- In South Africa, the cost of having and raising one child can easily reach R1 681 470 for the average middle-income family. That’s more than R90 000 a year!
Assuming an inflation rate of 6% per annum and the cost of raising your child at R90 000 per year, you're more likely to be looking at around R3 million from birth to age 18.
That’s just the average, before all the extras so in this video, we’re going to look at what going into that amount and what you’re in or in store for when you don’t family plan.. lol.
According to the Recorded Live Births data released by Statistics South Africa, a total of 932 138 births were registered with the Department of Home Affairs in 2023. Of these, 848 337 (91,0%) were for births that occurred in 2023, while 83 801 (9,0%) were late registrations of births from previous years.
Having a baby in South Africa is a significant financial and emotional commitment for every parent involved.
According to Guardrisk's Admed, Gap Cover claims received in 2019, show that the average cost of a Caesarean section in South Africa, excluding hospitalization, was R38,000 to R44,000, whereas a normal delivery costs R24,000 to R25,000.
Discovery Health data showed that the average cost of a natural birth in 2018 was R24,866, with an average hospital stay of 2.7 days.
On average, a Caesarean delivery costs R43,726 and requires a 3.8-day stay.
The average shortfall payments on a C-Section over the last two years was R8,000 and on normal birth, R7,400. “If baby needs to stay in hospital longer than three days, these costs escalate.
Actually if you have had a child in recently, please let us know what you paid for a natural or a c-section birth. In The comments section.

I just found out my girlfriend is pregnant and i'm going to be a dad. It's crazy how the algorithm works. I've been stressing about the upcoming costs😭
tips from me as father of two boys allow your kids attend those kasi creche until the age of 4 then from 5 years introduce him/her to those middle class creche and take them to those public school you attended then later on when you see you have saved enough then move them to those private school, then your children would have bit history of Kasi nd Urban growing up. So that should anything happen to you guys cant afford the private you can always take him to kasi. That how my boys are growing a bit of everything sharpe their minds.
😂😂😂😂😂
Congrats bro
@@JerryMjeke2501No just send them to private schools.
Usenjeni😂
Congratulations
This is the perfect ad to promote abstinence
I gave birth vaginally last year @ a birthing center with midwives and I did not pay more than R15k. I claimed back from medical aid without a hustle because it's actually cheaper for them.
Thank you for the informative video.👌🏾

very rude this one 🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂
bro i wont lie, i love these type of content and topic/ideas. they very real and grounded in reality of a south african not these articles we see from people in the USA or UK
I was thinking about this a few minutes ago. The algorithm knows my thoughts
this is all fearmongering, While it is true that raising a child does involve some unavoidable costs, the idea that babies are overwhelmingly expensive is largely based on choices made by parents. Many of the expenses often cited as essential are, in fact, optional.
if you were to estimate, how much would you a consersevative amount is of raising a kid from 0 - 18 years?
Ya. My mother didn't even spend 60k on us a year.😂
Man, don't pull up with that Hotep crap
Yep, this is fearmongering at its best. Majority of South africa doesn't even make 90k a year let alone spend that on one child.
@@herchellparsons9890 man is BSimg with those stats don't get us wrong. But lest not pretend most people have kids without proper planning and we as a society bare the issues that come with that when they become terrorists
I'm having my first child in my thirties. Danko.
Bro I have told myself that too ay😩😩
I've been struggling with getting the strength to tell my family that I won't ever be having a child (getting a vasectomy).
Not only because of the costs and terrible economy. But also, what world am I bringing a child in to. To much chaos in life. To much crime, to much violence, to much corruption, etc. Will there even be jobs in 2035?
I do want a family one day, but, it's a dream I've chosen to let go of😢🥺
Don't give up, my guy. Situations change and you never know you might be able to handle those concerns when you get older
Me too 👆🏽
Bro. Your ancestors lived through apartheid, wars and colonialism. And they still managed to have families. It's not about the time period you were born into its about how you manage it.

Love your content bro. This episode idea must have been an argument between yourself and your significant other YA GETTT! 😅
Lol We just had our first born two weeks ago (It's a daughter). I'm so glad we planned and took our time for having a baby. Having an unplanned baby is really crazy business. The cost of giving birth at the Hospital alone at a private hospital is plus minus is R21 000, It was a natural birth, but they were expecting the mother of my child to actually give a C-Section cause of the claims can amount to R40 000 which is crazy but we chose not to go that route, but I understand that some women can't handle the natural childbirth as it may be a health risk depending on the state of your health. The Doctors didn't even really do anything but consult and give advice. My props really goes out to all the nurses that took care of us they really deserve bonuses!
They always push for c sections coz it's money for them, so annoying.
Congratulations on your baby girl
@@likhayadiko6045 They really love milking Medical Aids, our money really! Thank you! 🙏🏾
Oh and the lawyers for when they take you to maintenance or children's court. because of the number of people who separate after having kids - Another topic for another day

