  • The RQ-4 Global Hawk is a high-altitude, long-endurance, remotely piloted aircraft with an integrated sensor suite that provides global all-weather, day or night intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capability. Northrop Grumman’s GLOBAL HAWK is one of, if not the world’s premier surveillance and reconnaissance unmanned aircraft system-and the Air Force’s go-to eye in the sky.
In the RQ-4 name, the "R" is the Department of Defense designation for Reconnaissance and "Q" means unmanned aircraft system. The "4" refers to the series of purpose-built remotely piloted aircraft systems.

The Global Hawk was designed by Ryan Aeronautical and the first five or so were built in their plant in San Diego. I know this because I watched them being put together right next to my workstation where I was building tail assemblies for the AH-64 Apache helicopter. Northrop Grumman acquired the Global Hawk when they purchased Ryan in the early 2000s.

The Newer Lockheed Martin RQ-170 Sentinel Stealth drone that was deployed in 2007 operated by the USAF and CIA is probably my favorite UAV for reconnaissance. Although it’s endurance is low at a flight time of 6 hours with a top altitude of 50,000 feet is a great carrier launched UAV. The Upgrade to the Global HAWK, the MQ-20 Predator, developed from the reaper and launched in 2009 with a cruise speed of between 402 MPH and 460 MPH at 50,000 feet for 19 hours with an internal weapons grade with 3.5 tons of bombs and 6 external hard points with a total carrying capacity of 6.5 tons. But I am probably most excited for the X-47B Pegasus Demonstration unmanned combat Aerial vehicle but, the Lockheed Martin Loyal wingman is probably the coolest most SciFi UAV I’ve ever seen

Wire up the servos and deliver Howitzers and the ammo anywhere. A self destruct means; like I'm pretty sure exists on the Global Hawks; So no one gets the mother boards or whatever should work to eliminate copy threat. Global Hawk is supposedly not survivable in, or near, an air space defended by a modern near peer adversary with an advanced SAM systems, but USAF somehow manages to fly the U-2 Dragon lady, an aircraft that was shown to be incapable of executing missions near an advanced enemy's territory, more than 60 years ago... WTF.... Why is Global Hawk suddenly obsolete?
But anyway, since USAF apparently decided to retire and replace the Global Hawk, I expect them to be replaced by the shadowy RQ-180 in larger numbers, or some completely new air frame that's so freaking stealthy it can hover above the Red square not being detected while reading the paper held by Vlad himself.

Both platforms require total air dominance in order to used in hostile areas. The Global Hawk's ability to loiter for over 24 hrs. is great, but it's ISR capabilities aren't that great. If they're using the same old Raytheon Electro-Optical camera, then it's imagery leaves a lot to be desired. It's SIGINT ability is very limited. Someone compared it to a Bearcat. An upgraded alternative is definitely needed. The U-2's loitering limit is about 12 hrs., Due to pilot fatigue. It's ISR ability is far superior to the Global Hawk. Both complement one another. Use of such platforms means satellites don't have to be repositioned. IMHO, I don't think the future UAVs will have anywhere near the payload capability of the U-2 and, consequently, will not provide better Intel.
