👍 Great video. It’s surprising how intimidating cast iron is for newbies I remember my Mother in law teaching me 45 years ago it’s all I use as well. Love you sweet friend.
I was taught to use soap only if absolutely necessary (by mother and both grandmothers). I've seen my mama heat the cast iron back up to clean it (just as you described) many, many times, and she always dries it thoroughly and rubs on a thin layer of oil or shortening before putting it away. Since that's what I know to do, that's pretty much what I do, too. What you said about the lye makes a lot of sense for how "no soap" came to be. This was fun to watch; thanks! 🙂
This was great, Katie! I have a couple dozen pieces of cast iron down in the basement I would love to restore and display like you have yours.😁 I had no idea about the lye thing!
Go for it! I'd love to come to your area to teach my Cast Iron Care & Cookery Class!😀If that is something that your friends would like, feel free to email me and I can send details. mrskatie@yahoo.com ❤️
I only ever use salt or the boiling water about not using olive oil to restore what about cooking we have health issues in my home we use olive oil and vegetable oil can I use this to season also I appreciate all your help blessings to you and yours
Hello, regarding olive oil, I do not cook with it because it becomes rancid when heat to a high temp. I realize that cooks across TV use it for "health reasons" but I don't want to consume rancid oils. I use it when not heating like in salad dressings and drizzling over foods, etc. I don't own veg oil as it has been proven to cause health issues as well. It is a processed oil. We use animal fats as they are nourishing foods which are very healthy. I do cook with avocado oil a lot as well. And, we use olive in the ways I mentioned. The reason that olive isn't good for seasoning cast--iron (low smoke point) is the same reason we don't heat/cook with it. Can you use veg oil to season a skillet? Yes, you can. It does have a high smoke point. This is just info on what I do in our home. Of course, you do what you think is best after your own research. Thanks for watching. ❤️🏡❤️katie

Hey friend, Mr. Patient and I were born and raised in mid TN for 52 years. Moved to Ohio 4 yrs. ago. Thanks for watching! I love SC. We almost moved to Traveler's Rest in 2018 with a job change. Beautiful area! I have a friend in Lexington. Also, love Walhalla and, of course, the coast. I could go on and on....there are so many beautiful people and places in this world of ours. ❤️🏡❤️
