I eat a spoonful of flax seed every day and over the past couple of years I have incorporated soy milk, tofu, tempeh, edamame, etc. in my diet and I have experienced a big difference in my hot flashes and night sweats. Japanese women don't experience menopausal symptoms to the extent that American women do because of the prevalence of soy in their diet. A new study from 2023 also found that older Japanese women who consumed soy products regularly experience better and more independent quality of life as they age - they don't have as much difficulty walking up stairs, dressing themselves, etc.

My coffee definitely has polyphenols and isoflavones because I make my latte with a Tablespoon of fresh ground flax and my homemade soy milk from whole organic soybeans from frozen edamame pods. I also sometimes use tahini or fresh made walnut milk!

It’s ok to take phytoestrogens if you’re taking estradiol?

Dr Gersh, do you have any thoughts about consuming phytoestrogens while on HRT? Specifically, do phytoestrogens compete or block oestrogen receptors and make the HRT less effective? I'm on transdermal oestradiol, I wasn't absorbing very well, and stopped using soya milk in case this was preventing the oestradiol from binding properly. I'm unable to find any really useful information on this, and also, if phytoestrogens could actually be supportive for women on HRT, that would be great to know too. Thank you 😊xx

I found studies that show phytoestrogens lower serum estradiol so is this something young women with very low estradiol should not eat? It seems they attach to estrogen receptors and make the body produce less

Exactly!! I’ve read that phytoestrogen attach to estrogen receptors and block real estrogen from getting in.

I thought phytoestrogens block estrogen receptors from receiving real estrogen? Is it counter productive to use HRT and phytoestrogens together? Do you actually get the health benefits of estrogen from phytoestrogens?
