I always get a shiver hearing "...President Clark has signed a decree today declaring martial law ...", can't wait for the reaction to the next episode 🙂
We get to one of my favorite moments, where a friend of mine watched for the first time and was totally blown away by what happened. So great and so many years after B5 aired.
Shadow vessels are similar to Moya in the way that they both have a Pilot. Ah, season 3 of Babylon 5. My favourite season of one of my favourite TV shows of all time. The amount of information dropped, and the amount of things that happen is...amazing.
The Delenn making it rain scene is honestly one of the most touching of the show, and that despite many more great ones before (like the "in the place where no shadows fall" scene in Confessions and Lamentations) and after (...). It's such a simple and sweet gesture. And the trust between these two characters really shines through. So Sheridan seems to have very fond memories of his childhood, and especially his dad. So did Garibaldi with his Bagna Cauda... a pattern? The ending is a gut puncher. The heroes won, but it didn't solve it all. We have a great word for that in German: "verschlimmbessern", combined from "verbessern (improve)" and "verschlechtern (worsen)". It means to make something worse in the attempt to try to make it better. Really looking forward to the next ones! They might end up two-parters too...
Seems a recurring narrative bias, having characters' relationship with their fathers as an influence. Garibaldi's bereft fondness for his, Frankin's disagreements with his, G'kar and Ivanova losing theirs in front of their eyes, and Londo sadly remembering the day his father's shoes were too tight...
More political developments in this episode. Clarke working with both the Shadows and Psi-Corps, Night Watch positioning itself behind the scenes for a takeover, Shadow ships being used for research and development against pretty much everyone. Big things on the move. Another great episode.
Ivanova is so serious and Claudia Christian is such a giggler! It's funny watching her be so serious, often in the background she is more smiley and looks like she's on the verge of cracking up.. :) This series ramps up so nicely, it's great...
Your open, visceral reactions help me relive my own experiences watching this greatest of all series when it first aired. Thank you for sharing with us.
That people ar trapped inside Shadow vessels - ouch! The scream we hear when they appear make a lot more sense now, doesn't it? You are in for a hell of a ride the rest of this season.
The Shadow ships using living beings as the pilot/CPU - remember that piece of info, it'll be important later! The next two episodes are even more immense and the three are often viewed together as a trilogy. And fear not, we get to see plenty of Delenn's "military leader" side, and quite soon too :)
She remembered where the Psy Corps base on Mars was that Garibaldi mentioned in passing to Talia in one episode lol, she'll definitely remember everything important.
As I said when this was originally broadcast, "Sheridan is going to be in so much trouble with the E.P.A. for polluting Jupiter." I wonder if the Vorlons preserved Walter Peck, of the E.P.A., for that sort of task. ;-)
Shepard: "I'm surprised you included littering in that rap sheet." Jack: "That's what I call it when I redecorated the moon with that space station I was talking about. They thought otherwise."
@@BogeyTheBear Ah. Well having never played that game, I could only equate it to Jack O'Neill and John Sheppard and to me, it seems like something that might've been said in an episode that I hadn't seen.
I've always thought the idea of mirroring the Ancient Ship designs after their builders was fantastically clever: Shadow Ships are spider-like, while the Vorlons are Humboldt squid-like and their vessels reference their original biological characteristics of their designers.
"And now, more than anything else in the world, I wish it would rain... just for a little while." Any time I have a yearning for something, this line plays in my head.
This episode, more than any Disney movie or Rom Com I had or have ever watched, defines what a relationship should be to me. Delenn, making it rain, and Marcus, going out of his way to distract Susan and make her laugh, are perfect expressions of love. It's one of my favorites of the whole series.
Yes, Marcus is a sweetheart. John really has balls and a keen tactical mind and that moment between him and Delenn onboard the White Star is beautiful. But yes, learning more about the Shadow ships is frightening. And then Martial Law! Dear, oh dear! Things are really heating up!
As B5 progresses through the third and fourth seasons, watching the characters interacting and how critical they are to what happens is one of the things I love so much about these seasons as well as the show overall. So glad you love this show like so many of us have for decades, @medusa cascade.
i love Marcus, his humor is great. he has some of the best jokes in this season and the next. i am really glad they added him. the shadows ship scream when they pass or are born is a great effect.
I can tell you that a sloped bed is indeed comfortable. Not THAT sloped, as it would break your neck lol... But I have raised the head of my bed around 6 extra inches and it's amazing.
Everything out there has only one purpose-To distract us from ourselves, from what is truly important. There are no distractions in here. You can learn much from silence.
This episode is B5 at it's best! It draws on various plot points from previous episodes, turns what you think you know on it's head & builds so well on the 'bigger picture' The Shadow vessels are for my money the most sinister, evil looking & well designed (both visually & audio too!) 'bad guy' ships in all of Sci-fi, & this episode highlighted that superbly and was a CGI tour-de-force for the time! I loved how JMS made the victory for Sheridan bitter-sweet: they destroyed the Shadow vessel, but by bringing the Whitestar into Earth space, they gave Clarke the perfect excuse to declare martial law & tighten his grip on power! You've got some great episodes coming!
