Good demo of how you're not supposed to use these stoves. The idea is you fill the stove with wood chips or sticks then light it from the top. The wood gas is drawn down through the centre chamber then back in the top to combust. You should have a smokeless fire in around 1 minute.
This is a misconception many people have.When the stove heats up air is drawn up through the inner/outer wall which acts like a chimney and super heated oxygen in the air combines with the wood gas to give a hotter and complete burn .

Choking the air holes at the top gives a lot of smoke.

Why so many people don't learn how to use stuff. These stove you only load with fuel only to the gasifier holes. Not above them.

Fill stove with timber (not too tight) then twigs & birch bark or whatever you use to start from ferrocerium rod, result is very little or no smoke.
