    A final tip now that I've watched the entirety of the video. If shooting using a telephoto lens and your subject is a mile away then there is no need to shoot at f11. Shoot at f5.6 (or whatever is available) and get a faster shutter speed.

    I love your cheeky tongue-in-cheek admiration for the utility poles but, as a one time lineman, I do genuinely admire a well installed and sited pole. So much skill in erecting a 30 or 40 foot pole in a remote hill site and getting it vertical and stable against both the elements and the weight of those cables. Yes, it’s a niche taste but every craft should be appreciated by someone! 😊

    Top tip for handheld photography @ 8:07. Go old school! Cup the lens in your left hand and support the camera that way with your elbow against your chest. All the right hand does is press the shutter. Also, use the sniper technique. Breath out, then press the shutter.

      Agree 101% ... Also, if possible spread your feet about a meter or more apart, 45 degrees to the shot. If you can brace your knee against something (rock, etc.), so much the better.

    Dont be scared of high iso with modern cameras .. Set the apeture and shutter speed you want and let the camera wack up the iso if it wants to ..... Anyway , I dont like photos that are sharper than the eye can see ...softer images are far nicer imo..... 👍😎

    For me, the Nikon Z lenses we have are sharpest at 5.6 to 8. So that's what I shoot at. If there's foreground, I just photo stack. I get a lot of comments asking how I get my images so sharp. For my drone, I shoot generally at f2.8, not sure what you shoot at.

    Would there be any advantage to use the 2 sec timer when handheld, that way you wouldnt have to press the shutter button when the actual shot was taken so you could concentrate more on holding and keeping still.

    One tip if using a tripod on a windy day is to use the hook at the bottom of the tripod to attach a weight....such as your backpack. Don't have it swinging in the wind though. I have a mini (6") bungee cord which I use to hook on the bag and the other end is hooked onto the hook of the tripod column. The bag then sits on the ground and doesn't swing. I also have a 'stone' bag that can be left attached to the tripod legs - even when folded - and the tripod weighted down that way.

    I like your no-nonsense approach to photography, Henry, but one thing does raise an eyebrow: What do you think Analogue photographers did when their images were slightly 'soft' ? They bracketed. Admittedly, I use DSLR's as well as Analogue gear, but what's the point in "sharpening" an image that, if you're competent enough to make in the first instance, requires any more enhancement ? It's either going to be well executed or it isn't. De facto. It (also) in my opinion, detracts from what can be perceived as your own work because you're using yet another tool - "AI" is not your 'intelligence' at work, it's bolstering up your mistakes - better to make such errors from which you can learn, rather than blithely plough thru' your chosen career. Perfection is nigh-on impossible to achieve, but by aspiring to that goal, does that not spur you on to fulfil such achievement ? Beautiful scenery you're in - I've walked that area many times & it never fails to captivate my imagination.
    Wishing you & yours a peaceful Christmas !
    Andrew.

    Henry you are really spoiling us with a video a day much like an apple a day!! My wife has a forensic eye and 'used to' always say 'that's not in focus'..... so I've really concentrated on this aspect of my photography. So nervous was I that I've found myself always using the viewfinder [saves battery on my 80D] but unconsciously, initially at least, holding my breath when taking pics and it really seems to have made a difference, so very sound advice. Good luck and stay safe in the snow which unfortunately we don't have down here in Cheltenhamshire.

    You little devil you saved the best till last what a lovely image, good advice regards the using of a Tripod, regardless of Faffing around on some occasions Its well worth it for pin sharp Images, use Focus Peaking if your make of camera supports it and don't forget if you want a Pin sharp image back to front make sure the preview lights up completely not just one part of the image otherwise it won't be sharp all over, lovely Video by the way, Colin.

    Tip 2, take a deep breath and slowly press the button, taking a deep breath will cause you to make 'movements' because your heart beat will come into play and cause vibration that will affect your camera. Yes, take a deep breath, but exhale 50% then hold and take the shot. This is the technique used by snipers so the heart doesn't affect the bullet when firing :)

    Some great tips here for sharpness, good vid HT 👊🙏❤ another useful tip for hand held photography to keep your photos sharp is the reciprocal rule: your shutter speed should be at least "1" over your lens focal length, so if shooting a 50mm going with a shutter speed at least 1/50s, 200mm lens would be a shutter speed of 1/200s etc This rule is for full frame so you would need to adjust with crop sensors for the effective focal length.

    • @photoferretuk1787
      @photoferretuk1787 10 месяцев назад +1

      Sure. Although and XT4, say, has 6 stop of IBIS, so one can definitely drop it a lot lower. Can manage hand held at about 1/8" with this.

    • @bazanderson8283
      @bazanderson8283 10 месяцев назад

      @@photoferretuk1787 yeah, the above applies to lens/bodies with no image stabilization so if you have that you can go lower

  • @glennn.3464
    @glennn.3464 10 месяцев назад

    I agree that higher shutter speeds when possible are the way to go as long as you don’t feel you’re compromising your preferred aperture or ISO too much. But...the rule of twice the focal length used to apply to the time before image stabilization. With IBIS or optical stabilization, or both working together sometimes, you can safely go much slower and get sharp photos especially, as you stated in your video, if you fire off a burst at the camera’s high frame rate to increase the likelihood of getting a very sharp one. On my Nikon Z8 I can handhold 600mm at 1/60 and get sharp results consistently if I make the effort to stabilize myself and even lower if needed. And I hear the Nikon Z f has incredible image stabilization that I hope comes to all future Nikon cameras.

    Great stuff Henry. Btw, I’ve just bought an OM-5 and I love it already!
    Anyway, the obvious thing after your belt and braces, is to check the image after you’ve taken it. It’s so obvious I feel a bit daft mentioning it, but there are so many things that can go wrong, like kicking the tripod or even moving if eg you’re on moss or peat or even a wooden bridge.

    Enjoying your series of Advent videos, great tips Henry all good advice, personally I don't rely on auto focus but manually focus and use the playback image to get it fine tuned.
    Additionally if you are using the shutter button on the camera when its on the tripod it might be worth using shutter delay in the menu, a couple of seconds delay can allow for the vibration caused when pressing it. DSLR cameras can possibly suffer from vibration when the mirror is retracted, remove a strap or anything dangling on the camera.
    The past eight months of sunsets have most often been exactly as your experience, bright sunshine 10 minutes before and then a thick bank of cloud on the horizon, (hoping for a small gap underneath to allow some colour to bleed through from the bottom )

    some good tips there Henry. As I use tilt shift lenses in my architecture work then the live view zoomed in is a habit that is ingrained into my workflow so even when I use zoom lenses, I still do that final check by zooming in live view. Another couple of considerations is turning off autofocus when taking a pano and that ensures you have the same focus locked in and on a windy day, consider the use of Image Stabilisation (dependant on IS being a feature in your gear and also the length of exposure). Lovely images today, especially that final image and that mono image, that was a stunner