I'm so excited for episode 10 coming up! It won a hugo award and... you're gonna LOVE IT! It's the peak of Delenn's badassness (yes, that is now a word!) and ooohhhh, it gets SO many balls rolling! I think you could make that episode a 3 or 4-part reaction, tbh, given how much it covers!
And here is where we start to see the brilliance of JMS For the next 30+ episodes, characters that you are invested in will laugh, love, fight, change, and more. For my money, the best written and preformed 2 seasons of any sci-fi series anywhere. It only gets better! Love your reactions.
Delenn is religious caste. To reach her particular station, as (now former) member of the Gray Council, you have to assume she had a fanaticism about her within her caste. She is a true believer, in every sense of the word. I certainly wouldn't want her as an enemy.
THIS is where things start getting REALLY interesting! I've probably said that a few times before already. But? Earth is now a Martial Law state? Yeah, things are DEFINITELY getting interesting!
John's disappearance would need to be explained to Earth, "that would not explain Delenn" really isn't an issue for John to address. Undoubtedly, Delenn could leave some explanation the Rangers could orchestrate for her disappearance. I mean, she's not part of the Grey Council anymore, "merely" a member of the Religious Caste, Ambassador to Babylon 5, and happens to be in charge of the Rangers second only to their leader on Minbar. If they delivered a message to their leader, "Delenn has fallen and we need to cover her disappearance." It would be done pretty cleanly. The concerns were connecting John and Babylon 5 to the action at Ganamede. Sheridan: "Give me everything you've got." Lanier: "If I were holding anything back I would tell you." Me: "The (un)intentional sass is strong with this one." Marcus: "Did it make you laugh?" Susan: "Yes" Marcus: "Then my job here is done." Me: [aww.....]
Enjoy the roller coaster ride. These next few episodes are a thrill-a-minute and include the winner of the 1997 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation
So I wonder what the Minbari call their version of Alexa, eh?! Yes, the Jupiter tactic is cool I recall from the forums of the day that the Shadow ship doesn't blow up hydrogen because there's no oxygen there but they say "ignite" - I think if you put enough energy into it it still has a reaction basically but it's not the bang you'd get on Earth. Cracking episode all round at lots of levels and a big ol' turning point. I imagine by now you've seen a fair few episodes on but it's going to be very entertaining watching you watch the next few and how prophetic you've been to this point!

The whole night watch thing ... thats how most tyrannical regimes worked in modern history does not matter what side od the political spectrum. The ships are like moya and pilot but with a hefty dose of malevolence thrown into the blending, with the shadows it'd be more of a parasitic then symbiotic joining of minds. Does raise some questions about the vorlon ship system as they're also organic and the two races are in some ways different sides of the same coin.
Cant remember if they explain the minbari beds in the show (outside of a sentence or two)... But ancient (really ancient) Minbari used to have a biological issue with sleeping horizontally since doing so could cause them to die suddenly in their sleep so even though they dont suffer that problem any more physically (although i think some can still run into the problem) they still find the idea of sleeping horizontally 'tempting fate' or some such. Personally sleeping on something of that incline makes me wince.
With what Earth did with that ship, I really wonder how far the control of the Shadows reaches. I mean, they surely wanted their ship back, not have Earth fool around with it.
Great Reactions to a very good story. I think I should tell you the truth about one of your false eyelashes. I saw them one day and borrowed them, but not to use on my own lashes. I stuck them on like a David Niven Moustache. Unfortunately one of them fell off when I was just about to take a drink of my pint and it fell in. I tried to wash it but not good enough. Well I don't know how to wash false eyelashes.
I am so glad you like Marcus. I also watch Already Cancelled and in their reviews of B5 they HATE Marcus. Personally he is one of my favorite characters.
Ya I watch that channel too and just don't understand their hate for Marcus. I love Marcus' character. They also refer to him as Cole instead of Marcus, like he is some Earth Force officer 🤦♂️
@@brandonreed09 They find his crush on Ivanova to be creepy. Which is fine, it is their personal opinion, but it seems to me they let it affect their opinions of any plot he is part of as well. Kind of makes me wonder if Tara never met a romantic person in her life. She clearly considers him a stalker.
Enjoy the ride. From this episode forward the greatest sci-fi story goes full steam ahead right through S4. I suspect you will be doing many, many 2 parters.
You realize the perfect excuse for the absence of Sheridan and Delen for 4 days could have been that they were off having an affair somewhere together.