2 years back i had my 1st born. discovery medical covered a c-section, the break down cost was around 88thousand including gynaecologist visits and scans prior to giving birth. currently, i am crying with the costs of pampers and wet wipes. kunzima..
The costs related to raising bambinos often depend on the choices made by the rents. Anyway, Get somebody else to do it! I ain't doing it. Ke shap!
The price ranges of things are way off, especially schooling, that's location-dependent. Homeschooling is even cheaper.
Great content bro, keep it up that's some reality check right there.
This is something a single parent should absolutely not have to go through. My gosh these figures. 👀
Really interesting stuff Zimasa! The banter is much appreciated as well 😅
Your video is quite informative, and it’s clear you’ve done your research on the costs of raising a child in South Africa. However, I believe it’s important to approach this topic with more nuance. While the estimated cost of over R3 million by age 18 might be accurate for some families, as you claim, not everyone’s lifestyle is the same. Many of us grew up in households that likely spent far less annually, yet we still received a decent upbringing and turned out just fine.
Referring to children as "little unemployed terrors" feels dismissive and counterproductive. It’s crucial to remember that, despite the financial costs involved, children bring immense joy and fulfilment to many families. Labelling the decision to have children as something to avoid purely due to costs could be seen as fearmongering and oversimplifies a complex, personal choice. This perspective overlooks the emotional rewards, societal contributions, and personal growth that come with raising a child. Focusing solely on financial concerns can create unnecessary fear, contribute to declining birth rates, and deepen inequalities, as less affluent families may feel pressured to avoid parenthood. Such narratives risk undermining the value of family, community, and the future societal structure as a whole.
Love the humour and staying on point.😹
You forgot to mention damages or inhlawulo for for us Black people at least for the unmarried...
We paid R21K for C section for our 1st born this year January
Public or Private hospital ?
I gave birth to both my kids at a public hospital and had the best experience both times. It was free. Both natural births
When did Mooshtaffa start being funny😂😂😂
😂😂 ubathuke wabaqeda abantwana, I love the content bhuti
Ubalayile😂😂😂😂. Bayabhora
Well researched content as always bawo ❤😂🎉
Hi Zimasa, thank you always for great, engaging content.
The costs start even before the baby is born, seeing that even baby showers resemble mini white weddings!!!!!!!!!
In addition, at private schools, there' the extracurricular activities. School tours are international to the US, UK, Australia just to mention a few.
From Grade 3, a child must have a tablet, in private schools they will tell you it must be an iPad. Then, there is the never ending social activities around the bundle's birthday, events that have become drinking festivals for parents.
Kuningi and it's getting kuningiest.
The iPad requirement isn’t true, my kids private school provides laptops for them
While some countries pay one a fee for every child one births. We are being swindle guys and they wonder why the birth rate is dropping in some continents. Japan recorded zero births for 90days...
My baby came 6 weeks premature and was in ICU for 3 weeks. I thank God that I joined my employers medical aid when I did because my daughter's hospital stay cost Discovery R254k and they paid every cent.
I don't remember what the cost of my wife's surgery was though
I'm not one for generalizations but it's quite funny how the cost of education keeps rising while the quality of education keeps declining. Ya neh!
Yeah, seems like we're converging towards private schools. I mean, the 30% pass rate for me is an indicator of the downwards trajectory we're taking
Yhoooo yhoooo yhooo chief......am becoming a father in 6 weeks. Uthini kimi mara ye?😭😭😭
You’ll be just fine. In fact, you will become more than fine… we are not here for only-children 😅

Nah! How much does a Vasectomy cost?
Even me I'd like to know.
Always choose vaginal delivery… yes it’s cheaper but it’s also better for your body and womb if you wish to have more than 3 kids in future
Nice video as usual, keen given all this chat about hosting F1 in SA. Can you do a video on the cost of hosting an F1 race including how other races are funded in other countries.
Tag Gayton after 😂
Thank god that I don’t want children. I got a great career and I can spend all of that money on myself 😂 Good luck to the rest of y’all.
Let's hope you will be blessed with a life where you'll never need any kids any people to help you. Coz otherwise all the 'thingz' you spend money on would then need to step up.

@@amberleach5501FACTS! 😂
@amberleach5501 well, pray that they take up careers in taking care of people who choose to be selfish 🤣🤣🤣 and that they were raised well and won't abuse you in your fragile state
@@mamahlahamoloi6950 come up with new arguments! The classic 'who will take care of you when you are older', is a old and tired fear mongering tactic to coerce people into choices that they don't want for themselves. Having children so they can 'help' you is not selfish? Lmao! 1855 mentality.

Moral of the story, there’s no better time than right now to have a kid 👍
That's relative. Could be the worst time now if you're unemployed. Even if the costs are lower than they will be in the future, it doesn't make a difference since you have nothing to give. Whereas the future might be a better time if you're employed, even if the price is high. It'll be worse in the future if the price is high and you're unemployed
