  • Before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, it was widely believed to have the world's second-strongest military, second only to the United States. However, the ongoing conflict has exposed significant weaknesses in Russia's military capabilities. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken famously remarked that Russia's military might is now seen as "the second-strongest in Ukraine." This video delves into the key reasons behind Russia's military struggles, from significant troop losses and low morale to outdated equipment and systemic corruption, all contributing to a crumbling military façade.

More specifically, alcoholism. Ten years ago I used to chat with Russian women and they always complained that their men were useless unemployed drunks. However, can you blame them? At the time, Russia under Putin was banging the war drum and as this video points out, they dont have a lot of war veterans due mostly to acute lead poisoning. They read the writing on the wall, not a lot of motivation for them as a result, might as well be drunk.

@@markwarnberg9504 That's true. Just not enough to sustain a near peer war. Nobody has production capacity just lying around for decades on the off-chance they're going to need a million shells a month. So with or without Ukraine NATO, just like everyone else, would find themselves with a massive shortage of everything in a matter of weeks. And that would last for as long as it takes to create a war economy. Every country is a paper tiger after a couple of months of intensive near peer war, except the US which could probably manage 6. This is the reason why Ukraine is struggling. Russia was given time to hunker down and move towards a war economy, whilst Ukraine's suppliers are still playing at it.

Part of the issue is the common misunderstanding about Russian vs Soviet. For the longest time, the two were used interchangeably, and the need for correction was slight. Now the difference is staggering.
The Soviets were not genius tactician, they weren't skilled tactician, the idea was overwhelming firepower in a surprise attack and move quickly. The whole system is wasteful, but can be effective if the cost isn't considered. And remember, Putin is from the intelligence side, so he didn't get dirty in the barracks and harassed by senior enlisted personnel. Add to this the staggering corruption at every level, and it's a wonder the units were able to mobilize at all.

These were next generation systems only just entering service, and the first, a brand new, intact, undamaged and complete (with operators manuals) self propelled unit was captured after its crew abandoned it when it ran out of fuel.
The CIA were particularly interested in the capabilities and vulnerabilities of this new system, so Ukraine gave it to them!
The second unit was captured soon after.
Each independent system cost forty two million dollars to buy, and Russia lost two of them in perfect working order!
In material alone, Russia has lost many billions of dollars, that nearly new submarine Ukraine sank a few weeks back cost over 300 million dollars, and it had only just had many millions of dollars in repairs after Ukraine hit it with two rockets!
They waited until it was repaired and ready to undergo sea trials, then they sunk it!

I'm no expert, but you cannot help but question why the Ukraine invasion has gone on for so long. My initial perception of the Russian military had them conquering the Ukraine in a few months, if not weeks. It will be 3 years this winter, and no sign of an end to the conflict. Can Putin really expect young Russian men to maintain the will to fight through another winter?

Whilst many seem to be shocked by the apparent weakness of the Russian army, it shouldn’t come as any surprise. Chechnya should have taught people this. But from Russia’s pyrrhic victory in Chechnya we should know that Putin will not care what it costs to get what he wants. I felt like the only person at the very start saying that this war would last for years, whilst most were claiming weeks or even days. It is foolish to overestimate the Russian army and VKS, but it is also foolish to imagine the cost in lives will have the kind of effect hoped for.
For years former advisors to Putin who defected have said he wouldn’t respond to compromise unless the compromise is to give all he wants. He does respond to threats though, especially when they are not empty. If he were told now that he either leaves Ukraine fully within a week or NATO will join in the side of Ukraine, Crimea would be back in Ukrainian hands by the end of the week. His nuclear threats are empty since so much of the Russian nuclear arsenal is so far beyond the decommission date and terribly stored that it would be useless for anything other than as a threat. Putin knows he couldn’t take on Poland as well as Ukraine, even if Belarus joined, and it wouldn’t just be Poland he had to face. He knows that such a war would see an end to his power and he’d rather keep power in Russia whilst ceding Crimea and the Donbas region back to Ukraine than risk taking on NATO. He made enough empty threats in Syria and has done so many times since in Ukraine. It’s time to stop taking his threats seriously and to instead be the ones to offer up a serious threat that would be followed up on. I do not believe he would stick around to find out. He would face a war on two fronts, with frontlines thousands of miles long. He is psychopathic and narcissistic, but not stupid. I truly believe NATO could end this war in days without firing a single shot. This has been the case since I witnessed firsthand the invasion of Donets’k along with that of Crimea where I wasn’t. The appeasement of 2014 led to this escalation in the war that never truly ended back then. More appeasement will just see him make moves in Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, and Kazakhstan as soon as the dust settles. Play him at his own game and win with the immensely stronger hand.

Since Kursk, Russia has the second strongest army in Russia.
We instituted the draft in the summer of 1940, and started mobilizing National Guard divisions in October of the same year. Although we had a lot of men who had a year of service under their belts, their training was mainly individual and platoon/company level training. It took another year building integration of infantry, artillery, and armor at the battalion brigade and division levels before we were ready for an attack in Europe, in Operation Torch. Given what I have heard of Soviet era training, the Russian conscripts are likely still undertrained two years after they were mobilized.

One more reason for the lack of morale is the terrible mistreatment of the ordinary soldiers by their officers. It has always been the doctrine of the communist or communist minded governments to overwhelm the enemy with a huge number of troops but this steam roller doctrine does not work anymore. The Chinese used this tactic in 1979 when they attacked Vietnam but they learned a lesson with more than 20 000 killed in one month even though they outnumbered the Vietnamese more than 3 to 1.