An Earth military officer in a prominent position having a romantic relationship with an alien (a Minbari at that!) would definitely be an Alliance wide scandal. He'd be fired within a day! 🙂
@@tyranusfan but no one will suspect that he was actually on iO destroying a earth Force military base! Besides the two of them have been seen having romantic dinner together! His job is to further inter species relations isn't it?
sometimes in flight sim, I just leave it with the volume turned up just to hear the rain falling and rolling thunder. Every time, I think about that scene in B5. I have left it on to fall asleep to.. ruclips.net/video/c44CSpGpiqo/видео.html
so you know they are planning to do babylon5 again by the same writer he has all set up if its yust half as good as this then whe got a bright future ahead
JMS being at the helm is a good sign, he will deliver quality. I'm just curious how he'll handle it as he obviously will not bring back the same characters with different actors, so what does a reboot mean. He compared it to Battlestar Gallactica reboot. Anyway, really excited about it and he indicated we may already see a pilot in the fall this year!
I'm not giving away any spoilers here, but you haven't seen Londo and Vir in this particular episode, right? They feature prominently in the next episode, which is Point of No Return.
He is a story teller, as he said himself he is not the person he was when he first wrote it so what he writes now will be different. He has things he didn't explore or has new ways to explore or new reflections of history he wants to explore. I really cannot see him taking on this whole world of pain being a showrunner again unless he had something he really wanted to make. He is not sort of other opportunities to make money.
He was approached to re-make B5 by one of the big streaming companies. They want product and the internetz has ruled that B5 was cheap, so... they want to spend much more to make it not cheap. JMS lives in the US, and is ageing, so he needs a great deal of money. I hope he gets to move to Canada during the making of this series, along with all those he loves.
@@stevetheduck1425 Very probable. The CW has basically established a small colony of American actors, writers and directors living in basic human dignity exile north of the border at this point. Most of them half JMS' age.

Personally he is one of my favorite characters.
wha?.. who the hell would hate Marcus?
Ya I watch that channel too and just don't understand their hate for Marcus. I love Marcus' character. They also refer to him as Cole instead of Marcus, like he is some Earth Force officer 🤦♂️
@@brandonreed09 They find his crush on Ivanova to be creepy. Which is fine, it is their personal opinion, but it seems to me they let it affect their opinions of any plot he is part of as well. Kind of makes me wonder if Tara never met a romantic person in her life. She clearly considers him a stalker.
Everytime I watch Babylon 5 I always see the Lord of the Rings. Clearly the Shadowships are Nazgul.
I love your reactions to this show, they are amazing!
Welcome to 2022...
Enjoy the ride. From this episode forward the greatest sci-fi story goes full steam ahead right through S4. I suspect you will be doing many, many 2 parters.
So, it begins....
That NightWatch speech...relevant.
- always, constantly, permanently relevant to the times we live in, and the times to come.
I am binge watching all your B5 reaction. Love you
sometimes in flight sim, I just leave it with the volume turned up just to hear the rain falling and rolling thunder. Every time, I think about that scene in B5. I have left it on to fall asleep to.. ruclips.net/video/c44CSpGpiqo/видео.html
Nightwatch are just trouble, obviously they haven't learnt much from past history.
That's the problem: For some, history is a lesson of warning signs. For others, history is just a practice run.
And so... It begins.
I can't wait for the rest of season 3.
Someone has a crush on Marcus 😘😘😘
And it Ain't Ivanova either....🧖💘🧔❣️
@@nolimit7959 😂😂😂 definitely not Ivanova
Such a power couple Delenn and John
Less a pilot, more a CPU.
Marcus is the GOAT
Like yourself I loved this show . Later in this series you have a 2 parter coming up and I know your going to love it ,🥰 enjoy
is nightwatch here now
The greatest love story of all time is Delenn & Jon Sheridan's!
Not pilots, operating systems.
Delenn is terrifying? You have NO idea
so you know they are planning to do babylon5 again by the same writer he has all set up if its yust half as good as this then whe got a bright future ahead
Just to be "that guy" this episode is called Point of no return, not Messages from earth part 2 . 😂
Point of No Return is the next episode after this one.
@@BogeyTheBear Severed Dreams is the next I'm looking at the the episode list, it's messages from earth , point of no return and Severed Dreams.
I'm not giving away any spoilers here, but you haven't seen Londo and Vir in this particular episode, right? They feature prominently in the next episode, which is Point of No Return.
i thought delenn was the coolest,i named my daughter after her,my sons called garak, wonder where that came from?
Life imitating art I fear these days...
If you like the neighbourhood you should watch the ecpanse some time in the future .
The Expanse is up there among my favourites.
@@BabylonLurker Yes, similarities to the whole Mars situation are quite interesting
Babylon 5 is great the way it is already. JMS wants to re-boot it, WHY?....Anybody??
Money
He is a story teller, as he said himself he is not the person he was when he first wrote it so what he writes now will be different. He has things he didn't explore or has new ways to explore or new reflections of history he wants to explore. I really cannot see him taking on this whole world of pain being a showrunner again unless he had something he really wanted to make. He is not sort of other opportunities to make money.
tbo Im hoping its going to be Crusade done right
He was approached to re-make B5 by one of the big streaming companies.
Argh, so much to say but it's all spoilery! You'll just have to ask me again in about 30 episode's time... :D
so are are not asking for much out of a partner ;) lol
