Dear brother . lm from Yemen, Aden, and my grandfather worked loyally for Britain in the port of Aden, and he lived among you, and he speaks highly of your kindness and good morals. By God, we are sad about your departure from Aden. They lied to us. Aden in your days was beautiful, with good law and order, and we hope that you will return to Aden again, from the bottom of my heart. Thank you to every British person. We love you very much, my dear brother

That film was a gem. Graet to see those classic British aircraft and helicopters in action. The Brits as I see it beat the insurgents at their own game, on the own land. Done without drones, high tech precision munitions, B-52 strikes, with limited air support by fixed wing and rotary, and no fast jets endlessly circling on call for air support. Well done!

I was there from 1965 June 1967. Got my Fiat 1500 there and shipped it home. It is good to see some excellent shots of the Beverleys I (RAF) worked on doing their job. The best part of the tour was coming home even though the swimming at the Italian club was good. The British Army did a fantastic job there. Best army in the world. Nice work Italianoboy thanks for putting this film up.

I was there at school too! Dark hair, crisp white shirt and shorts with a Khormaksar School badge (was it a dhow?), so maybe we passed each other. Dad was RAF. We lived in a big house with a stone staircase and two sets of shutters for protection from sand storms. It was opposite the search compound so we had a sentry with a rifle. I played in the school gang, show, singing 'we're riding along on the crest of a wave', very colonial! Ring a bell? Fond poignant memories. I was handsome and tanned then, all the girls followed me home from school when I got back to the UK but I was too shy for all but the prettiest.

I only flew out to Aden for school holidays 65 - 67. Four times I flew on a BOAC VC10, but the last occasion was on an RAF Transport Command Britannia flying from Lyneham - that was an uncomfortable journey!
The war stories may have been true, especially if he spent time up-country, in the dessert. Even in the built-up areas there was danger - grenades in the street during the day, gun battles at night etc.
maxwellfan55 - I guess that your dad was a senior officer. My father was Sqn.Ldr. and we lived in a flat in Ma'ala straight.
One day I'll look through some of my dad's old cine film to see whether there's anything worth posting - I know that there were some shots of the floods in April 67.

Trust me ma'am... it's nothing to write home about. My Mother was born in Aden and left in 1962. She says it was the best thing ever growing up there. but now??? plz stay away cos it's nothing but a backward and (unfortunately) destroyed country...ALL by the locals own hands...I was working for Doctors without Borders in 2015 when it all kicked off... TRAGEDY is the ONLY word to describe Aden now... sad.

Love the scene where the RAF Regiment is purporting to 'hold the rebels at bay'. Those who remember the SLR will notice no spent brass leaving the ejection opening cover with the sound of small arms fire being subsequently 'dubbed in' for effect.

Hey Those were Radfans. There was an RAF strip there. The beach is Gulmohar (Elephant Bay) lovely to swim there. You're then seeing the Hunters at RAF Khormaksar Flt. 1417 perhaps. What they achieved rocketing the Radfans only God knows. Remember the patrolling on the streets of Crater by Mad Mich's Argyls. Remember my parents and brothers taking us there to fly plastic kites. Dad would relax listening to music on his National Transister. We'd head back home and watch Egyptian movies on the B&W telly while dad had his Carlsberg beer on the Balcony. Good Old Aden. The Selfish Brits left when there was nothing worthwhile to hang on to. What happened after that is one sorry story. My heart bleeds for Aden. InshAllah..Some day maybe...Does any one remember Aden Electrical & General Stores... or Asiatic General stores. R.I.P Peshotan Faramji Buhariwalla.

Does anyone know what weapon some of the sentries are carrying from 6:21- 6:28 One sentry has a rifle slung. But what is the weapon some are carrying in their right hand has they boarding a transport aircraft? During this scene, the narrator says the following: "The sentries, going off duty, head back for a quick beer and a slow game of cards. But, however much they relax,.."

The pictures are fascinating but the commentary is poor: bad script and bad acting. The things that you see are, mostly, real, but the action narrative is almost certainly a lie. I do not believe there was any rebel attack, or that a man gashed his arm just as the film crew was there, which makes the whole thing seem pompous; which is a shame considering what a tiny number of British servicemen achieved.

    • @matthew22nz
      @matthew22nz 5 лет назад

Yes i’m afraid those “rebel attack” scenes are certain to have been a completely staged recreation of an actual attack, which unfortunately was very much the style back then, partly due to the equipment they had available, which was much more cumbersome and time consuming to set up and get recording, unlike today where it is almost instantaneous. And then partly because that utterly contrived ‘perfect’ depiction of the events is what people wanted back in those days, the gritty, right-in-the-heat-of-battle style commonplace with today’s conflict documentaries, where the footage is sometimes jerky or out of focus, would have been considered to be of poor quality and filled with mistakes.

An astonishing document that records one of the lasts lights of the "British Empire" with all the predictable rhetoric.
A newer empire holds sway and claims the same rhetoric. In some ways, nothing has changed in millennia - same sort of rhetoric, same sort of killing. On Aden the Brits bathed on the beaches, in Britain the Romans bathed in their great bath complexes. And they fought and killed - were killed and fought.

  • @David-zb8fy

The exceptionalism of this film is laughable. With respect to those British in the comments with an attachment to Aden, the British were fairly and squarely kicked out of South Yemen. They had no real business being there other than clinging on to the last vestiges of Empire in a dirty campaign to suppress self determination. All in all they handled the withdrawal situation poorly and it was only greed and a strategic port that motivated their presence.
