This man is seriously helping me plan my career as a sophomore in highschool. With my increasing intrest in the air force this channel is perfect. The air force academy sounds like a pretty good option after highschool to assist me a nice college experience and finding the right job for me.
You will want high grades, volunteer, and some kind of school sponsored sport on your application. it will make you standout from others that are also applying.
Just received my appointment to USAFA’s class of 2027!! Super excited to get to experience everything the Academy has to offer. Your channel has been critical throughout my application process, thank you so much!
Old school Army public affairs guy here just wanting to let you know this video is fantastic and I look forward to seeing more of your work. If I was a high school student looking for my next step, this video would definitely have me thinking seriously about the Air Force Academy. Great work!
Ahh man, you're like the Military version of Swayne Martin. I've been watching Swayne since 2018 and you're just as helpful and entertaining to watch. I'm currently a high school sophomore and I'm currently raising my GPA, joining a few community service organizations, and getting back into the Civil Air Patrol squadron. Watching you guys has been very helpful, as I am trying to enroll into the Air Force Academy myself, watching your videos just encourages me to push and work harder.
I missed my opportunity to go to the academy when I got out of high school in 2008. I was a cadet in the Civil Air Patrol at the time too. I didn't care about much at 18. Went to an aviation college a few years after high school and became a commercial pilot. So the goal was reached but sitting here at 30 I really wish I went to the academy and join the USAF. Rejoined CAP as a senior member and giving back by taking cadets up on orientation flights and poking them to go to a military academy if they were thinking about it. Came full circle
I’m about to start my freshman year in high school I’ve lived by the academy my entire life and have always wanted to go, I play lacrosse also and hope to play there.
I’m a sophomore in high school and I have been fascinated with becoming a pilot for many years now. Joining the Air Force academy popped into my head after a year of AJROTC. I can’t wait to be able to get the chance to attend. I’ll definitely be attached and i retested in your channel for years to come.
Please consider joining civil air patrol, it is the usaf auxiliary. You can get your pilot license through it. Also if you get a certain rank you automatically get into the Air Force Academy. They do search and rescue mission. You get free orientation flights. And if you want to get your pilots license it is really cheap. If you have any questions ask me.
@@stt577 yes you can. If you get cadet colonel civil Air patrol, which is the highest rank, it is hard to get. But anyone can do it. It takes about three and a half years at least to get that rank. But if you do the national commander of civil Air patrol. Gets to nominate one person to automatically get into an academy. But you could have a good chance to get that because not many people get that rank. But also just joining if you get lieutenant or higher it really looks good on the resume if you are applying for an academy. I have a friend that joined the naval academy. And he will now be a flight deck Commander soon. And all he was was an officer in civil war patrol. I know a couple of other people because of civil war patrol have gotten into academies also. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck

Currently in high school and I’ve always had dreams to be in the Air Force and fly fighter jets. Thank you so much for helping me learn about the academy from an inside perspective.
I am currently working on my application for USAFA and it's been pretty stressful trying to get all my essays done, but this gave me a boost of confidence and made me want to continue with the process.
One of the alumni of the academy, Gregg Popovich, went on to be a basketball coach at a NBA team. It's cool to think how you can go one from the air force to better fields.
I'm an Aussie high schooler and I am planning to join The Australian Defence Force Academy to become a pilot. It's really interesting seeing the similarities and differences between the academies in each country. Best of luck to all those who wish to pursue a career like this!
I'm in ROTC and I heard from a few cadets who know of people in the academy that its rough af. Imagine 7 days a week of military from ages 17-21 + 10 minimum for a pilot contract. I know if they get caught drinking, they'll be consequences, and im not sure but I heard you're not allowed to leave the base without a buddy and letting your superior know beforehand. it's a huge commitment. ROTC is only 1 day a week and if you apply the same work ethic, your chances of being a pilot may be similar. At the end of the day its about whats best for you. This video is great. If you guys are in high school and have questions about AFROTC, let me know. Advice for anyone starting this year, study warrior knowledge... seriously.
hey man, thanks for the tips. Would you say that only applying yourself once a week as opposed to all 7 really gives you a better chance at getting a pilot slot? I know AFA graduates get the jack of all trades when it comes to pilot slots but I'm not too sure that your chances may be as even if you're just going through ROTC. Correct me if I'm wrong, however.
Of course, as mentioned in this video the amount of pilot slots given to AFA graduates is steadily decreasing, so maybe that could give better opportunities for others in ROTC?
Benjamin Monessa Im also AFROTC. I agree with you for the most part but people should also know that different ROTC detachments run things differently. I have ROTC 3 days a week. PT twice, LLAB, and AS class. And in regards to pilot slot, yeah the AFA gets more slots annually, but that doesnt mean they produce “better” pilots. If you study hard, get a good gpa, good pilot test scores, good PFA score, and good commanders ranking, you more likely or not will get a pilot slot.
Gluogie The AF hands out a certain amount of slots to the academy and certain amount of slots to ROTC. The pilot selects from the academy are no different than the pilots selects coming out of ROTC. If you apply yourself in school, get good grades, and stay in shape you’ll be good. Set yourself apart from the others. Also note that each ROTC Detachment runs things differently. I have ROTC 3 days a week for example compared to his one.
@Addison Brakensiek Okay, so first off jrotc is similar but not the same as AFROTC. Jrotc is just for high school students while AFROTC is for college students. AFROTC is a direct commissioning source for officers just like the Air Force Academy. JROTC is NOT. You however can do jrotc to get ahead of the learning curve and then do ROTC when you get to college. In regards to choosing a school, if you really want to do AFROTC, make sure that the schools you apply to have the program or that they are part of the cross-town programs for others schools that host AFROTC programs. In regards to your pilot question, nothing will guarantee you a future fighter pilot slot. It's good that you have that as your goal though because now you know what you want to work towards. Pilot slots are handed out based on a lot of different factors (commanders ranking, PCSM , Field training rank, GPA, PFA score...). So your best bet to get a pilot slot would be to focus on learning everything you will be taught once you get to ROTC, focus on school and keeping your grades up, and being physically fit. Don't try to over do it right now as you are a freshman in high school im assuming. You have a long way to go. I would def start with looking into a JROTC program if you want. I never did it but I know others who have.
What I remember from the courses I can write on a couple of yellow stickies. What I took away from my USAFA experience to deal with any situation without becoming overwhelmed and stressed. You WILL learn to manage your time and prioritize what is important. The majority of people you will interact with cannot operate on the same level.

