Paul Lambert is the latest Celtic legend to reminisce about a pivotal match in Celtic’s storied history. In the newest episode of Celtic TV’s My Greatest Game, Lambert takes fans back to the New Year Glasgow Derby on January 2nd, 1998, a match where Celtic triumphed over Rangers 2-0 on their way to securing their first league title in 10 years.
Lambert, featured in episode 9 of the series, vividly recalls the electrifying atmosphere and crucial moments that defined the game, which has a special place in the hearts of Celtic supporters.
“It was a pivotal game without a shadow of a doubt” Lambert reflected. “One of my biggest highlights being a Celtic player.”
Celtic took control of the match with a commanding performance. The first goal came courtesy of Craig Burley, whose strike set the tone in the second half. However, it was Lambert’s unforgettable goal that truly sealed the victory and etched the game into Celtic folklore.
“It just sat up really nice for me and I thought ‘I’m going to crack this one.’” Lambert recounted. “I’ve played in loads of big games here, I’m not sure I’ve seen anything quite like it. It was mayhem.”
The win not only gave Celtic bragging rights over their Glasgow rivals but also played a crucial role in their journey to clinch the league title after a decade-long wait and the ramifications for the rest of the season that year.
“The significance of it was so important because it kept this club’s history intact with the great Lions side who were just the best Celtic team in the history of the club.” Lambert said. “It gave us that feeling how to win it and going into the St. Johnstone game, it gave the club the feeling of winning again and the feeling of winning the title again.”
Lambert’s detailed and passionate recount of the 1998 Glasgow Derby is sure to evoke fond memories for Celtic supporters as they relive a defining chapter in the club’s history. Be sure to catch the full episode of My Greatest Game on Celtic TV NOW.

A lot of people give a lot for the team, but giving up your front teeth takes giving to a whole new level.

Was it not Burley that got his teeth knocked out?

@@robbiemontgomery581 I'm sure Burley has missing front teeth. But, I'm thinking of Paul Lambert's mouth hitting the post as he defended the goal against the rangers.

@@concernedcitizen1984Lambert lost his front teeth in a collision with Jorg Albertz back in late 99. I'm sure he came into accidental contact with Albertz's knee when he slid in to tackle him.
