I found myself here to see if I was missing anything, Currently, use a Roland RT-30 with my EAD10 (which I love) and decided and very pleased with the hybrid setup for live gigs. Recently I wanted to expand and add a trigger for my floor tom and decided to give this Yamaha DT50s a try for the sake of the same brand compatibility. Definitely concur with this review, I love the build quality, but the response is not great for more sensitive playing. I also found cross stick playing is very inconsistent. Sending it back to Amazon today and ordering another Roland Trigger.
Thanks for finally making a review on something I actually have... I have 6 of these DT50S triggers on my acoustic to electronic kit hooked up to my Yamaha DTX502 module. I've had no issues with the triggers loosening. They've stayed firmly attached for the past 6 months. The only problem I face is the accuracy of the snare rim shots in combination with head shots and ghost notes. The rim does not seem to trigger very well and does not sound realistic. I haven't really tweaked the settings. Just pretty much left it at the preset trigger settings for DT50mesh on the module. Other than the snare rim issue, the DT50S/K triggers work very well with the DTX502 module.
Wow. Yes I also use my 4* DT50S and DT50K triggers on conventional shell kit kit but I use Mesh heads. I also use the DTX502 module along with Yamaha cymbal pads as part of my set up. At home, I can silently rehearse, but I can still use the kit live so that the band "looks" like it has a drum kit while still being able to comply with the venue rules of "must use electronic drums" as so many venues now enforce. I am really happy with this rig... However, I too struggle with the response of the "cross stick/rim strike" on those softer tunes or when you need that "click" as the back beat. This is sadly inconsistent to the point that I have set up a TP65 pad as a percussion pad for when I need a cross stick in a song to get around this or for tambourine or cowbell as required. With acoustic drum triggers that are external/rim mounted you need to barely tighten them. Over tightening will create too much friction causing the bolt to loosen. It will also affect the sensitivity and accuracy of the trigger. Like ddrum triggers, if you just turn the bolt until it catches the rim then that is all you need to do.
Every external trigger I ever tried loosened with mylar heads. in the end I opted for internals in the shape of Triggera. Brilliant on snares and all toms except floor toms where severe dampening was needed in spite of some serious setting adjustments.
The snare in the video has black painted metal rims. I never used rubber rims anywhere in this video. I'm glad your DT50S stayed in place, mine just didn't.
I had the same experience as Justin. I've got a yamaha DTX750 module with acoustic converted drums. ( mix of drumtec and roland powerply heads ). I've been using roland RT30s for a few years. As all my cymbals and my kick pad are Yamaha I figured I'd change the triggers to Yamaha too, to make an all-yamaha kit, but I returned the Yamaha triggers after testing them because the Roland RT30s gave better triggering.
Hey man love your channel and have been watching for a while. I’ve really been getting into drumming recently and have my own make-shift drum kit at home. [composed of a snare drum, practice snare which I’m using for hi hat, and a base drum pedal and practice tower.] I have a $1500-$2000 budget what do you think is my best option. I plan to stay with drums for at least the next 5 years. I am a piano and guitar player so I will always keep with an instrument that i love for at least that long. I also play with my schools band which you only get to play “percussion” which is snare drum base drum and timpani. Going into high school however will include drum set. I would greatly appreciate your help. Thanks love the vids

