- The Oregon Trail extends just over two thousand miles across America and was a popular way to travel from the east to the west between the 1840s and 1860s. In this video we explore the remnants of the trail from the Idaho/Wyoming border across Big Hill with stops in Montpelier at The National Oregon/California Trail Center, Soda Springs and through to Fort Hall Idaho.

never was into this when I was a youngster but now Im very interested in the history of the Oregon trail and all the ghost towns in Idaho.
Glad you're enjoying them now. Idaho has so much interesting history. It's crazy to me to think that once upon a time, it was the British who controlled Idaho.

Too much history is destroyed in this country, thanks for bringing some light to the subject. I will be looking at this myself.
I remember my grandfather took all of us grandkids from ghosts town to ghost town and some of the old calvary forts. The deep oil smells in the wood were interesting and ghost towns set up like museums where the coolest ones. The other ones that had caretakers didn't do much to keep them from falling into the ground.
Sounds like your grandfather was the best kind of history buff--one who shares history.

I've driven by it for years and wrongly assumed it was just a kitschy replica but I was wrong, it was worth the visit.
@@ZGHistory I thought these old forts were all built of timber but I see the old drawing in your video also shows it built of something like plaster. The California missions from the 1700's are built like this, too. There must have been a sizable crew sent to do the original construction.
Soda Springs also has a pioneer cemetery. It's said a complete wagon was buried there. The fort shown in the video is located in Pocatello. The actual fort was much further north.
Very true. Which why I mentioned I was visiting a replica in the video. The actual fort site requires tribal approval to visit.
Actually southwest of the replica at Pocatello, not north.

No mention of Caldwell located just off the Trail at Canyon Hill?
This video covers the trail in Eastern Idaho. Caldwell is hundreds of miles from where this was filmed.

Great question. I'm not sure where the diary is housed today, it could well be in the archives of Oregon or another state, but my source was from the info board found at the top of Big Hill.

Well that's Northeast Oregon that's why they were headed through there to the Blue mountains
Lot of nonsense here. Ft Hall was located in the bank of the Snake river, a little upstream of where the Portneuf River flowed into the Snake . The true site is currently under the waters of the American Falls reservoir, probably 20 miles or more from the replica at Pocatello.
I'm not sure you watched the video as I do recall stating the original Fort Hall was north of the replica in what is now res land. If I remember my research correctly, the actual site of the fort is known and it is not under American Falls reservoir but access to the site is strictly controlled by the Shoshone.
In a lot of people are coming out that Oregon trail to see the seven temples...
They had to put the seven temples away in 1883..
