kinda like S30 and B12
Oh good call
I'm a big fan but... Ship 26 is NOT universally hated. Please don't speak for us!
I prefer the golf announcer style rather than canned excitement
Boost the speed of the catcher befor you catch the booster.
Not necessary because of the fine adjustments will be made by the booster. Since it can hoover unlike the Falcon 9 it can compensate as necessary. It may fail completely, but at least it will be entertaining.

Surely it’s time for NSF to ask spaceX to put a camera on top of tower 2 🤣🤣
Love it.
Only reason im still subscribed is for the launches. IT WOUKD BE SO NICE JUST TO HAVE A LAUNCH CHANNEL.
Raptor V3 1 is first that's manufactured after testing the model, not the first to be tested or prototyped.
I wouldn't be surprised to see the first batch of Raptor 3s delivered for integration in September.
The person in charge of the decals catches so much flak.
