GREAT WAKERING ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: - The Community Centre was originally a school and the newer houses down North Street are built on the playing/sports field - There's an old fire station opposite the memorial hall - Wakering Stairs can be accessed almost anytime, without permission, as long as there's no live firing taking place. - Foulness Island is accessed via a bridge just past the MOD gatehouse. Normally you have to be invited onto the island by a resident. However, on the first Sunday of the month you are allowed access in order to visit the Islands Heritage Centre - Wakering church was used for the wedding in "Just Good Friends" which was on TV between 1983 and 1986.
I lived in Great Wakering in the 1960s.I lived in one of the semi-detached houses next to the British Legion. The community centre used to be the infant school, which I attended in 1964.Nice to see your video.Good memories.
Great video. I actually visit this place quite a bit for walks in my spare time, so it was nice to see so many of the places I frequent being featured.
Access to Wakering Stairs is usually only allowed at weekends. Access to Foulness is seperate and would need to be arranged with the MOD however there is usually access to the Foulness heritage centre on one Sunday a month ( there is a web site). Unfortunatly due to the pandemic this is currently closed. Wakering church was used for the wedding in 'just good friend's which was on tv 1983-86.
I lived in Wakering from 1953- 1978/9 I attended both schools, the old building then the new Secondary Modern as it was from the mid/late fifties. I recognised much of what you show...I am amazed at how much it's changed in the intervening time. built up far more than I remember....It was a great place to have ones childhood though. Might I suggest Ashingdon church... it has a model Viking longship hanging in the Nave..its connection is King of England, Canute...1016-1035..
The Community Centre was originally a school and the newer houses down north Street are built on the playing/sports field, and you missed out the old fire station which is opposite the memorial hall
I worked for Lou Walker, the boat builder during the mid sixties. The old fire house plus an extension at the rear was the workshop. I worked mostly in the old ready room above the garage where the fire engine was parked.. The garage was used as the paint/varnish shop.
