  • On April 11th 2023, the Chicago Blackhawks took on the Pittsburgh Penguins in each team's penultimate game of the 22-23 NHL season, and while this late-season contest seemed like a routine affair, the result of this game and the ripple it would cause across the league meant that this seemingly meaningless match would change the course of the league for many years to come.
This is the story of the game that changed the National Hockey League...

At the time of the game I was watching to see which non playoff team would play spoiler, it happens every year. Oddly, that game really stood out with all the draft and play off ramifications...just didn't piece it all together as well as you did...thanks.

2 goals in under 30 seconds that screwed the Bruins in the playoffs yet again if you think about it 🙃

@@johnclaudevondon5333 I guess he thought that the bruins would be able to beat the penguins if they were the ones to make the playoffs and not the panthers. If it’s something else then I’m not really sure.

This is the fallacy of the predetermined outcome. Anything could have changed to get a different draft result after this game.
Instead the disgusting groomer Blackhawks get rewarded with the first overall pick when they should have lost their first round pick the way Arizona did for much less.

If Pittsburgh makes it to the playoffs, the Bruins play the Maple Leafs in round two, and the winner of that probably makes it to the Finals. As soft as the Bruins ultimately proved to be in postseason play, the Pens were much softer and probably would have been swept in the first round. It was for the best that the Panthers advanced onto the playoff grid, especially if you like chaos.

I blame Edmonton for the NHL having a lottery for the #1 draft pick

Actually you can blame Pittsburgh and New Jersey who both tanked in 1984 to try and get Lemieux. They both went to extreme lenghts to finish last and it caused the NHL to consider an NHL lottery, which would be implemented in 1995.

Pittsburgh would have lost on round 1 and Burke and Hextall still would have been fired. The Panthers were a good team that almost missed the playoffs and the Penguins were a bad team that almost made the playoffs.
Jarry and Crosby carried the team for the first half of the season, which is the only reason they were in a position to even make the playoffs. They were poorly constructed team. Hextall managed the cap so poorly that they couldn't even bring injured players back when they were healthy. He topped it off with the worst trade at the trade deadline in the league by bringing in Granlund.

As an isles fan I cannot tell u how happy I was when Chicago beat Pittsburgh. Isles played the night before and could've clinched a playoff against a poor capitals team and they blew that game. Seeing how Pittsburgh had the easier schedule made me lose all hope. But then this happened, and isles fans everywhere felt more positive. The players themselves the following day said the same thing. Zach Parise said it best how they felt they were given a 2nd chance and they weren't gonna squander it. They beat Montreal that night and were able to get in the playoffs after all
