Meanwhile , great post and insight from the Controversy Corner panel .Canterbury were on one heck of a roll once they hit the finals but the vast experience of St George was always going to be an advantage with Grand Final appearances in 1975 and 1977. The Dragons won 5 of their first 8 clashes in '79 with losses in rounds 2 , 5 & round 8 to find themselves in 5th spot . In round 9 St George defeated Canterbury-Bankstown 15-2 in front of over 21,000 fans at Belmore setting a 7 week winning streak in which they reached the top of the table by round 12 and stayed there for the rest of the season claiming the Minor Premiership in 1979. Including that round 9 clash , The Dragons would win 14 of the remaining 16 games of the 1979 season . This includes the Major Semi Final V Parramatta and the Grand Final V Canterbury- Bankstown. Interesting to note was that of the other 4 teams to make the Semis in 1979 ( Western Suburbs , Parramatta , Cronulla-Sutherland & Canterbury ) .....only the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks defeated St George in 1979 . They won the round 8 clash at Kogarah 12-5 in front of 17,043 fans and again in round 19 at Endeavour 18-12 in front of 19,462 fans .