Extra piece of information to back up what Sam said is that this years graduating class (c/o 2021) is receiving about 47% of the total pilot slots available across the commissioning sources.
I am a sophomore in high school and my dream is to become a pilot. Throughout the past couple years, I've been exploring all of my options in all of the different branches, and have come to the conclusion that I want to either be a Combat Aviator for the Army or a Fighter Pilot for the Air Force. Now that I've narrowed down my options, I'm now taking into consideration what I want to do after I retire or "get out" of the military. Music is one of my passions, and I want to be a high school band director after retirement. My question is, does the Air Force Academy offer a degree in Music Education? (Sorry for the long comment)

Current enlisted here and debating if I should apply for the Academy. I"m really nervous but I think I want to do it. Thanks for everything you do wingman :)
Here's what I'll say...I had a stellar 29 year career (AFROTC, four AFSCs, commanded an Air Expeditionary Wing in the desert), and the ONLY thing I would do differently would be to have studied and worked harder in high school so that I would have been competitive for a USAFA appointment. If you're thinking about joining the AF as an officer, why not go "all in"? I spent 5 years as a USAFA ALO, working with candidates, and they were all very smart, hard working kids. Great education, great career...
My cousin went thru and graduated as an officer and became a B-52 pilot, then a U-2 Spy Plane Pilot. After leaving the AF he went to work for United flying large cargo jets from the mainland to Alaska. After that, he became a second officer for United on passenger jets and he loves it. He told me they know how to hit you but not kill you and it was very painful. Part of his AFA training I guess was to experience what you might go thru if captured.

I was active AF in nursing:) Now I have two kids that are about the graduate high school:) My son definitely wants to follow in his daddy’s footsteps of getting a pilot slot. This man is seriously helping me plan my career as a sophomore in highschool. With my increasing intrest in the air force this channel is perfect. The air force academy sounds like a pretty good option after highschool to assist me a nice college experience and finding the right job for me.

@@SamEckholm Thank you for this video Sam, very helpful. Watched it 6 times!
Best of luck!!
My dad was a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force and taught physics at the AFA back in the 80s.
Yoooo that's dope

I’m about to start my freshman year in high school I’ve lived by the academy my entire life and have always wanted to go, I play lacrosse also and hope to play there.
try and keep your grades up and stay fit and you’ll do fine:)
@@mobilecomedy2161 you can really get to the airforce academy at a certain rank? Tell me more about that
@@stt577 yes you can. Good luck

One of the alumni of the academy, Gregg Popovich, went on to be a basketball coach at a NBA team. It's cool to think how you can go one from the air force to better fields.
Your stuff is not only (SUPER) helpful, but hilarious and enjoyable! Thank you!
I'm an Aussie high schooler and I am planning to join The Australian Defence Force Academy to become a pilot. It's really interesting seeing the similarities and differences between the academies in each country. Best of luck to all those who wish to pursue a career like this!
How's it going? Did you manage to get in?
