Tourney derailleurs work just fine. Nothing will flex as long as the cables are good, it is kept clean and lubed and it is properly adjusted. Basic maintenance is all that's needed and it works perfectly for years and years. Mine does anyways. Tip: Never store your bike with the chain on the larger rings/gears. This will stetch out the derailleur sping and keep it under tension, which will weaken the spring by time. Store or park the bike with the chain on the smaller rings/gears, this will put your derailleur in a 'relaxed' position. Happy biking everyone!
I’ve had this exact same bike now for 7 months and have put 180 trail miles on it and I love it so far! It’s held up great to some pretty rocky trails around Austin, TX with no issues. I’d highly recommend.
I love how my 2021 Talon 3 is still a looker in 2024. I upgraded pretty much 95% of it costing me around 1700 dollars including the original price of the bike. The bike feels amazing on trails, I am glad to have purchased this 2 years ago.
I bought a Talon like 6 months ago. Then I decided to get a FS bike and ordered a Giant Trance Advanced 3 1/2 months ago and still haven't gotten it, I've been using my Talon and i gotta say that these things can really handle a beating, i've been mashing this thing hard, my friends laugh at the torcher i do to it, anyway my point is that its a great bike.
Looking to get my first new mountain bike this year. Been riding an old bike for years. This video was really helpful. I think the Talon 4 will be great for my general needs. Really appreciate your explanation of the components! Thanks!
This one is one of the best basic mtb if you care about brand but doesn’t care much about the specs. If you’re into leisure riding and doesn’t care about having the better group set, better frame, better brake, etc. this is one of the best option.
I have a 2021 Stance 1 and Talon 2 both 29er. These giant bikes are awesome. I also just purchased a talon 4 27.5 as an extra bike for when I have company that don’t have a bike to ride. Keep up with the great videos . Good info!

That's a tough one. The only real difference between the talon 4 and the marlin 5 is that the marlin has the hydraulic brakes on it for a $70 price increase. I do prefer hydraulic brakes but then again the Talon 2 is only $620 and comes with a 1x drivetrain. Both are solid bikes though and I don't think you will be disappointed with either one
@@MossieRidesBikes Thank for the help! I probably go with the Giant Talon 4, but the Talon 2 sounds like a great option too! I think I prefer the geometry of the Talon compared to the Marlin but I wanted to make sure I’m getting a good bike with whatever one I chose. 👍👍👍
Just bought it the 2021 Talon 4 earlier (California time) but didn't able to take this home due to my truck cover was on. So excited to pick it up tomorrow. It costs me around $596 tax included. Been to different shop but they don't have stock, got lucky on my last shop that I went to, they have the Small size with 29 inch wheels. I'm a beginner and just riding casually. Thanks for your video, it lessens my anxiety right now.
Here in Germany it is the Talon 3 if I remember correctly. Gonna get one, as I like the colour. Hate that they only offer this colour with this tier... But hey, I'mma upgrade the hell out of it, as I am an apprentice in a bike shop that won't even break the bank. Couple hundred euros on top and it should make a pretty nice beater bike!
Great review, I bought one of these today and can’t wait for it to arrive, although I won’t be using it off road, I’m sure it will be great for my rides to work
yes, Giant bikes are little "less" $ and they are OEM manufactural but they cut the corners compare to Trek, Specialized and host of other brands. for example, recently I went from 2019 Marlin 6 to 2021 Talon 2 which is a compatible range in entry level XC. Marlin had thru axle with seal bearing hub verses loose bearing with skewer in Talon. all other components are similar/same as the Marlin. I bought a Giant just to try the brand but this will be last time I will buy one after I had to add a spacer in the freehub after finding the cassette wobbling on a brand new bike. I think this is a manufacture defect as many Talon 2 owners with Advent 1x9 reporting bent cassette after short time usage. good thing I caught the problem before I even started riding.
I don’t know if it’s just me but I’m totally hooked on the giant brand? Maybe it’s because my first and favorite bike I got was a roam 2. Now I’m thinking of going out and buying a talon 1 or a stance or both? Love the channel
Had a 2020 Fathom and a 2021 Talon 1. Wheels were always moving in the drop outs, the Fathom had the PF BB start to walk out of the frame! Bought a 2021 Trek (i know giant right!) Marlin 6 and the wheel is as true as my S-Works Epic even after 5 months, the wheel doesn't move in the drop out and I'm happy with it.
buy a solid platform and upgrade. Reason is you can ride while you upgrade, or have nothing while you save up for a larger price tag bike. On this bike, first thing Id change is the drivetrain like he said
@@nikstahley2333 great thanks for the info! Do you recommend any drivetrains? Also what’s better the 1x or the 2x drivetrain I just recently bought this bike
@@Flipping_myFinds I agree 1x is better, less weight and simplicity/less to adjust. A solid 1x10 or 1x12 drivetrain is what you really want. Easy way to choose upgrades is look at bikes in the higher price range and look at their components. The Eagle NX 1x12 setup seems to be a decent value, and is what I have on my GT Zaskar elite. A dropper post should also be high on your mod list; I underestimated how much I would use it
As always, great vid. Giant mediums have always fit me the best! I got the 2021 Trance. Loving it! Will the derailleurs need altering too ? Thanks in advance.
Just bought this bike for my girlfriend I actually paid $600 but I live in a Democratic state she loves it though I think it’s perfect for someone who’s not going to be hitting any jumps or doing anything crazy but wants something legitimate vs getting a Walmart bike it’s honestly pretty nice for the price

Never had hydraulic brakes and they look a lot of maintenance with bleeding etc , is it worth me getting the talon 4 with mechanical disc as I only want it for soft trials and recreational riding or should I pay a bit more for hydraulic
for the majority, it is actually less maintenance for hydraulic. As long as you have a mineral oil brake you don't need to bleed them that often and when you replace brake pads you simply push the pistons back, pull the old pads out, and stick the new ones in. Mechanical brakes are all based on cable tension which stretches over time and needs to be re-adjusted. The rear wheel should be pretty center relative to the seat tube. You can apply pressure to the saddle then loosen the quick release to make sure the wheel is in the dropouts all the way. Have fun on your new bike!!
They should have kept making the pre 2020 talon 3 bikes. It was better than this talon 4. Shimano derailleurs over micro. And hydraulic disc brakes over mechanical with the same MSRP as the 4.
