Johnny Williams is the most musical section bari player since the death of Harry Carney. The subtle scoops and accents he adds to his parts, and the way he adds his massive sound to the ensemble and sax section sound, are just awesome.
I've listened to this song so many times. The way the band plays so low but so tight on the second half is just... I mean I can't explain how good it is to hear. It's so nice.
Bill Basie is up there PAINTING... little dabs of the brush... just the right color & texture...!!!!He does it with the piano keys, and he does it with his hands, his shoulders, his smile, his eyebrows... What a treat this is!!!!
Absolutely CLASSIC ! If you don't tap your foot and move with this one - you're dead. Played it so often, I had to locate a CD with this number. Many Thanks . . .
UTTERLY Amazing!! The Epitome of BIG BAND JAZZ! The Count & his Band “Mellow Tone” (1981) - Watch the Count starting at 3:24 when this awesome arrangement (by saxist Frank Foster) really starts cooking (in a cool sense), and watch Basie’s mannerisms as he completely digs all the cool jazz licks & kicks & pops… It’s not the # of notes - it’s the Feel - guys have to play together a long time to get that Basie Sound. I had Fun listening to this - My Father would have gone crazy over this, as I am! THANKS for sharing!!
I watched this video since 2009 and wow... it never grows old... kk the saxi soli and the band soli after that, are the two best solis I know!! killer song...
No doubt about it, Bill Basie was at the Head of the Class when it came to Swingology. Thank God for ears to have heard him. Much appreciation Thiagoalves!!
Count Basie - piano & leader Sonny Cohn, Pete Minger, Darle Carley, Frank Szabo - trumpet Bill Hugues, Dennis Wilson, Grover Mitchell, Booty Wood - trombones Eric Dixon, Kenny Hing - tenor saxophones Johnny Williams, Jr. - baritone saxophone Danny Turner - alto saxophone Bobby Plater - saxophone Freddie Green - guitar Cleveland Eaton II - bass Greeg Field - drums Jo Jones - drums
Well gailalycia you should be proud. Coz your pop and the Count were some of the most awesome musical beings ever to inhabit planet earth!!!! bless am all from here in the UK :-))
@bigemoney31 like that ONE note he plays at 2:44 in the break of that crazy sax soli...he always finds the smallest bits of space and puts one perfect note in there...
This is the band that played in the classic Jerry Lewis film "Ciinderfella". The music at the grand ball given by the princess was provided by the Count Basie Band...note 'Fella's entrance to the party...very, very cool! ;=D
Greg Fields Drums, taking over after Duffy Jackson, who took Butch Miles. I met Greg, and he told me in confidence that him and Bassist, Grover, used to listen to Frank Zappa in the bus... but not with Bill's knowledge; Basie would not have approved. Everyone loved Bill, including late great Joe Williams. Duffy Jackson was son of bassist Chubby Jackson. Where's Dennis Roland these days?
Does it get any better than this? The Count of Basie Plays the Duke of Ellington. Only thing I would request as a boon would be the Honorable Master Joe Williams singing on vocals!
I thought I'd reply to your post, rather than just sit here and moan about what you've said! I can see where you're coming from with the trombonist, but perhaps you're trying to listen too hard? Relax, and try and listen how although he might not be following the tune, he manages to keep perfectly in time and in key. Relax when you listen to jazz!
Hello, I just found out this video ... superb! I love the music of Count Basie. Well done and I would like to invite you to discover one or more of my videos (PARIS BY NIGHT N °...) that I attach to your video, or music of Count Basie (but not only him) illustrates my nice stroll in Paris. And I think music provides a superb showcase in Paris. With all my best wishes and cordial greetings from Paris Serge

