As a registered veterinary technician who handles feral domestic dogs and wildlife, I appreciate you learning how to use a tranq gun. A lot of people don’t understand how using IM sedation via tranq gun is keeping so many people from being hurt, and the wolves as well. It seems a decent number of people think they are learning this in case the wolves escape, which is false. Sure, it would be useful in that scenario, but they are doing this primarily so they can sedate the wolves for vet visits. Maya's apprehension and saying that "I will practice but I'm never doing that to an animal" is saying that in this typical case of why they would be using the tranquilizer gun, she does not intend to be the one using it. There are plenty of staff at Alveus who can do it instead. Connor's imaginary scenario of her being the only one there when a tiger escapes was simply to illustrate that there is use in learning how to use it, even if she never intends to be the one using it on an animal. 100% agree with you. They also were super open on the fact that the wolves were a happy, although hurried surprise. Staff was trained, an insane enclosure was built, but it's absolutely normal for everyone, even Maya, to be uncomfortable and pressured while learning this type of stuff in such a small period of time.
They're wild animals, not pets. Being proficient and able with a dart gun is part of the job and responsible management. Everyone on staff has to be prepared to do what is necessary at any point in time because you simply cannot rely on "well, someone else will take care of it."
@@bchin4005 There's a huge medical risk, and as someone who works professionally with animals, not everyone who works with animals is willing to take that on. We're certainly trained to do a lot of stuff, but with something like this, there's a lot of pressure. Where I live, in my field, people are able to get EU (euthanasia) certified if they desire. Do I plan on it? Helllll no. So much can go wrong that causes a lot of suffering for the animal. I often don't know these animals, have no attachment, but I want nothing to do with that pressure. Sedating an animal - even just through regular injections, and not a dart gun like this - is often incredibly risky. And here it's much harder to know if you're going to hit something you shouldn't. But she's perfectly willing to carry a handgun and shoot humans, if necessary. There's some cognitive dissonance going on here. I have to exercise all of them, every time, all of the time. 4:52 she makes it crystal clear that that's exactly what she's doing, and it sends a bad message. They were loved and comforted through all the blood draws and shots. I never doubted for a second that their well-being was top priority
As a long time watcher, this is the content that fascinates me. Especially about conservation, like how do I take measurements and samples of an animal, oh I need to dart them.....oh wait how do i do that correctly...
It's actually proven that by giving a voice to our fears and apprehension, it allows up to process scary and traumatizing situations better and gives us a better chance at being able to tolerate them when we have to face them in the future. i dont think fentanyl is absorbed thru skin enough to worry about such minimal exposure (in his hypothetical). it was disproven that cops were lying (what else is new?) when they said they were in crazy wild danger from exposure.
They were literally just having panic attacks lmao. And yeah, fentanyl is literally used medically so it's nowhere near the level of death liquid it's widely believed to be
Yeah… the people who have actually OD from it aren’t really able to tell you how wrong you are about the opioid on steroids designed to work like crack
Less than a minute for Connor to shoot air at Maya. Literally clicked just to see how long it would take and was not disappointed lol. But in all seriousness, if it came down to it, pretty sure that Maya would do what was necessary in an emergency situation.
are the targets muscle analogous? cuz im pretty sure that just styrene or sth so dont take the pressures needed there and apply it to a squishy fleshy animal go low
They needed it to stick to make sure the pressure and everything was right in the dart itself. If it doesnt stick they cant tell if that was done correctly
ITS FENTANYL??? I took that for years for a long term illness, its so dangerous I wouldn't even go near it again. We were camping once and it was around 90 degrees even in the tent and the heat was enough that it started absorbing WAY more medicine through the patch than was meant to (this is why they warn about heated blankets), I couldn't even move enough to get off the ground or call for help I had to call my dad who was literally sitting right in front of the tent, and he couldn't even understand me cause i was whispering. Fortunately he came over to check and was able to bring ice from the coller to put on it and get water for me (which I could not actually sit up and swallow for about 15 minutes). Youd be fine from just accidentally touching a bit (though definitely wash your hands anyway), but if the needle actually goes in you need to get treatment IMMEDIATELY. Id ask your primary care doc to prescribe naloxone nasal sprays, thats what paramedics carry to reverse opioid overdoses, and yes it can be used on pets if they get into it too, iust have someone spray it right in their nose. Unfortunately my pediatric pain dr was really bad, and didn't bothwr telling me naloxone/naltrexone existed. My current pain dr was appalled.
no its not fentanyl, but if they were dealing with large ungulates like deer or moose then it would be needed. They were using saline for practice and will be using a different sedative for thr wolves
Which is ironic, considering darts are used to help animals. Far more inhumane to not use it when an animal is having issues that can be solved by medication.