I just bought the EAD10 and want to fit a snare with a mesh head and trigger to try and make a realistic practice situation. I was thinking about buying this trigger and a Drum-Tec real feel head. No I’m not so sure. What do you think would be the best trigger/mesh head solution for the EAD10?
@@lonestarthundergamer I went ahead with my plan. I ordered a Realfeel head and the DT50S trigger and fitted on a 13" snare. I love the mesh head, it's really good! I also got the trigger dialled in pretty good (it needs som fiddling). What I'm not so happy with is the EAD10 triggered sounds. It's "machine-gunning" pretty bad. But for practice it's still a good package. The bonus is that I can very easily go from triggered silent-ish practice to pratice with my normal snare and cymbals if I'm home alone.
I got this trigger with the EAD10 Module and tied to use the Evans mesh head for practice and no, it did not work at all. The settings have to be tweaked I think. On the toms they work great (I got two extra ones with the mesh heads) I know this video is about the DT50S but just FYI, the EAD10 does not pick up the bass drum if it has a mesh head
Dude the EAD was brutal machine gunning hahahaha oh man... Looks only get you so far gotta bring da goods!! The loosening reminds me of the cheap DDrum triggers I used to have for like a week before I took them off because they suck ass lol Nice review man.
So I know this is four years old, but I have a serious question. With this trigger, and the EAD10, am I able to do rim shots, cross sticking and just strike the head? I'm worried that a rim shot will register as a cross stick.
If you were using it for jazz drumming and/or with brushes, it probably wouldn't come loose so quickly, I would imagine. Because the drum's not vibrating as much as it does when you're hitting it a lot harder for regular beats. Just my thoughts. Loved the video, as I've been contemplating getting an acoustic snare and this trigger for my Ekit.
Help Justin. . So the basic set for DT50S to DTX502 Module is to plug it to kick channel and assign snare voice sound. There is an advance set but u can only plug it to the kick and tom channels only than assign the DT50S to the trigger. I'm a little confused. Please shed some light. I'm curious have you plugged the Roland snare trigger to your DTX502 module into the snare input and did it trigger both the snare and rim? Any feedback would be much appreciated thanks Justin.
Got this and the bass drum version for my dtxtreme worked great but after a while a bit wonky needs set up a lot bass drum is probably bettter if your using a sing pedal your right thought it is solid and great if your just playing a groove but jazz is impossible
What would be a good side mounted trigger to use with the Yamaha dtx6 module on an acoustic snare? I was considering this but the review has changed my mind. Perhaps a simple DDrum red shot trigger?
I hate it I made my own drum triggers out of stock aluminum and they are all center mounted easy but the problem I had was I have the Dtx 900 and it’s piezo/switch unfornuately and so I thought we’ll if I got 4 of these DT50S triggers I could essentially run them mono from 12,13, 14 and 15 for my rim and other side triggering nope that didn’t work because it as you touched on does not have a great sensor for rim shots let alone for your regular head shots. I don’t know if everyone I bought is broken or what but I still cannot get a rim shot so I spent 550.00 on useless crap of chrome metal. If I knew buying the dtx900 we’re going to be nothing but a headache I would have went with a Roland td 30 or whatever it’s called. I don’t know what to do because I can’t return these cause they were opened up

Yamaha 50k (for kick) + 50s (for snare & toms) or Roland RT-30 series or 2Box TrigIt 5-Piece Trigger Kit or DDrum Chrome Elite Trigger Pack Which would be more suitable and can adapt to most modules? what drum trigger would you recommend if i want to have both the unaffected, mic'd sound of the acoustic drums, with triggered hits being mixed in together? in particular i'd like something that does not muffle the head or require muffling of the head, since i prefer a very resonant, open drum sound. thanks!

It don't matter how good a trigger looks or how well its built if the triggering is sub par its not worth a hill of beans. I'll stick with my roland RT triggers.
I own a DT50S and DT50K running with Remo silent stroke heads, maybe not going through Yamaha gear is the issue? I've found mine to be too sensitive at times, has to raise the ms/response. Additionally, I placed mine on a snare and kick months ago, neither has budged.

That’s what I did and it -just snug and it’s never come loose and seems to work great so far☮️

Derek Frampton no I’ve not tried these. But he’s said they loosen so it’s common.

My rims are all die cast, but still nothing stayed on. The worst ones were the pintech ones.
I’d love to design a trigger. I’ve had so many and I have some excellent ideas of how to make the best trigger for the gigging musician!

Are the Roland triggers working ok with your yamaha module? Just ordered a couple of the RT30h for my EAD10. Hope I didn't make a terrible decision

It sounds similar to my experience with Roland RT30HR. Decided to go back to pd-120 for snare.