Gotta love Basie, just sitting there enjoying his music. Every now and again playing some notes, lovely guy XD
父親がカウントベイシー好きで幼い頃から聴いていました。この曲は特に好きです。
ベイシーは一音でもスイングすると聞いた事があります。聴いていて納得した曲です。
I've listened to this song so many times. The way the band plays so low but so tight on the second half is just... I mean I can't explain how good it is to hear. It's so nice.
cool, classy, swinging.........the best!
Fantastic listening! This band really knows how to swing!
Had a front row seat at one of their gigs about 6 yrs. before this, dynamics and style supreme. And got to meet the Count.
Bill Basie is up there PAINTING... little dabs of the brush... just the right color & texture...!!!!He does it with the piano keys, and he does it with his hands, his shoulders, his smile, his eyebrows... What a treat this is!!!!
Oil based or latex??
Oh man, every time I watch this, the double time at 0:15 gets me every time. Awesome.
This song shows Count Basie Big Band. Not only the individual players are skilled, but the band breathes together! 3:29 part makes you breathless!
Absolutely CLASSIC ! If you don't tap your foot and move with this one - you're dead. Played it so often, I had to locate a CD with this number. Many Thanks . . .
Basie has one of the coolest styles of piano playing! Laid back, but to the point. Love it!
what a great arrangement
this music truly lifts the spirit.

@bigemoney31 like that ONE note he plays at 2:44 in the break of that crazy sax soli...he always finds the smallest bits of space and puts one perfect note in there...
The Count...the best!
This is BIG BAND at it's finest!!!
musica para mis oidos!
@4bigdawgs4 Good point... We know The Count had piano chops, but yep, "less is more", he let's his band do most of "the talking"... LVOE this stuff !
素敵です。
Anything, and I mean anything Basie's band played rates all the stars you can give. The very definition of Big Band Swing.
The best!
This is the band that played in the classic Jerry Lewis film "Ciinderfella". The music at the grand ball given by the princess was provided by the Count Basie Band...note 'Fella's entrance to the party...very, very cool! ;=D
Basie, the best !
Love it !!!
Exceptionally smoooooooth jazz.

Yes!!

I love the T-bone solo. I'm often watching this video solely to listen to it.
Look at those little hands go!
Trombone part for this is insane.
This song with the CB BB has such a driving swing force, it makes your hart jump
SUBLIME!!

THE BEST
That is just FAN-TAS-TIC
that trombone is rockin
Stop dissing and just dig it.....This music is no longer....RIP you guys, seey'all in that special heaven that is for jazz players only....
Another reason why the Count was so great, not only had a swinging band, but his own approach to the piano, "less is more" was beautiful.
wunderbar mellow
Basie was the best for this.
Mister Cleveland Eaton, Bama's finest holding it down walking the bass!
AMEN
Duke Ellington is music for the mind, Count Basie is music for the soul.
Great 👌😎

@theinvisiblelight This is on Basie's WILD AND SWINGIN' CD. Found a reasonably priced one on eBay but what's there now want an arm plus a leg. :O
@PeteMcGuinness In jazz, black is just synonymous with awesome. You weren't black enough on the inside, friend.
@gailalycia9
can you tell me some more about this performance? venue, performers etc.
Thanks
@BassmanII Even if the used plunger's been sprayed down with Lysol... you still know it's been used...
@BassmanII Every time I'd ask to borrow a plunger, I'd always get the crappy used plunger...
Eu quero esse show! Onde eu posso achá-lo?! I Want this show, where i can find him?
That chord progression looks strangely like Rose Room. See Kenny Burrell's
Does anyone else hear the drummer and bass player putting in work through the entire song?
Don't forget Freddie Green on guitar. He was an integral part of that rhythm section.
True. I completely overlooked the fact that Freddie Green was there playing.
Cleveland Eaton on bass always puts in a lot of work - he looks so damn energetic in all the Basie videos I've seen!
Such a damn solid rhythm section.
zuperman2212 of course, Freddie Green stated that his job was to make it sound like the drummer was changing keys .
A lot of accenting; good chart reading.
I cant see whats wrong with the trombonsolo, i really like it.
I will play this song as 1st trombone but very difficult olay!
No better band than Basie!
I thought I'd reply to your post, rather than just sit here and moan about what you've said!

@BassmanII I dunno, I play trombone and I really don't like using mutes at all.
Is Willie Cook in the tpt. section?
And there is the incomprable Cleveland Eaton on bass.
I admire the work your dad has done which one is your dad?
bump bump
@theinvisiblelight Try BASIE SWINGS STANDARDS on eBay - number is on this CD too with a much more reasonable cost. :)
5 stars.
amazing...who is the drummer btw?
swings so much it hurts
i ll defend this music forever.

Lots of great individual performances here, but 5:28....
