I love how they presented Orloks death. Instead of once again turning to ash - like in all vampire movies - he shrivles up. As if all the dark magic that kept his body undead left him and nothing but the weak, fragile, wrotten corps that he truely was remained. The spindly legs and hips give me literal goosebumps
Indeed. I even felt a little bad for Orlok when the sun illuminated him. My opinion is that he didn't feel "tricked", but that there wasn't a future anymore after this ecstasy he'd experienced with her, so might as well just see the sunrise for the first time in centuries. "An appetite", nothing more, bound to Ellen until death. His appetite was satiated.
This for me was one of the most poignant moments in the film for me. Ellen’s sacrifice had caught me so off guard that I’ve fell into tears over her situations and her fate. This is one of the most emotionally brutal sacrifices I’ve seen a character make, who brought destruction upon an entire village only to pay the price lying with a monster that is an incarnate of evil to destroy Count Orlok.
Definitely didn't catch anyone off guard. This is the horniest vampire movie yet, unnecessarily so, so of course they're gonna end on sex with the villain. Too predictable. Eggers like ending movies where innocence is lost and credits roll.
@@stinkfinga4918 In the end he executes in such beautiful and grotesque fashion. Every movie I have seen from him is nothing but Art. Plus he doesn’t abide by typical Hollywood standards. I couldn’t imagine the courage and strength it took for her to make her sacrifice. Imagine this evil, dead, and ugly monster haunting and assaulting you your whole life, and you’ve been trying to free yourself from him. Meanwhile, people are dying at the wrath of this demon and the only way to stop him is to give in and let him have your blood, all night… 😔
I do not feel bad for nosferatu, ellen was basically saying that nosferatu was SA'ing her like nosferatu did bad things to ellen when she was a child. I feel bad for ellen.
He was not SA’ing her at all. She wanted to have sex with him. That was her desire since she was a child. She was very lonely, and she prayed for some kind of connection with anyone and didn’t care what it was so when her prayers were answered unfortunately it was Nosferatu and after she had sex with him the first time she had those thoughts that kept recurring in her head and her dreams of trying to feel that again it was only when she married Thomas that those dreams and everything relating to having sex with Nosferatu stopped but then with Thomas left to go sell a house to Nosferatu it started back up again
A part of me thinks the count knew and wanted to die. After living so long as a "loathsome beast", constantly thirsting for blood and alone, he probably hated his existence.
That's too much empathy in that interpretation. I think he was consumed by his appetite and lust. He gamed online till sunrise, and now he has to go to work
No, he is pure evil. Don't try to empathize with him. He has zero redeeming qualities and gives no indication he "wishes for death." He said it himself. He IS appetite, sin, lust, death, plague. He is all the very worst of what makes us human.
I think it was both things. He knew he was a disgusting beast and must have already been tired of his miserable existence. Only he was still hungry and couldn't be killed before consuming as much as possible, and Ellen had become his target. When they finally got together, Orlok knew he had to leave at the right time, but he was so lost in desire and lust that time passed and it was too late. When he realized he had to go, but still went back to devouring Ellen, it was as if he said: "Screw it! This is too good. I'm going to suck this woman all over even if it kills me!" And when the sun came up it was like, "Damn! But it was worth it! It better end like this."
He probably also figured since she was his penultimate victim and he knew it was gonna kill her anyways he may as well go ahead and let himself be ended.
After movie ended I thought that he actually became human when fulfilling his destiny, but died from drinking poisoned blood . I guess sunlight killed him, but I thought he would evaporate if that was the case.
That's true of the conventional vampire story, but I believe Robert Eggers wanted to really get that shot that is "The Maiden and Death" which is a popular German and European motif.
Honestly, orlock’s death could have been a little cooler. In the 1922 version he crumbles into a burning pile of dust. That could have looked neat with modern special effects. But at least what we did get still works pretty well
This ending is way better. That final shot is beautiful and connects with the overall theme of sexuality in the movie. The perfect way to end the film.
I felt sad for Ellen and the Count. Mostly for Ellen because she never wanted melancholy and enough have died already. I believe that by succumbing to the Count and stalling him long enough to be exposed to the sun gave her the peace she longed for. She will definitely see Thomas again in Heaven and it shall take some time for the town to heal from this nightmare. Moral lesson to this movie is never accept any deals with Evil in the flesh and love is stronger than death.
I thought it was a metaphor. She called upon this evil younger, and it was infecting everything in her life. Not only did she have to come face to face with what she conjured up (obviously sexual frustration/sexual trauma) she had to become one with it in her most vulnerable/primal state ...sexually. They both died and everybody could continue on. We all probably have sexual traumas that circle back around one day....face it...become one with it...own it...before it destroys you and ones you love
Found it strange how he didn't cop that exposure to the sun was gonna kill him out the window? Like he obviously knew it was lethal to him but like was he that much in the moment or what lol
@@kevinmoore4355no, he didn't. What he wanted was to satisfy his sick lust and appetites for as long as possible. He was ready to leave, but Ellen told him to take more from her. He truly thought she was embracing him joyfully, not out of a desire to kill him. Part of evil like him, is the joy it feels corrupting others. He thought he had done that, and his hubris and Ellen kills him. It's the beauty, and beast.
The movie nearly copies Bram Stoker's Dracula scene for scene with minor differences but the changes still make it a worthwhile experience. Stoker sued and won for infringement. There is no romantic view of the elegant vampire here, Count Orlok is an undead corpse, quite graphic and I have to hand it to the young man playing the attorney who goes to his castle to finalize a property sale in England... Sound familiar? He truly shows you what paralyzing fear is like when facing a superior supernatural predator like Orlok.

A mustache ruined the whole movie for you really?