lol are you gonna pull out a calculator to convert yards to meters while an animal is raging? “Hold tight Jimmy, that wolf eating your arm will be asleep in 10 minutes” 😅
Yep. You can't have large animals, such as wolf-hyrbids, if you're not willing to put them down. Cowardice solves nothing here, especially, if you're taking on the role of "executive director".
@janaparks929 yes, there are, but they take a long time to give any pain relief or have any effect. They also contain a liquid that helps the fent to be absorbed through your skin and have any sort of bioavailability. Simply touching it alone won't do anything. The idea that skin contact can kill or cause you to OD is a myth spread by cops to cover for their coworkers trying products from the evidence locker.
The propaganda is seriously everywhere. Reposting my other comment: Medicine patches usually use other chemicals that facilitate the transfer through the skin. That being said, even if fentanyl and carfentanil don't easily absorb through the skin, it never hurts to be safe and keep narcan on you. Touching eyes, nose or mouth after exposure can still cause problems. On top of that, dealing with liquid forms of any drug can make things a little more tricky than the stuff that cops have panic attacks over.
What is it with so many people in the comments all of sudden becoming animal, psychology, firearm, and dart gun experts? They're practicing for a reason.
Maya is great but shes the owner so she really should know how to do this and be willing to try to learn because ultimately all the animals are her responsibility. this video was honestly disappointing. sometimes you have to step up even if you're uncomfortable because then why get the wolves to begin with if your only willing to learn certain aspects of their care and saftey. This is so important to know because of staff, animal and public saftey. And my main issue was the comment of her never doing this even when connor said you need to know if you are the only one here and he is absolutely correct. If someone gets hurt or something terrible happens shes the one whoes responsible. I know connor is trying but maybe get an instructor on site to train you if you arent sure...
100% correct. Her cowardice solves nothing. It's also very irresponsible as the executive director of the sanctuary. If you own large animals, especially predators, you're of legal obligation to public safety should they get loose. This includes potentially putting them down. A dart gun is a lot better than other options, though, less lethal rounds containing pepper solutions sounds plausible, too, but she's too liberal scared firearms.

It’s extremely concerning how maya seems unwilling to learn this. If an animal got loose and was an actual concern to the health of a human being, I find it hard to believe she would be able to do anything but cower in the corner and call for help, which may show up too late to save someone from injury or death. Respecting animals and being concerned about their well-being is one thing, but prioritizing them over the lives of a human is next level evil. I know, this was being done for a vet visit, and I know there is always someone there and they can learn to use dart gun instead but the point remains. Maya seems like a steward for animal welfare when it’s comfortable for her, which sort of flies in the face of the entire point of alveus in general.
Bro she doesn’t need to be the jack of all trades in running this non profit. Just like constructing the enclosures she lets other parts of staff take the reins. It’s necessary for a good leader to step back and let people cover you weak spots. She knows she is squeamish and it knowledgeable in mechanisms so she has Connor do those things much much better than she could.
@@deanrichard1770 oh I absolutely understand what you’re saying for sure. It’s impossible for 1 person to be adept at everything that goes on in such a large project. Feeding animals, getting supplies, scheduling events/guests and managing employees/volunteers. Why not up front in the beginning say hey, I’m not comfortable with this, so Connor will be taking the reins on this one. Maybe even stick around and be entertaining, educate us on exactly what sort of scenario this dart gun would be used in. Tell us why, even though it looks scary and has the same FEELING as a gun, it’s not only a safe way to handle vet visits, but also could save human or animal lives if anything unforeseen were to ever happen. Encourage Connor, invite other employees/volunteers to learn. Make it light, and fun, and educate. Instead she literally acted cold, talked down to Connor and overall acted like was she morally above doing anything that would ever so much as put an animal in the slightest bit of discomfort (a needle being injected via a dart). I’m not asking her to do every job, but don’t act like you’re willing to learn something and then complain the entire time, before saying “yea I’m actually never doing this” and then being dismissive and rude for an entire stream. Just tell us up front, this isn’t something I’ll be doing, but I’ll make sure several volunteers are well versed so if anything happens we are covered. Imo she should know how to do this and more, but it’s not my nonprofit. When you keep wild animals, ambassadors or not there are going to be tough decisions to be made, and the animals are going to have to be uncomfortable sometimes.
I don’t understand any of the negativity in these comments. Connor and Maya are being responsible animal experts. If you’re gonna have any big animals in your sanctuary, you need to be prepared for all situations.
I think she was more scared of the needle being on a pressurized syringe. Which, to be honest, I would also be cautious of. Probably not scared but it's important to know how dangerous the things around you are.
