- Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has issued an apology after departing from D-Day commemorations in France ahead of schedule.
World leaders, including King Charles and Prince William gathered to honour the anniversary of the 1944 Normandy landings.
Mr Sunak left following a British event, leaving Foreign Secretary David Cameron to join US President Joe Biden and France's Emmanuel Macron.
On social media platform X, he posted: "It was a mistake not to stay in France longer - and I apologise."
The Prime Minister acknowledged that the 80th anniversary of D-Day was "a profound moment," saying that the "ultimate sacrifice" of those who risked their lives should not be "overshadowed by politics."
He wrote: “On reflection, it was a mistake not to stay in France longer - and I apologise.”
In contrast, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer remained at the event until the end.
Rishi Sunak returned early to record an interview with ITV.

instinctively if only, on a wider political note i'd agree, it was shady for Sunak to sneak-out before the main shindig----but, he's OF INDIAN heritage, so he knows from the premise of facts like I DO....the west didn't win the WW2, the Soviet/Russia did, therefore it's catastrophically embarrassing to seat there watching the former colonists celebrate fakery and propaganda as deluded facts.....

It’s probably the biggest blunder he will make in his lifetime. It’s walking proof of Party first and People second. It shows he knows zip about the culture of the British people and what 330,000 soldiers went through on D-Day. I don't care if an Asian is born and raised in Britain, the household will still be raised Asian, with Asian traditions and culture. No British leader would think of doing this, but a diversity pick who isn't British certainly will... I don't care if this sounds racist, we have leaders of nations who are supposed to maintain the national culture, I don't know how an Asian can maintain British culture when they have only observed or partaken in it rather than lived it...? I couldn't hope to lead an Asian nation, even if I was raised there with British parents, because I would still be raised in a British household, just in a foreign land.. I'll never understand the culture just because I lived among it but went home to a foreign culture to the land I live in...

Just in PR terms, Rishi Sunak had the ideal public stage on which to show himself, rubbing shoulders with veterans, Presidents and heads of state from around the world, to commemorate one of the most decisive military engagements of the Second World War. But instead he scurries away from that, back to the UK, for some ridiculous media interview where he doubled down on the lies he told about alleged Labour tax plans that he made in his TV head to head with Starmer. And this from the leader of a party that wraps itself up in the flag, that always likes to consider itself as the patriotic party, that always stands behind the armed services. And the fact that he and his advisers didn't consider just how bad this would look, with him placing cheap, points scoring party politics and electioneering above commemorating fallen heroes of eighty years ago, just highlights their lack of judgment and common-sense. Didn't he think that people would notice his absence, when Biden, Macron, and Cameron were there? Even the German Chancellor was there. He has torpedoed his own election campaign more effectively than anything that the opposing parties could throw at him and the Tory Party.
