This video is about string tension. After yoyoing for a while, the string might begin to twist on itself, causing problems during tricks, especially slack tricks.
This is because the yoyo string is made of two smaller threads of string, twisted tightly as one string. Over time, doing certain tricks and even just winding & throwing the yoyo will change the number of twists in the string, creating string tension.
There’s two kinds of string tension: tight & loose.
Here’s the easiest way to check your string tension.
Pinch a section of the string between your fingers so that you have some slack between the two strings.
Now if you have string tension, notice how the string twists.
If the string twists in an anti-clockwise direction, that means your string is too tight.
This is more common for right-handed yoyo players, because the string tightens every time you throw the yoyo.
On the other hand, if the string twists clockwise, that means your string is too loose.
This is more common for left-handed yoyo players, because their string loosen every time they throw the yoyo.
The easiest way to fix this, no matter how tight or loose, is to take the string off your middle finger, and let it hang by holding the yoyo directly.
This will naturally untwist & remove any string tension. If you like, you can also pinch lightly around the top of the string, and slowly slide your way down to get rid of any last small twists.
Now if you test the string tension again, you should notice that the strings barely twist together at all.
This means your string tension is neutral, not too tight or too loose.
Ideally, you want to maintain neutral string tension as much as possible while you do your tricks, especially for tricks which involve slack in the string.
In the next two videos, we will show you 2 tricks which can help you fix string tension with a responsive yoyo.

Hey there, your content and tutorials have been incredibly helpful. I just got my first unresponsive yoyo and the concise way you explain things is perfect. Could you provide (or link if you already have) a good spin start tutorial? Thanks for the great content 👍🏽
