It still blows me away that on the night at Magoo' when Jerry asked Phil to play bass in the Warlocks, that he never even held the instrument, let alone played it! 50+ years later, still VERY relevant!
I remember this run. A hard ticket before in the dark made it a lot harder. I only got in on night 4. Bad luck that week? Not really. That's also when Sweet Anne Marie came into my life. It was a blessing.
I flew out from Connecticut for these shows, 18 yrs. old and was blown away! I've been looking for this show for a while, thanks SOOO much for posting!!!
Saw a bunch of Bay Area shows but for some reason I always remember the Kaiser shows being so much fun. I think I saw about 5 or 6 there but not this one, I remember a great Chinese New Years show with a dragon walking around the floor there. Thank you for a real good time!!
I had this on tape many years ago. It was one fo my favorites , the sound on the 2nd set with the Nevilles sitting in was amazing. Perfect to smoke out on the back of a vw van
ha! I was walking around today when a question hit me out of the blue: "I wonder if the Dead ever opened a show with China/Rider?" Then I come home, turn on my computer and look at what's waiting. If that's not a Jungian synchronicity, I don't know what is ...
Couldn't stop laughing when i listened to this show. After wasting a couple decades of my life without the Grateful Dead, a friend's daughter had an extra ticket and invited me along. Dosed in the parking lot, separated from my friend early first step, then i found all these people dancing in the hallways on those hard concrete Kaiser floor, by relay speakers and my friend finally found me collapsed against the wall there after the show! That was all it took for me to buy tickets to the upcoming shoreline shows, which were cancelled after Jerry went down, then another Kaiser show after his return. At Laguna Seca that year, when they filmed the in the dark video after the show, got their early, 3 days of camping and partying, and i was on the bus!
man they botched alota words on this one always grateful tho. music never stopped into might as well was sounding right to me. during iko iko camera man was like close up on everybody to see who was singing and it was none of them lol jerry shoulda done that more French verison of iko i think its on your chsnnel he goes you wont do what the big chief says and shakes his fist whata sight. trippiest intro to truckin ive ever heard on here 1:35.55 nice ending billy was really feelin it
Just watching the 5/13/81 1st set on here before this. Weak and uninspiring. Switching to this: Total Flip, Hot..funky liquid tone.. J's sound and playing on the good nights of 85 & some of 86' have been my favorite for 35 years. When the early 1st set Bob tunes like Uncle , Mexicali are hot like this, you know it's a good night!
Phil! What a beautiful sounding bass! I really wish we saw more of it, this sounds nearly as good as the Klein. Everyone came out swinging here.
What kind of bass was it? It looks like it was shaped like Jerry’s guitar, I love the sound of it too!

I do love this band and there will never be another one (~);}
Rex Haney Odd, Garcia. simply cannot keep his vocals in sync (that is, when he remembers them), yet the instruments are wonderfully tight.
Nothing odd at all. That's how it was supposed to be.
Another Smoker!!! Muchas Garcia's for posting. I Could Not remember where I parked after this one!!! All I could find were damn balloons
