Informative video, unfortunately a lot of detail is lost due to focussing issues.

This is the only video I have found that explains the difference in belts. Thank you. Do you know where I can find a belt for a Keystone Model SAZ-2?

So glad. You did this belt explainion video. I now own 7 vintage. A few i got already repaired but learning about the others. My vintage white sewing machine from 60s only had a month but belt is thrashed, still sewing though. But it has the orange lugged one. I think it is too plastic like but dont see any rubber ones that may work. That plastic material seems wrong for a belt.

Thanks for this well made video with relevant guidance. I just made a video too with a comparison of some of these belts. I got the impression, that lug belt were V-belts made of reinforced Polyurethane (PU), and they were not constructed to be belt with tooth as for a timing belt. But now I am not sure.

in very rare cases these are used as lugged belts in other equipment, I haven't seen these used as lugged belts for sewing machines

@@gmcxm211 After having tested them against normal V-belts, I do not think I will bye a lug belt again. They need significantly higher belt tension to make the same grip.

The thinner drive belts with teeth must be set quite tight. Too loose and the belt will start having cracks too soon. Push sideways in the center with a force equivalent to 1kg, belt should deflect about 15mm. The thicker plain belts can be more loose.

Your detailing of belts technically was very good. I just have a question. You said that both sides toothed belt can't be reversed as one side it works as the timing belt and the other side it works as "v" belt. I have "WHITE 999" model machine with two belt drive. One between motor and intermediate idler and the other between the idler and the flywheel. My belt on the motor has slackened and I am not able to adjust the length between motor and idler as they are mounted the same frame with no provision to adjust the distance. But if I reverse the belt it sits tight but I don't know if it will harm the belt. I would be happy to receive your advice. Thanks

try it to see if it works, these belts are cheap and are usually supplied with the 1 amp or less motors. the worst outcome is you'll have to get a different belt.

Thanks for your prompt response. Let me try and give feedback. Right now I have put a rubber band on the idler pulley and it works.

I'm sorry I can't be of much help. I'm not familiar with the interior motor driven sewing machines. I deal with mostly the big industrial sewing machines. If putting a rubber band around a pulley to take up the slack of the belt, it won't hurt the machine as long as the belt is not too tight. It seems strange that there is not an adjustment screw of some kind for the belt. But what you're describing sounds like an external motor using an idler gear as a speed reducer. Is the upper and lower shaft connected by a geared vertical shaft?

sorry it took me awhile to answer you but if you haven't purchased a belt yet, take your tape measure and wrap it on outside pullies just as it were a belt, this should get you in the ball park. most sewing machines use a 3/8 inch wide belt