Maya probably should've learned from an instructor. Learning from someone who clearly isn't confident/competent in what they're doing is only going to add fuel to the "something could go wrong" fire.
I have to agree that we saw the lack of maturity in the staff here... While I'm happy to see you guys getting trained on dart gun, you need to revisit that training ASAP. Connor isn't bad, but needs to know the process by heart and be able to get people trough it without hesitation. You do not want to hesitate if a wolf have a health issue and you need to quickly sedate the other. And everyone at Alveus needs to get trained. Even if they don't like the idea. Knowing the whole process makes you useful when it's needed. Even if you simply fetch the supplies needed, you'll know what to get. The dart gun isn't a tool like a hammer or a saw. It may need to be used in a "panic". Video is interesting to learn a bit about dart guns, but gives a vibe of "you guys needs to get more experience with it".
Dude… they are practicing. In no way can that possibly be construed as “ immature”. everybody has a first time and they just choose to do it on camera. This comment is way more “ immature “ than anything shown in the video.
Gawd, dudes, get someone who knows what they're doing, and wants to know. This is so scattered and squirrelly it's scary. And maya's seriously reluctant and resistant.
No respect for that air gun at all, going to look down the barrel next? Maya lives far from help, might want to consider taking care of herself thru some training and regular practice.
And here I thought Maya was a mature, responsible adult. Sulking around because she "doesn't like" something that is an important part of wildlife management, and as Connor pointed out, better the dart gun than an AR-15. Edit: so many comments "aww, but the poor widdle animals." Folks, you're not thinking through all the consequences of such a mindset. A dart gun is the most humane way to deliver medication or tranquilizers to an animal they're not supposed to have direct contact with. Their other option is to simply put the animal down. Which hurts your little feefees more?
I'm an ecologist, and I can tell you this much. The feelings of any person are valid and important to consider. Shes not comfortable with shooting at her own animals, I'm sure most people wouldn't either. She isn't stupid. She knows she needs to learn this for her and her animals safety. She will practice and become more comfortable with it, I'm sure. Maybe the stream was too much pressure added on to a situation she already didnt like, and I cant blame her for that. Also her animal care staff might know how to use tranquilliser guns. Plus they were never planning on getting wolves this early on.
Can you really blame her for being uncomfortable shooting her own animals? Even with a tranquilliser if something goes wrong. Have some positivity guys...
Not to mention - she did say she would learn. Is she happy about it? No. But she'll do it.
@@WolfehMaster guess you glossed over this part 4:53
And would you care to explain to me how they're supposed to handle no contact animals without dart tranqs?
If she was just an employee, this would be a different conversation. But as the OWNER of the sanctuary, it's her responsibility to be prepared to engage in any necessary task. Emergencies don't wait on your schedule or your staff's.
@bchin4005 they're not wild animals in a sanctuary
I can't believe I have to comment on this. Ok, here we go. I have a PhD in environmental sciences. I work with birds, insects, and foxes. Maya's reluctance to use the gun is perfectly valid; Connor did nothing wrong, as they're simply testing a new tool for the sanctuary, and I honestly don't know what's going on in this comment section. Just relax and enjoy the video.
But she's perfectly willing to carry a handgun and shoot humans, if necessary. There's some cognitive dissonance going on here.
And as an industrial welder, I don't get to pick and choose which safety protocols I want to employ. I have to exercise all of them, every time, all of the time. 4:52 she makes it crystal clear that that's exactly what she's doing, and it sends a bad message. There were 100 different ways she could have approached this topic that didn't make her look like a petulant child, but that she chose to upload this says she's fine with it.
Hope those wolves don't suffer for her ego.
@@bchin4005 Yeah, about that. Maya is a board member... Other members of Alveus are responsible for the animals' welfare. She didn't behave like a child; she behaved like... wait for it... a human being. I have collaborated with many local zoos and saw nothing wrong with this video. Children are humans too, and she wasn't acting like an adult, pouting the whole time and running off after barely familiarizing herself with protocol. This isn't a public zoo with a metropolitan support network behind it, it's an independent animal sanctuary, not a goddamn game of Animal Crossing.

@@janaparks929 that doesn't mean if you TOUCH IT you will DIE WITHOUT NARCAN.
The propaganda is seriously everywhere. Reposting my other comment:
Medicine patches usually use other chemicals that facilitate the transfer through the skin.

She knows she is squeamish and it knowledgeable in mechanisms so she has Connor do those things much much better than she could.
@@deanrichard1770 oh I absolutely understand what you’re saying for sure. It’s impossible for 1 person to be adept at everything that goes on in such a large project.
