Phillip Sear plays a barcarolle from a set of 12 'musical sketches' by the French composer, conductor and pianist Anton (or Antoine, or Antony) Simon (1850-1916)

Born in Paris, Simon studied at the Conservatoire de Paris under the guidance of Antoine François Marmontel for piano and Jules Duprato for composition. At the age of 21,he moved to Moscow, where he permanently settled, taking up the role of Kapellmeister for the Théâtre des Bouffes and teaching piano at the Philharmonic Society of Moscow. In 1897, he was appointed as the inspector of orchestras for the imperial theatres.
Simon’s contributions to music were significant, especially in the realm of wind instruments, for which he composed works such as the quartet-like sonata Op.23 and 22 small pieces for ensemble, Op.26. His output also included three operas, a Piano Concerto in A major, Op.19, a Clarinet Concerto, Op.31, and a Fantaisie concertante for cello and orchestra, Op.42, among others. He was also involved in orchestrations for the ballet 'Don Quixote' by Ludwig Minkus and composed his own ballets, including 'La fille de Gudule'.
Simon’s collaboration with the talented choreographer Alexander Alexeyevich Gorsky was particularly noteworthy. They worked together on Gorsky’s version of Don Quixote and on '' La fille de Gudule', inspired by Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.
