It depends on what level of Fed custody you're in. The lower level federal prisons are like a boot camp if that and some don't even have fences around them but you get to the Super Max and you could be fighting for your life on a daily basis depending on how you're living.

While fed facilities can be no joke, state facilities are far more active violence-wise and the racial disparity is more prominent, not to mention the living conditions are generally horrid.
