As someone who speaks both German and English near perfect, i must congratulate the people who did the subtitles.
Well done, up to the reverse printing at times to stay true to meaning and wordplay that till is so fond of.

From the fonts I'm assuming it was Educated Marine who did the subs...he's excellent!
Till, as a teenager, had a poor relationship with his father but he wasn't abused by either parent. Werner Lindemann became an alcoholic and there may have been some verbal abuse on his part, but Till have as good as he got, denigrating his father's profession. The song is about nightmares that affect all children and how the Sandman is an eternal figure of myth, the voice is still present after the orphanage ( a former hospital that had both Hitler and Erik Hoeneker as patients at different times) burns down. The Sandman is seen as benevolent by some, just helping children to sleep but here, he capitalises on their nightmares, using their years to survive. Another masterpiece from Rammstein with a video that had to be shot by two directors as the band weren't happy with the first completed video.
I also didn't understand what D meant by saying, Till had a bad childhood and that he was abused (!). Never heard of that and I'm pretty sure D got something wrong there.😳

Just a side note - my interpretation of this video is also concerning child abuse, especially mental abuse. Children, just to protect themselves, put on emotionless masks - but all this steals their childhood and once they are released, they are disoriented, vulnerable and definitely not ready to enter the real world. 😢

Till has a good relationship with his parents. His father is a children's book author, and his mother is a journalist. The only difficult aspect of his life was that his parents lived separately, and he felt torn between them. Till was simply torn away from home early on due to his career as a professional swimmer. Such career paths were strongly encouraged in the GDR (east germany) with specialized sports schools, living in dormitories, and only going home on weekends. It's not easy in the case of parents living separately. However, he was certainly not abused, and I wonder where these rumors come from.
Richard is the one with the difficult childhood, he never felt loved. That is the essence of the song "Mutter".
I disagree, I have Werner Lindemann's book and at some conversations with Till (Werner, his father called him Timm there), it sounded, that he had hit him from time to time. He also thought his son is ugly AND he never asked Till, if he allows, that his father publish the story from the time Till was living with his father.
At an interview Till said himself, that his mother and himself had a break from each other, because of the difficulties. Only his fathers death, brought them together again. I can see and feel, that Till had it for sure minimum as hard as I had, that is why Till and Richard connect so well, because Richards childhood is also far from a fairy tale. I am a Rammstein-Fan since 26 years and in Austria you might see interviews which you do not see somewhere else. Maybe it is also, that I am so into this band, that I like to read and watch everything around them. But as I was reading Werners book, I hated Tills father. I was feeling pity later on, as I saw Werner after the wall came down. Sitting in a chair surrounded by his book, but no one even really looked at that old guy, who was a well known writer in the GDR. I guess there were many reasons, why Tills father developed cancer.

@@ReactionsbyD When you are a fan since 26 years and was born in Austria (which is next to Germany) and speak this language, you can read other interviews, etc. I am sure, Till had many problems, also because of the sports- team, because these coaches are on another level. I also was once reading an interview, were Till said, that he fell more in love with his grandmother, because after a competition the coach was very mean, but his granny came down and took this coach by his ears and said: "You aren't talking like that to my grandchild." Till took his grandmother home, before she died and was nursing her. Now you know, why I NEVER believed that BS, they were telling about him. I am a female myself and had even do deal with a r*pist in 2014, but because of it, I know from the beginning, how a real victim behaves and when some do it for fame and money. I stood behind Till all the time and showed it on my instagram-account. Was it a good time, no. I got even death-threats. But Till somehow realised it and gave me a card for his concert in London and man, I loved every second of it. I did not meet him, but I was in front row. 😉 Till and I had both a difficult childhood, we both endet up in art and when some would read my stuff, oh my god, I guess they would run. Till was never abused as a child, this is an urban legend. He enjoyed a good relationship with both this parents until they divorced when he was a teenager. At this point his dad became an alcoholic and Till lost all respect for him, they became strangers to each other. I'm sure it was tough, but he was never abused.

This is based on the German version of the sandman a show about the sandman in Germany for kids I think. But yeah your analysis is so good and I think you did Till proud with it.

With a straight interpretation, this song may seem to be a reference to very popular German Kids TV show "Sandmännchen (The Sandman)" from the first lines of beginning part, and becomes a story blended with scary elements such as childhood nightmares, etc.. But this is only the visible side masterfully constructed. In fact the real story is about the children isolated in orphanages after World War 2 in DDR. They had no families and they were nobody's children anymore. They were subjected to all kind of torture and even pedophilia too. This song is their remembrance by a man who has DDR origins, in a unique creative style of art. I recommend watching the first video by Eugenio Recuenco and also the piano version.

There are references to the German children's TV show "Sandmännchen" (little sandman) that told the children that it is now time to go to sleep but before he tells a nice animated story. It started with the first and third line of the Rammstein lyrics "Nun liebe Kinder gebt fein acht, ich hab euch etwas mitgebracht." (Now dear children pay good attention, I have brought you something ...) Of course those stories were not scary.
In German the "burning heart" can have two meanings, first enthusiasm or love for something or someone and second being very sad, depressive, or traumatized. In this case it is surely the second meaning.
As far as I remember it from the making off, the location was a former orphanage.
For this song - I assume - there are as many interpretations as listeners. So here is just my personal interpretation.
The song is clearly about nightmares. But it has also references to child abuse. E.g. in West-Germany in the 60th and 70th there were so called "Kindererholungsheim" (children's convalescent home). Parents - in a large scale - were told that their children seemed to be sickly and some weeks in those institutes would be good for them. The health insurance paid for it. In fact, it was just a big business where children were "stored" at minimal costs. There was also plenty of physical and psychological violence and many children came back traumatized. (A lot of them are still suffering from this "experience".) As the members of Rammstein came from East-Germany, I'm not sure whether there were similar kind of cases in their environment which was even more restrictive than that in the west. From this perspective Till's role in the song/video seems to be a mixture of demon and victim in the same character. Like those children coming back from those "Kindererholungsheim", still carrying the demon (trauma) with them. Or maybe Till is the personification of pure pain.

Yes, that is correct. A television program for children has been broadcast on German television since the 1960s. The little Sandman comes by every evening and tells the children a bedtime story before they go to sleep. The opening is always the same and forms the template for the Rammstein song. There are two videos for the song, if you ignore the piano version. They produced another video with original director Eugenio Recuenco, but the band didn't accept it and had it reworked by their favorite director Zoran Bihać. Eugenio Recuenco was very disappointed about this and, after a dispute with the band, was given permission to release his video on his own.
